The Wolf Among Us is Telltale Games’ five-episode mature noir adventure set in the world of Bill Willingham’s Fables. You play Bigby Wolf, the reformed Big Bad Wolf and sheriff of Fabletown, a secret New York community where fairy-tale refugees hide among ordinary humans. The game is a prequel to the original comics: Telltale places it 20 years before the comic storyline, and DC describes it as a canon prequel. A separate DC digital-first comic adapts and expands the game’s murder investigation; it is not the same publication as the monthly Fables series.
What The Wolf Among Us is
Telltale presents The Wolf Among Us as a hard-boiled detective thriller built from familiar fairy-tale figures. Characters who escaped their magical homelands now live in modern New York, concealed from ordinary people. Their hidden neighborhood is called Fabletown, and its residents refer to non-Fable humans as Mundies.
The central case begins with a brutal murder. Bigby Wolf, Fabletown’s sheriff, must identify the killer while dealing with a community whose residents have competing histories, grudges and secrets. The investigation gives the game its noir shape: interviews, confrontations, evidence and moral decisions matter as much as physical action.
Why Bigby is the right detective
Bigby is the former Big Bad Wolf from the classic stories, but he is no longer simply a monster in the woods. He has taken human form, accepted responsibility for protecting Fabletown and built a reputation that is still questioned by people who remember his past. That tension drives the character: every conversation can be read as an attempt to prove that the sheriff has changed, or as evidence that the old wolf is still close to the surface.

A hidden community in New York
DC’s background on Fables explains that the characters are refugees driven from their homelands by an enemy known as the Adversary. Those who can pass as human use ordinary identities; others rely on glamour charms. Fables who cannot safely blend into human society may be sent to the Farm, a protected settlement in upstate New York. These rules are important context for the game because a murder is not only a crime: it can expose the entire community.
Story structure and the five episodes
The game is divided into five chapters. Telltale says both the player’s choices and the timing of those choices can affect the story. A decision made quickly in a conversation can produce a different relationship or sequence from the same decision made after a delay, and later scenes can acknowledge earlier conduct. Because of that branching design, no single playthrough shows every possible reaction or outcome.

The table describes each chapter’s place in the arc rather than prescribing one canonical route. The game is designed to remember what you said, whom you trusted and how you handled pressure, so two players can reach the finale with different relationships and information.
Main characters
Bigby Wolf
Bigby is both protagonist and investigator. In human form he serves as sheriff, questioning suspects and enforcing Fabletown’s rules. He can also return to wolf-like forms, which gives the player a powerful but dangerous way to respond to threats. The character’s defining question is whether authority can coexist with a violent nature. Choosing intimidation may produce immediate results while damaging trust; choosing restraint can preserve cooperation but allow a suspect to escape control.

Snow White
Snow White is one of the most prominent figures in the Fabletown leadership circle and a key presence in Bigby’s professional life. Readers who know the original stories may expect a simple fairy-tale romance, but Fables treats Snow as a political and administrative figure with her own judgments about law, safety and the community’s future. DC’s 2014 discussion of the game-related comic places the story years before Bigby’s later marriage to Snow, so the game should not be read as a retelling of that later relationship.
Mister Toad and the Woodsman
Mister Toad and the Woodsman are recognizable storybook figures who help establish the grounded, sometimes uncomfortable tone of Fabletown. DC specifically names them in its announcement of the Fables: The Wolf Among Us digital-first series. Their presence shows how the setting turns childhood characters into adults negotiating housing, work, debt, status and the law.
The wider Fables ensemble
The parent comic includes a much larger population than the game’s central investigation. DC’s guide names Cinderella, Pinocchio, Rose Red and the Three Little Pigs among the broader cast. They are useful reference points for understanding the shared world, but the game concentrates on the sheriff’s case rather than attempting to introduce every major comic storyline at once.

How the game connects to the Fables comics
It is a prequel, not a retelling of the monthly series
Telltale’s official material places the game 20 years before the events of the comics. DC’s 2014 description likewise calls it a prequel set years before Bigby’s marriage to Snow White and before the Fables’ later conflict with the Adversary. This makes the game an earlier chapter in the same fictional history: Fabletown already exists, but many relationships, political developments and major conflicts familiar from the comics have not yet happened.

