The episode sequence is Faith, Smoke and Mirrors, A Crooked Mile, In Sheep’s Clothing and Cry Wolf. The structure is therefore closer to a television-style mystery season than to a sprawling role-playing game: each episode advances the investigation, introduces new information and asks you to decide how Bigby treats the people around him.
Telltale emphasizes dialogue choices and the timing of decisions. Genre and mood: which atmosphere fits you?
Choose the noir mystery for suspicion and investigation
The Wolf Among Us uses a detective framework. You move through a city where familiar fairy-tale identities have been reframed as residents with debts, grudges, secrets and political tensions. The result is urban fantasy with a hard-boiled tone: the murder investigation is the spine, while the setting supplies the strange suspects and moral ambiguity.
Its mature rating and violence are part of that presentation. If you enjoy interrogations, competing accounts and decisions that can make an investigation more confrontational or more diplomatic, Bigby’s case is the natural first choice. Do you need to read Fables before The Wolf Among Us?
No. The game is set before the first Fables issue, and Telltale describes it as “A perfect place to begin your Fables journey, even if you’ve not read the comics this game is set before the events seen in the first issue.” In practical terms, the game introduces the world and its rules as you encounter them.
Reading collected Fables editions can be an optional way to explore more of the setting afterward. It is not a prerequisite for understanding Bigby’s investigation, and the game should not be treated as requiring comic-book continuity knowledge.
Is the Definitive Series the whole Walking Dead story?

Start with The Wolf Among Us when atmosphere and focus matter more
- You want a murder investigation with a clear five-episode shape.
- You like noir, urban fantasy and fairy-tale characters reinterpreted for an adult audience.
- You want to test whether choice-driven adventure games suit you before taking on a multi-season collection.
- You have not read Fables and want a game that explains its own setting.

If you are completely undecided

As of October 13, 2026, Telltale announces The Wolf Among Us Remastered for digital release on October 29, 2026. The remaster includes all five episodes, enhanced visuals and presentation, an optional black-and-white Noir Mode and bonus behind-the-scenes material.

Physical retail editions are announced for Q1 2027, with further details still to come. That makes the physical edition a forthcoming option, not a currently confirmed listing with a verified price, stock status or product SKU. If you want to play before the remaster’s release date, the original edition is the available version referenced by the existing store page. If presentation upgrades and Noir Mode matter to you, wait for the digital remaster’s launch and verify platform availability at purchase.

The Definitive Series is the straightforward choice when you want the four-season run and its named side stories together. Its store page advertises 23 episodes and over 50 hours of gameplay. Regional store prices can change, and no comparable current US price is established here, so check the store in your region rather than relying on an old price quoted elsewhere.
If you already own individual seasons, check which episodes and side stories your platform account includes before buying a collection.
