The largest documented individual natural crystals highlighted here are gypsum crystals in Mexico’s Naica Cave of the Crystals: NASA reports examples up to 12 m long and 2 m in diameter. Other famous “giants” are different kinds of objects—a crystal-lined geode in Spain, a museum geode, and a polished quartz sphere—so they cannot be ranked on one scale.
Where are the biggest individual crystals?
Naica, in Chihuahua, Mexico, is the standout for individual natural crystal size. NASA describes free-growing gypsum crystals in the Cave of the Crystals reaching up to 12 m long and 2 m in diameter. The cave was discovered at a depth of about 300 m in 2000. A 2007 report in Nature gives a length of up to 11 m, so the 12 m figure is best understood as a reported maximum, not a size shared by every crystal. NASA’s Naica account and Nature’s report document the cave and its crystals.
These crystals are gypsum, also called selenite in its colourless crystalline form. Naica’s deep cave environment was near 60 °C; Nature notes that gypsum is most soluble in water at around 58 °C, a condition relevant to the crystals’ growth. Further detail on the proposed growth mechanism is beyond the size comparisons here.
Naica’s Cave of the Swords
Naica also has an earlier crystal cave: the Cave of the Swords, discovered in 1910. NASA reports sword-like selenite crystals there reaching up to 2 m long—enormous, though much shorter than the reported crystals in the Cave of the Crystals. NASA’s Naica page describes both caves.

How does the Pulpí Geode compare?
Spain’s Pulpí Geode is a large cavity lined with crystals, not one giant crystal. Its official site describes the geode as about 8 m long and 2 m high, with some gypsum crystals lining it nearly 2 m long. It was discovered in December 1999 by members of the Grupo Mineralogista de Madrid. The dimensions of the cavity and those of its individual crystals describe different things. The Pulpí Geode’s official information gives these measurements and describes a proposed mixed karstic-hydrothermal origin for the formation.

Museum specimens add two more ways to think about “largest”: a geode measured as a whole object, and a quartz crystal carved and polished into a sphere.

What does “largest crystal” mean?
A meaningful comparison needs to specify what is being measured. Naica’s figures describe the length and diameter of individual crystals. Pulpí’s 8 m by 2 m figures describe the geode cavity, while its nearly 2 m figure describes some crystals lining it. The museum examples are measured as a whole geode or as a polished sphere. Those categories do not produce a single, like-for-like world ranking.

Naica is described by NASA as a working lead-zinc mine, not a show mine; its account does not establish public access to the Cave of the Crystals. Do not assume that visitors can enter it. NASA’s page provides the mine context.
