The Witcher 3 has three save categories—manual saves, autosaves, and checkpoint saves—but CD PROJEKT RED does not publish a complete trigger schedule for each one. What is documented is how cross progression treats them: it uploads the latest save in every save category. Before changing platforms, create a fresh save, verify the cloud icon beside it, and use the same linked account on the destination device.
What the three Witcher 3 save types mean
The labels describe categories in the game’s save system, not three interchangeable backups. Each category can represent a different point in your playthrough, and cross progression handles the categories separately.

That distinction matters when you switch devices. “Latest save for every save type” does not mean every historical manual save, autosave, and checkpoint is mirrored indefinitely. Treat the cloud copy as the current cross-progression version of each category, not as a complete archival backup.

For a dependable handoff, use the game’s current Save Game command to create a manual save at the point you want to continue from. The exact button prompt varies by platform and edition, and the official support material does not publish one universal control sequence. Follow the on-screen command shown by your installation rather than relying on a control scheme from another platform.

After creating the save, open the game’s Load Game area and use the cross-progression control described below. This is the important distinction: creating a local save and uploading a save for another platform are separate actions. A save that exists locally is not automatically confirmed as available on the destination until the cloud indicator appears.
A safe routine before quitting
- Create a new manual save after reaching the exact point you want to resume.
- Give it a recognizable name if the game offers that option, so you can distinguish it from older entries.
- Open Load Game and check for the cloud icon beside the save.
- Do not shut down or change platforms until the icon confirms the upload.
Autosaves and checkpoints remain useful for recovering from a mistake, but their creation rules are not documented precisely enough to promise that a particular quest event or elapsed time will generate one. If the decision is important, make a manual save instead.
How cross progression uploads and restores saves
CD PROJEKT RED’s support guidance says cross progression provides the latest save for every save type. The workflow is account-based: the source and destination platforms must be connected to the same account, and the save must be uploaded before you attempt to load it elsewhere.

- Open Load Game. Use the cross-progression control shown in that screen.
- Connect your account. Sign in to or link the requested CD PROJEKT RED account.
- Create a fresh save. Make the manual save you intend to move between devices.
- Confirm the cloud icon. In the save list, look for the cloud icon beside the uploaded entry. If it is absent, regard the save as local until the upload is confirmed.
- Prepare the destination. Install the matching game edition, update it, and connect the destination platform to the same account.
- Open Load Game on the destination. The uploaded save should appear in the list. Select it only after checking that its edition and downloadable-content requirements are satisfied.
The setting can be switched on or off through Options → Gameplay → Cross Progression. Turning the setting off changes whether the feature is active; it does not turn a local save into a cloud backup by itself.
Switch account terminology
A Switch-specific version 4.04 announcement dated July 19, 2023 says cross progression replaced the previous Switch save integration and requires a GOG account regardless of platform. Current in-game prompts should take precedence for the labels you see, but the account requirement remains relevant when a Switch save is part of the transfer.
Why a save can appear to be missing
No cloud icon beside the save
The icon is the practical confirmation that the save was uploaded for cross progression. Return to Load Game, verify that cross progression is enabled, create another manual save, and wait for the icon to appear before leaving the source platform. A local entry without the icon should not be treated as transferable.
The destination is using a different account
Cross progression follows the linked account, not merely the console or PC profile. Sign out if necessary and connect the destination installation to the same account used when the cloud icon appeared on the source.

The game is not fully updated
Support instructions begin with updating to the latest patch. Apply that update on both sides, restart the game, and check Load Game again. Avoid testing a transfer while one installation is several patches behind the other.
You are looking for an older historical save
The documented behavior concerns the latest save in each category. It does not promise that every prior manual entry or every earlier autosave remains in the cloud list. If you need several rollback points, preserve them locally and upload a deliberately chosen current save before switching.
The editions do not match on a console
On consoles, the regular base game and the GOTY/Complete Edition are treated as separate products for local saves. A save stored by one product does not simply appear in the other product’s local save list. Cross progression is the supported route for continuing a base-version save in the other edition.

“Complete Edition” is not merely a different title screen. The destination must contain the content referenced by the save. If a quest, item, region, or other progress depends on an expansion, install that expansion before troubleshooting the account link.

What to check when editions differ
- Identify whether the source is the regular release or GOTY/Complete Edition.
- List the expansions and DLC actually used by the save.
- Install the same required content on the destination.
- Only then investigate account, patch, or cloud-upload problems.
Where are my Witcher 3 save files?
There is no single official local-file path that applies to every platform, and the available guidance does not publish a universal directory for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. On a console, the edition itself affects which local save set the system presents. On any platform using cross progression, the cloud icon is more useful than a presumed folder location: it shows that the selected entry has been uploaded for account-based retrieval.
Think of the save list as having two questions: “Does this installation have a local entry?” and “Has the latest entry in this category been uploaded to cross progression?” A visible local save answers only the first question. The cloud indicator answers the second.

The term appears in official patch material because a fix addressed a freeze when loading a particular checkpoint save with ray tracing enabled. That confirms checkpoint saves are a real category, but it does not establish a checkpoint schedule. It is unsafe to infer that a checkpoint is created at every quest milestone, after a fixed number of minutes, or at the same moment on every platform.
Use checkpoints as recovery points supplied by the game. When you need control over the exact continuation point—before a major choice, a difficult fight, or a platform transfer—create a manual save and verify its cloud status.

Does the Remastered release change save compatibility?
CD PROJEKT RED’s current official game page states: “Your save files remain compatible and Cross Progression will remain functional the same as before.” That is a compatibility statement, not a new description of save triggers. It supports continued use of the established transfer workflow but does not provide an autosave interval, checkpoint rule, or revised local-file path.
Accordingly, apply the same safeguards to a Remastered installation: update both sides, link the same account, create a fresh save, confirm the cloud icon, and verify edition content before loading.
Best practices for protecting progress
- Use manual saves for decisions. Do not rely on an undocumented autosave or checkpoint trigger immediately before an irreversible choice.
- Confirm before switching. A cloud icon is the documented handoff signal; a local save alone is not.
- Keep editions and content aligned. Especially on consoles, regular and GOTY/Complete products have separate local save handling.
- Update both installations. Patch differences can prevent the menu or transfer process from behaving as expected.
- Use one account consistently. The same linked account must be present at the source and destination.
- Do not treat cross progression as full backup history. It provides the latest save for each category, not a stated guarantee of every historical entry.
Practical transfer examples
Moving a base-game console save to Complete Edition
Create a manual save in the base game, enable cross progression from Load Game, connect the account, and wait for the cloud icon. Install Complete Edition on the destination and sign in with that same account. Because the source save contains no expansion content, it can load in Complete Edition once the upload and account checks succeed.
Moving an expansion playthrough to a base-game installation
The account link and cloud icon are necessary but not sufficient. The destination base-game installation must also have every expansion and DLC used by the Complete Edition save. Without that content, the save cannot load there.
Switching from one platform to another without losing the intended point
Do not assume the newest autosave is the point you want. Create a named manual save, verify the cloud icon, then connect the destination to the same account and select that uploaded entry from Load Game. This avoids confusing an automatically created recovery point with your chosen handoff save.
What the official guidance still does not specify
Current support and patch material establish the categories, account workflow, cloud-icon confirmation, edition separation, and content requirements. They do not establish a universal autosave frequency, exact checkpoint triggers, a cross-platform local directory, a guaranteed number of cloud-retained historical saves, or a new trigger system for the Remastered release. Treat any claim that supplies those details as platform-specific advice unless it is backed by current documentation for your exact edition.
