The headline most likely refers to Lake Vostok, a vast body of liquid water buried beneath East Antarctica. No one has looked directly across its open water: the lake lies under roughly 3.7–4.2 kilometres of ice. Scientists have mapped it indirectly, however, and recovered ice formed from lake water. So “no one has ever seen it” is true only if “seen” means a direct view of the lake itself.
What is the lake beneath Antarctica?
Lake Vostok is the largest and best-known Antarctic subglacial lake. A 2011 technical review by Martin J. Siegert, Sergey Popov and Michael Studinger describes it as more than 250 kilometres long, around 80 kilometres wide at one point, and more than 500 metres deep. The same review estimates that 3.7–4.2 kilometres of ice cover it. Those are approximate figures from that review, not a live survey. NASA Technical Reports Server: Lake Vostok technical review
It is one of many lakes hidden under Antarctic ice, not the only one. NASA Astrobiology reported in 2022 that more than 400 Antarctic subglacial lakes had been identified, while a study published that year cataloged over 700 worldwide. How do scientists know Lake Vostok is there?
Geophysical measurements map the hidden basin
Radar, seismic and gravity measurements reveal structures beneath the ice. The 2011 technical review describes two distinct basins at Vostok and evidence from ice that formed when lake water froze onto the base of the ice sheet. These measurements let researchers infer the lake’s shape and setting without seeing its open water.

Satellites detect changes above active lakes
Satellite altimeters measure the height of the ice surface, not the water beneath it. When an underground reservoir fills or drains, the ice above it rises or sinks slightly. Repeated measurements can reveal those changes. NASA’s 2021 account of a study using ICESat and ICESat-2 reported connected, active lake systems beneath West Antarctica and two additional active lakes detected by the approach. That finding describes the study reported then, not the total number of Antarctic lakes. NASA, 2021: Antarctic hidden lake networks
Satellite observations therefore help map activity associated with lakes; they do not photograph a lake through kilometres of ice. As glaciologist Helen Amanda Fricker of Scripps Institution of Oceanography told NASA in 2021, “These are processes that are going on under Antarctica that we wouldn’t have a clue about if we didn’t have satellite data.”

Why can liquid water exist under so much ice?
Deep beneath the ice sheet, geothermal heat from below and the insulating effect of the thick ice cover help keep water at the base of the ice sheet near the pressure-melting point. The conditions there differ from those at the frigid surface, so surface air temperatures do not determine whether the buried water stays liquid.
The 2011 review interprets the lake’s ice as melting at its northern end and freezing onto the ice sheet farther south, a process that could drive circulation. The exact circulation depends on hydrochemical properties that the review says were not yet known, so it should be treated as a scientific interpretation rather than a fully observed current map.

Has anyone drilled into Lake Vostok?
Drilling at Vostok recovered ice from the lake’s accretion zone—ice formed as lake water froze onto the underside of the ice sheet—but stopped short of the open water to avoid contaminating it, according to NASA’s 2022 feature. Accretion ice is evidence derived from lake water, not a direct sample or view of the open lake.

- Lake Vostok: Researchers recovered lake-derived accretion ice; the cited sources do not report a direct sample of its open water.
- Lake Whillans: Researchers obtained lake-water and sediment samples. NASA reports methane-metabolizing microbes in those samples.
- Lake Mercer: A hot-water drilling campaign passed through the ice above it; that is a separate lake and a separate investigation.
These distinctions matter because a result from Whillans or Mercer is not evidence collected from Vostok. NASA Astrobiology, 2022
Could anything live beneath the ice?
Microorganisms have been found in Vostok’s lake-derived accretion ice, and direct sampling at Lake Whillans has found microbes in a different subglacial environment. That makes microbial life beneath Antarctic ice a credible subject of study, but it does not establish that a thriving ecosystem in Lake Vostok’s open water has been demonstrated by direct sampling. The water itself has not been directly sampled in the evidence described here.

Why do subglacial lakes matter?
Some subglacial lakes are parts of connected water systems. Water moving beneath the ice can lubricate the base of an ice sheet and affect how the ice slides over bedrock; it can also travel toward the ocean as freshwater. NASA’s 2021 account describes satellite observations as a way to study these processes. They help researchers understand ice-sheet hydrology, but Lake Vostok’s existence alone does not establish a particular sea-level outcome or climate effect.
Studying how to detect and access water beneath thick ice also offers a terrestrial research analogy for missions to icy moons such as Europa and Enceladus. That connection is about methods and environments, not evidence of life beyond Earth. In NASA’s 2021 report, study lead Matthew Siegfried, then an assistant professor of geophysics at Colorado School of Mines, described the wider significance this way: “We’re really talking about a water system that is connected to the whole Earth system.”
