theme.json is the canonical configuration file for a WordPress block theme. Stored in the theme’s root directory, it defines which design controls appear in the editor, registers presets such as colors and font sizes, and applies global, element-level, and block-level styles. WordPress 6.6 introduced format version 3, which is the current format; older formats remain supported for themes with an earlier compatibility floor.
What theme.json controls
A block theme uses theme.json as the shared contract between WordPress core, the theme, and user customization. The file can define editor settings, design presets, global styles, block defaults, custom templates, and template parts. WordPress merges these declarations by origin, so a user’s settings or a block style variation can be more specific than the theme defaults.

A file placed in a subdirectory is not the theme-level theme.json that WordPress expects.
Settings and styles are different jobs
The most important distinction is scope of responsibility:

settingsdecides which controls and choices are available in the editor. It can register color palettes, font families, font sizes, spacing presets, layout widths, and block-specific controls.stylessupplies the visual values that WordPress applies. It can set the site-wide background, typography, spacing, element styles, and block defaults.
A palette in settings.color makes named colors selectable; it does not automatically make headings blue. A color value in styles is what applies a color to the root, an element, or a block.
Choose the format version and schema first
Version 3 is the current theme.json format and was introduced in WordPress 6.6. New capabilities are developed for the latest format, but older versions continue to work. Your choice should follow the oldest WordPress installation the theme promises to support, not simply the newest site used during development.

Set the $schema property to a version-specific schema URL matching that oldest supported release. The documented pattern is https://schemas.wp.org/wp/{{version}}/theme.json. In an editor with JSON Schema support, the matching schema supplies validation, autocomplete, and tooltips. A schema for a newer version can make an editor accept keys that an older WordPress installation ignores.
The WordPress Developer Resources reference for theme.json was last updated October 14, 2026. Check its availability information whenever you add a newer property.
A minimal modern file
This example shows the shape of a version-3 file without attempting to enable every design tool. The exact nested keys remain schema-defined, so validate the file against the schema for your support floor.

The settings object: expose capabilities and presets
The documented settings families are appearanceTools, border, color, custom, dimensions, layout, lightbox, position, shadow, spacing, typography, useRootPaddingAwareAlignments, and blocks. Enable only the controls and presets that belong to your design system; a crowded editor can be as problematic as a restricted one.
Color, gradients, and custom values
settings.color can expose a palette and gradient choices. It controls what users can select and can allow custom colors when that capability is enabled. WordPress uses registered presets to generate corresponding CSS custom properties and classes, which keeps editor choices consistent with front-end output.
Typography and font presets
settings.typography covers capabilities and presets for font families, font sizes, weight, line height, text decoration, text transform, and other options supported by the target version. Register only the families and sizes the theme actually designs around, then apply defaults in styles.typography.
Spacing and dimensions
Spacing settings cover margin, padding, and block gap. Dimensions settings expose controls such as minimum height where supported. A spacing preset makes a named value available; it does not add padding to every block until a matching style value is declared.

Layout
Layout settings define content and wide widths and the alignment behavior available to blocks. These values establish the relationship between a readable content column and full-width or wide designs.
Border, shadow, position, and lightbox
The corresponding settings families expose controls for borders, shadows, positioning, and image lightbox behavior where supported. Their nested keys must be checked against the schema for the WordPress version you support because availability changes over time.

Per-block settings
Place block-specific settings under settings.blocks when a capability should appear for one block rather than globally. This is useful for a constrained design system, but the exact nested keys are schema-defined and should be validated against the target version.
The styles object: apply values by scope
The styles object applies visual values to three practical scopes: the root site, semantic elements, and individual blocks. The reference covers color, border, dimensions, filter, shadow, spacing, typography, and CSS.

