The reported collapse in Yandex-network bot traffic does not show that Russian disinformation accounts went offline. The figures describe HTTP requests categorized as bot traffic, not a count of social-media accounts or influence operators. Yandex reported serious damage and service interruptions at several data centers, but the available evidence does not establish how much coordinated disinformation activity, if any, depended on the affected infrastructure.
What happened to Yandex’s data centers?
Yandex said its Sasovo data center was seriously damaged during the night of October 7–8, 2026, and was completely shut down. In an October 9 update, the company reported an attack on its Kaluga facility, where part of the infrastructure was out of service. Yandex said staff at both sites were unharmed and that it was difficult to estimate when restoration would be complete. The company later reported that its Vladimir data center was attacked overnight on October 11 and stopped operating; it said no staff were hurt there. Separately, Yandex Cloud’s status history recorded power-supply interruptions affecting the Russian installation’s ru-central1-b availability zone beginning October 7. An October 10 update still listed the zone as unavailable while engineers worked on the consequences. What do the reported bot-traffic figures measure?
Tom’s Hardware reported, citing Cloudflare Radar, that HTTP requests categorized as bot traffic from the Yandex network fell to 0.4% of the maximum request count over the preceding two weeks. The report also described an earlier decline to around 57% on October 8. Both figures concern observed requests associated with a network and a bot-traffic category; neither is a count of Russian propaganda accounts. The comparison is therefore between network requests over a rolling two-week window and an earlier observed level—not between active and inactive influence-operation accounts. A request count can fall sharply without showing which software generated the missing requests, who operated it, or what it was intended to do.
Why “Yandex bot” does not mean “Russian propaganda bot”
Yandex’s Webmaster documentation calls YandexBot its main indexing robot and lists other specialized robots used for tasks such as image indexing, checking site availability, gathering advertising information, and processing content requested by users. In that context, “bot” means automated software making web requests; it does not automatically mean a deceptive social-media account or a coordinated influence operator. That makes crawler traffic a plausible major component of requests described as coming from Yandex’s network. It is an interpretation, not a measured breakdown: the sources cited here do not quantify how much of Cloudflare’s series came from each Yandex robot or from other automated activity. It would be just as unsupported to claim that all the measured traffic was search crawling as to claim that it represented propaganda accounts.

Yandex described data centers as “the iron heart of Yandex” and said, “For now, it is very difficult to say when the equipment at the data centers will be back up and running.” Those statements describe the company’s view of its infrastructure and its restoration uncertainty; they do not explain the composition of Cloudflare’s traffic measurements.
