If combat feels interrupted or exploration feels crowded, start with six changes: enable Quick Sign Casting, test the new exploration and dynamic combat cameras, hide exploration HUD elements you do not need, switch the map to All when you need every marker, tune horse-control sensitivity, and learn Quick Disengage for retreats. These options change how information and inputs reach you; none is a universal best preset. The September 2026 Remastered release adds some of them, while others first appeared in the Next-Gen update, so the labels and menu paths on your platform may differ.

What to change first

The most useful settings depend on the problem you are trying to solve. Players who cast Signs repeatedly usually gain the most from Quick Sign Casting. Players who lose enemies at the edge of the screen should compare the exploration and dynamic combat cameras. If the world feels covered in interface elements, dynamic HUD hiding and a deliberate map filter provide a cleaner view. Roach’s sensitivity and Quick Disengage address control rather than visibility.

  • Faster Signs: Quick Sign Casting switches and casts Signs without opening the radial menu.
  • More peripheral vision: Remastered’s exploration camera increases field of view, and its dynamic combat camera is intended to improve visibility during fights.
  • Less exploration clutter: HUD Configuration can hide the minimap and quest objectives while you are exploring outside combat or Witcher Senses.
  • More or fewer map icons: the default map mode reduces clutter; All restores categories such as question marks and boat icons.
  • More manageable riding: Remastered adds a horse-control input-sensitivity slider.
  • Cleaner retreats: holding the dodge button unlocks your target, after which sprint lets you run away.

Make one change at a time, play for several minutes, and keep the setting only if it solves a real problem. The official feature descriptions explain what each option does, but they do not establish a performance test or a single ideal value for every player.

Make Sign use immediate with Quick Sign Casting

Quick Sign Casting is the clearest combat-input change for anyone who uses Aard, Igni, Yrden, Quen, or Axii often. With it enabled, you can switch and cast Signs without opening the radial menu. That removes a menu interruption from a spell you may want to use in the middle of a sword exchange.

The option is documented in CD PROJEKT RED’s Next-gen update list of changes, where it is presented as an alternative way to play rather than a mandatory replacement for the radial menu. Look for Quick Sign Casting in the gameplay or control options shown by your edition. The exact grouping and label can vary by platform and version.

When it helps

  • You already know which Sign you want and want the shortest possible route from a button press to the cast.
  • You fight groups where pausing to open the radial menu breaks your awareness of surrounding enemies.
  • You are comfortable learning the direct Sign-switch input displayed by your control scheme.

When to leave the radial menu in place

The radial menu remains useful when you want to choose among Signs, weapons, bombs, or other tools deliberately. If direct casting makes you select the wrong Sign or press unfamiliar buttons under pressure, disable Quick Sign Casting and keep the menu. The setting changes access speed, not the underlying strength or duration of a Sign.

Choose a camera that shows the fight and the path ahead

Camera distance is a preference with practical consequences: a wider view can reveal an attacker or obstacle sooner, while a closer view can make Geralt and immediate targets easier to read. Remastered and the earlier Next-Gen update provide several ways to compare these trade-offs.

Camera option Documented behavior Best reason to try it
Exploration camera (Remastered) Increased field of view while exploring You want more of the surrounding terrain visible during travel and searching
Dynamic combat camera (Remastered) Adapts during combat to increase visibility in fights You lose track of enemies when combat becomes crowded
Alternative camera (Next-Gen) A camera positioned closer to the character; distance can be adjusted for Exploration, Combat, and Horseback You prefer a closer third-person view and want separate distance choices by activity

The Remastered camera additions are described in CD PROJEKT RED’s September 28, 2026 Remastered notes. The closer alternative camera and its separate distance controls are documented in the Next-gen update notes. Depending on your installation, camera controls may be under Gameplay, or under separate Exploration, Combat, and Horseback entries.

A practical comparison method

  1. Load a familiar save in an open area and note whether you can see the path, nearby interactables, and Geralt’s position comfortably.
  2. Enter a fight with several opponents and watch whether the camera keeps enemies in view without forcing constant manual adjustment.
  3. Ride a short route and check whether the wider or closer perspective makes steering and obstacle avoidance easier.
  4. Keep the camera that improves your own awareness; do not treat a wider field of view as automatically superior if it makes targets harder for you to read.

Reduce exploration HUD clutter without losing every navigation aid

The Next-Gen HUD controls can hide the minimap and quest objectives dynamically when you are not in combat and are not using Witcher Senses. This gives you a cleaner view of the environment while preserving the interface during situations where you need it most.

How to hide the minimap or objectives

  1. Open Options.
  2. Choose Video.
  3. Open HUD Configuration.
  4. Use the separate exploration controls for hiding the minimap and hiding quest objectives.
  5. Exit the menu and walk through a familiar area to confirm that the behavior matches what you want.

This path is the one stated in the Next-Gen update notes. The Remastered interface can present the controls differently, so use the labels in your own menu if they have moved.

Choose the right level of information

Hide both elements if you navigate by landmarks, roads, and memory and want the world to occupy most of the screen. Hide only the objectives if you still want a small orientation aid, or leave both visible if you depend on constant route information. Dynamic hiding is not the same as deleting the map or quests: the relevant information remains available when the game state or your settings call for it.