Root styles
Top-level style keys are emitted for the body and establish site-wide defaults. Root typography, colors, spacing, and layout values provide a baseline that blocks can inherit unless a more specific rule overrides them.
Element styles
Use styles.elements for semantic targets such as links, headings, buttons, and captions when the schema supports that element. This is preferable to scattering equivalent CSS because the values remain visible to the Site Editor and participate in the same origin-merging model.
Block styles
Use styles.blocks for defaults belonging to one block. WordPress normally emits a block node using a selector such as .wp-block-blockname-without-namespace, unless that block declares a custom selector. The scope changes the meaning of an otherwise identical key: a typography value at the root is a site default, while the same key inside a block node is a block override.
Why a style may appear not to work
More specific origins can merge with and outrank theme defaults. User styles, block style variations, and block-level declarations may therefore win over a root rule. When debugging, inspect the scope first, then check whether a user or variation value has higher precedence, and finally confirm that the property exists in the WordPress version running the site.

What appearanceTools does
settings.appearanceTools is a boolean bundle and defaults to false. Setting it to true can expose controls across background, border, link color, dimensions, sticky positioning, spacing, and line height. The bundle can grow as WordPress adds supported design tools.
When to enable it
A public theme aimed at broad user customization may enable the bundle so users can work without a long list of individual switches. It is a product decision, not a requirement for global styles.
When to avoid it
A client-specific or tightly controlled theme may prefer explicit settings so the editor shows only tested controls. WordPress warns that future releases can add unfamiliar controls to the bundle; a theme that enables it accepts that forward-compatibility risk.
Combining the bundle with individual settings
You can enable appearanceTools and then turn off individual controls when the theme needs a narrower interface. Conversely, leaving the bundle off lets you opt into specific border, spacing, typography, or positioning capabilities one at a time.
Root padding-aware alignments
settings.useRootPaddingAwareAlignments changes how root padding interacts with full-width blocks. When enabled, values in styles.spacing.padding apply to the contents of full-width blocks instead of only to the root block.
Declare the padding as an object with separate top, right, bottom, and left values. This explicit shape avoids ambiguity and lets WordPress calculate the content edge consistently across aligned blocks.
Property availability is version-dependent
Do not assume that a key documented today works on every installation. WordPress maintains an availability table showing when a theme.json style key became available and when a corresponding Style Editor control arrived. The current reference lists these examples:

The living version-3 reference is intended for WordPress 6.6 or later and the latest Gutenberg plugin. If your theme supports older WordPress releases, use the older schema and avoid newer keys, or create a tested fallback outside the unsupported property.

- Set the compatibility floor. Write down the oldest WordPress version the theme will support. This determines the schema URL and limits the properties you can safely use.
- Choose
versiondeliberately. Use version 3 when the floor is WordPress 6.6 or later; otherwise select the older format that matches the floor. - Configure editor capabilities. In
settings, register only the palettes, font sizes, font families, spacing presets, layout widths, and block controls that your design system supports. - Apply global defaults. Add root values in
stylesfor the site’s typography, colors, spacing, and other global decisions. - Add intentional exceptions. Use
styles.elementsfor semantic targets andstyles.blocksfor block-specific defaults instead of duplicating broad CSS. - Decide on
appearanceTools. Enable the bundle for broad flexibility, or keep it off and opt into individual controls when the interface must remain constrained. - Check every newer key. Compare each property with the availability table before shipping to a mixed-version audience.
- Validate and inspect. Use JSON Schema support in your editor, then open the block editor on the minimum supported WordPress version. Confirm that the intended controls appear and that the generated front-end CSS matches the expected scope.
Troubleshooting common failures
A control is missing from the editor
First verify that the relevant setting is enabled and nested under the correct family. If appearanceTools is false, controls supplied only by that bundle will not appear. Next check the WordPress version: a property can exist in current documentation while being unavailable on an older installation. Finally, confirm that the declaration is under settings.blocks only when the control is intended for a specific block.
A value is registered but not applied
Registration and application are separate. A palette, font size, or spacing preset in settings creates a choice; add the corresponding value in styles at the root, element, or block scope to apply it.
A block ignores the theme default
Inspect the generated selector and the block’s origin. A block style variation or user style can outrank the theme rule, and a block with a custom selector will not necessarily match the normal .wp-block-… pattern.
New keys validate but have no effect
Compare the key with the minimum runtime version, not just the schema used by your editor. A newer schema can permit a property that an older WordPress release does not implement. Remove it, supply a fallback, or raise the theme’s compatibility floor.