The prequel position also explains why the game can introduce its own murder mystery without contradicting the opening situation of the monthly comic. It fills an earlier period rather than replacing the comic’s established beginning. You can therefore play the game without knowing the comics, then read Fables to see how the community and its characters develop afterward.
What canon means here
DC’s 2022 Everything You Need to Know About Fables guide explicitly describes The Wolf Among Us as a prequel and says it is considered canon. That is DC’s official published characterization. It establishes the game’s place in the world, but it does not turn every branch created by player choice into a single, universally fixed sequence of events. The safest way to understand the relationship is that the game’s premise, characters and major investigation belong to the authorized Fables history, while individual playthrough details vary by design.

The digital-first series retells the murder investigation and explores characters first introduced in the game. It is an official comic adaptation, not the original monthly series under a new name. When someone says “the Wolf Among Us comic,” ask which of these two publications they mean.

Shared-world rules that matter to the story
Glamour and concealment
Most Fables need a way to appear human in public. Glamour charms allow nonhuman residents to maintain an ordinary appearance, but they are not merely cosmetic accessories. Access, cost and enforcement create social pressure inside Fabletown. A character’s visible form can reveal their status, their resources or whether they are breaking community rules.
The Farm
Fables who cannot pass as human are generally required to live at the Farm, away from New York’s Mundies. The arrangement protects secrecy but also creates a sharp political divide between residents who can move through the city and those confined outside it. The game uses this background to make seemingly personal disputes part of a larger debate about rights, responsibility and unequal treatment.
The Adversary’s shadow
The refugees’ displacement is not ancient trivia. Their flight from the Adversary explains why Fabletown is cautious, why community leaders fear exposure and why old alliances remain important. The game focuses on a local murder, yet every investigation takes place under the pressure of preserving a fragile sanctuary.

Do you need to read Fables before playing?
No. The game explains the essential premise through Bigby’s job, Fabletown’s rules and the investigation. New players can treat it as a self-contained season. You will understand why glamour matters, why the residents hide from Mundies and why Bigby’s reputation is complicated without having read a previous issue.

Reading the comics first changes the experience rather than unlocking required information. Familiarity with Bigby’s history, Snow’s later role and the refugee community can make certain references more meaningful, while playing first preserves the mystery and lets the game introduce the world on its own terms. Neither order is incorrect.
How choices affect the narrative
Telltale’s design is closer to a branching television drama than to a role-playing game with a single optimal build. The important variables are what you say, whom you protect, how aggressively you use Bigby’s powers and how quickly you commit to a response. The game tracks those decisions and uses them to alter later conversations, available information and the way other characters treat Bigby.
- Dialogue: Different answers can reveal or conceal information and change a character’s willingness to cooperate.
- Timing: Waiting, interrupting or responding immediately can lead to different exchanges even when the available words look similar.
- Use of force: Bigby’s wolf abilities can solve an immediate threat but may reinforce the fear that he has not changed.
- Relationships: Trust and resentment accumulate across episodes, so a decision that seems minor in the opening chapter can matter later.
- Replay value: Replaying an episode can expose alternate scenes, but no route should be treated as the only official version of every event.
What the announced remaster and sequel mean
On June 15, 2026, Telltale announced The Wolf Among Us Remastered for a holiday 2026 release window, with physical editions planned to follow later in that holiday season. Telltale also announced The Wolf Among Us 2 for 2027. These are announced plans, not confirmation that either product is already released or currently available in every region and format. Check Telltale’s latest release notice and local listings before relying on a date.

The first game remains the 20-years-before story described by Telltale, while the sequel is a separate future entry. A remaster is likewise a refreshed edition of the existing game, not a replacement for the original Fables comic continuity.
Common points of confusion
- “Is it the Fables comic?” No. It is a Telltale game based on that universe. The similarly titled DC comic is an adaptation of the game.
- “Does prequel mean every choice is fixed in the comics?” No. DC calls the game canon, but the interactive format deliberately creates route-specific details.
- “Is Bigby simply the villain from the fairy tale?” No. The game recasts him as a reformed sheriff whose past remains central to how others judge him.
- “Are all Fables allowed to live in New York?” No. Human-looking residents can blend in with Mundies, while others may need glamour or must live at the Farm.
- “Is the 2026 remaster already out?” The June 2026 announcement gave a holiday 2026 window and later physical editions; it should not be described as a released product without a current release confirmation.
The clearest way to place The Wolf Among Us is as an interactive, canon-designated prequel: Bigby investigates a murder in a hidden New York community two decades before the main Fables timeline, and the separate DC digital-first comic retells that game story for readers who want a fixed-page version.