Use map filters deliberately

The default map filter reduces visual noise by hiding some icon categories, including question marks and boat icons. The icons have not been removed from the game world. Selecting All restores those categories when you want a comprehensive look at points of interest.

Map mode What you see Use it when
Default filter A reduced set of map icons; question marks and boat icons are hidden You are following a quest or traveling and want a readable map
All Restored marker categories, including question marks and boat icons You are searching for unexplored locations, checking a region systematically, or planning a boat trip

Switching between the two modes is more useful than committing to one permanently. Keep the reduced view for ordinary travel, then choose All when an apparent blank area needs investigation. The behavior is described in the official Next-Gen notes.

Tune Roach with the horse-control sensitivity slider

Remastered adds horse-control input sensitivity under Settings → Controls. Adjust it when Roach feels too responsive, making small corrections difficult, or not responsive enough, making turns and direction changes feel delayed.

There is no official best number and no sourced universal starting value. Move the slider a small amount, ride the same short route, and compare steering around gates, rocks, and narrow roads. Keep the value that lets you make both a gentle correction and a deliberate turn without fighting the controls. Because this is an input preference rather than a graphics setting, a value that feels good on one controller or input device may not feel identical on another.

Use Quick Disengage when a retreat is the goal

Remastered documents a Quick Disengage option for breaking target lock cleanly. Hold the dodge button to unlock from the current target, then press sprint to run away. This is useful when you need distance rather than another attack and the camera keeps pulling you back toward an enemy.

  1. While locked onto an enemy, hold the dodge button shown by your device’s prompt.
  2. Confirm that the target lock releases.
  3. Press sprint and move away from the fight.

Button names vary between keyboard, mouse, and controllers, so follow the prompts displayed in your game. Quick Disengage changes the escape input; it does not make Geralt invulnerable while retreating. Use terrain and stamina awareness as you would with any other withdrawal.

Check controls and supported peripherals before troubleshooting

If an option appears unavailable or an input does not respond, first verify the control scheme and bindings rather than assuming that new hardware is required. CD PROJEKT RED’s controls troubleshooting guidance recommends checking key bindings and the selected control scheme and notes that defaults can be restored.

Supported input categories

Platform or use Peripherals identified by CD PROJEKT RED
PC Keyboard and mouse; Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S controllers are partially supported
Xbox console generations named by support Xbox controllers
PlayStation console generations named by support DualShock 4 or DualSense

The complete compatibility list is on the publisher’s Supported peripherals page. An Xbox Series X|S controller is therefore an optional supported choice for someone who needs a controller, not a purchase required to change settings. Compatibility can still depend on the platform and connection method.

Restore a known control state

  1. Open the controls menu and confirm that the intended control scheme is selected.
  2. Inspect the binding for the action that is failing, including dodge, sprint, Sign switching, and target lock.
  3. Restore default bindings if a custom layout is producing conflicts.
  4. Re-test the action in a safe area before changing several other settings.

Understand the platform and version differences

The feature lists for PC, console, and Nintendo Switch are not identical. The Next-Gen notes include options such as controller slow-walk and alternative sprint behavior, while the Remastered notes add distinct capabilities for PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch 2. PC graphics settings and Switch 2 input capabilities are platform-specific examples, not universal entries that every player should expect to see.

Use the settings actually presented by your edition. If a guide describes a path or toggle that is missing, check whether you are running the Remastered release, the earlier Next-Gen version, or a Switch build before changing unrelated controls. The Next-Gen announcement and REDstreams summary provides additional context for the earlier camera, interface, and control changes; the Remastered notes identify the newer additions.

Starting presets for different play styles

These are decision frameworks, not tested performance presets. Start with the row closest to your goal, then change only the setting that still causes trouble.

Goal Starting choices Trade-off to watch
Combat immediacy Quick Sign Casting on; dynamic combat camera on; Quick Disengage available Direct inputs require practice, and a dynamic camera may feel unfamiliar
Clean exploration Hide the exploration minimap and objectives; use the default map filter; try the wider exploration camera Fewer persistent navigation cues and fewer visible map markers
Complete map searching Keep HUD choices comfortable; switch the map to All while surveying an area; use the exploration camera you can read most easily More icons create a busier map and can make route planning slower
Riding control Adjust horse input sensitivity in small increments; retain the camera distance that keeps the route readable There is no sourced universal slider value, so the final choice is personal

A short test routine after changing settings

  1. Change one option and write down what problem you expect it to solve.
  2. Test ordinary movement first, then a combat encounter, then horseback travel if the setting affects those activities.
  3. Check both information availability and physical comfort: can you see what matters, and can you reach the required input reliably?
  4. If the result is worse, revert that single option before trying another combination.
  5. Keep a balanced setup for normal play and switch temporarily to All map mode or visible HUD elements when a specific task requires more information.

The goal is a control and interface layout that reduces interruptions without hiding information you personally rely on. Quick Sign Casting, the camera choices, HUD visibility, map mode, horse sensitivity, and Quick Disengage each solve a different friction point; use only the changes that make your own combat and exploration clearer.
