In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, an icon’s meaning depends on where it appears: the gameplay HUD, minimap or world map, skill tree, or Gwent board. The official game manual explains the standard HUD indicators, while the September 2026 Remastered update adds map and quest-tracking changes. It does not provide a complete picture-by-picture key for every new glyph.
Quick way to identify it: check which screen you are on, then read the nearby label, tracked quest, or in-game help. The HUD is customizable, and not every indicator appears at once.
First, identify which screen the icon belongs to
- Gameplay HUD: indicators around Geralt show health, stamina, Signs, toxicity, combat threats, and contextual information.
- Minimap or world map: markers point to objectives and places of interest. Remastered changed quest tracking and added map options.
- Skill tree: symbols identify skill categories, individual skills, and unlock status.
- Gwent board or cards: symbols refer to card strength, rows, abilities, or weather—not navigation or combat HUD systems.
If a shape is unclear, use its location and nearby text as context. The official manual describes many standard HUD functions, but it is an older platform manual, not a complete legend for every Remastered icon.

Gameplay HUD icons and bars
The official CD PROJEKT RED Xbox manual labels the main HUD elements. These functions describe the standard interface; the exact appearance or placement can vary with customization and platform.
#1 Best Overall
- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
| Indicator | What it means |
|---|---|
| Wolf medallion glow | Something of interest is nearby. It is a proximity signal, not by itself a map destination. |
| Vitality bar | Geralt’s remaining health. |
| Stamina bar | Stamina decreases when Geralt uses Signs or sprints. |
| Adrenaline points | Combat points that are gained and lost during fights and increase damage capability. |
| Selected Sign indicator | Shows which Sign is currently selected. |
| Toxicity bar and highlighted skull | The bar rises after Geralt drinks potions. A highlighted skull indicates a dangerous toxicity level. |
| Current buffs/debuffs panel | Lists effects currently applied to Geralt. |
| Targeted-enemy bar | Shows the enemy’s name, level, and remaining health. Its color identifies enemy type: silver for magical-origin enemies and red for other enemy types. The level color conveys relative level; a skull beside the bar marks a major threat. |
| Boss bar | Names the current boss. |
| Oxygen indicator | Shows remaining air while Geralt is diving. |
| Time and weather display | Reports the time of day and current conditions. |
Other useful HUD indicators
- Minimap: shows the surrounding area, the direction of a tracked objective, and nearby points of interest.
- Boat condition diagram: its six sections show the boat’s condition. Red indicates severe damage; black means it will sink.
- Equipment durability: equipment slots show wear; red indicates severe damage.
- Contextual interaction prompt: changes according to what Geralt is facing or able to interact with.
- Quest panel: shows the tracked quest and its objectives. Notifications can announce quest updates, items, fast-travel points, points of interest, level gains, and learned formulae.
- Horse indicators: show the horse’s fear and stamina.
CD PROJEKT RED’s manual notes that “The game’s visuals and display options are highly customizable.” If an indicator is missing or in a different place, check the interface and display settings rather than assuming it has a different meaning.
What changed in Remastered map and quest tracking
CD PROJEKT RED’s Remastered update notes, dated September 28, 2026, describe several map and quest-interface changes. These are distinct from the standard HUD definitions in the legacy manual.
- Untracked quests receive a distinct map marker and can be selected to begin tracking.
- The maximum number of map markers increased, and new markers were added.
- You can hide herbs, boats, and corpses on the minimap through Settings → Video → Interface.
- Quest notifications were consolidated into a single HUD notification.
The update notes do not give a complete pictorial legend for every new marker. For an unfamiliar mark, select it on the map or check the quest panel and in-game help; do not infer its meaning from an older screenshot alone.
Platform details matter: PlayStation’s product page dates the PS5 Remastered upgrade to September 29, 2026, says it is free to existing PS5 owners, and says it does not apply to the PS4 version. Those details concern PlayStation editions; check the relevant platform listing for availability and edition-specific information.

Minimap and world-map markers
The manual’s minimap description covers surroundings, tracked-objective direction, and nearby points of interest. A world-map marker may instead identify a quest, activity, or location. Use the selected marker’s label and the active quest to distinguish its purpose; similar-looking icons can be hard to identify by shape alone.
For broad categories, the Prima Games Complete Edition atlas groups map symbols for main quests, secondary quests, contracts, Gwent quests, fistfights, horse races, scavenger hunts, treasure hunts, and expansion quests. Its points-of-interest legend includes abandoned sites, bandit camps, boats, guarded treasure, monster dens, and monster nests. This is an atlas legend, not proof that every symbol has the same artwork in the Remastered interface.
The atlas also cautions that loot may be in nearby barrels, crates, containers, or bodies even when its map labels a chest; an asterisk can mark an illusion blocking loot. Treat those as guide-specific map-reading notes, not universal meanings for Remastered HUD glyphs.

Skill-tree symbols and Sign icons
Skill-tree symbols identify categories and unlockable abilities rather than world locations. A secondary guide published by TechWiser on October 6, 2026 describes categories including Combat, Signs, Alchemy, General, Mutagens, and locked skills. It also discusses Aard, Igni, Yrden, Quen, and Axii as the five Signs.

- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
That guide maps some visible HUD shapes to Aard, Igni, and Axii, but its reviewed explanation does not provide a complete shape-by-shape key for Yrden and Quen. The official manual confirms that the HUD indicator shows the selected Sign; it does not establish the exact current Remastered glyph for each Sign. If you are unsure, rely on the selected Sign’s label or in-game help instead of treating a third-party shape chart as a complete official key.

Gwent uses its own visual vocabulary. The TechWiser guide’s October 6, 2026 table identifies the following symbols and terms. These descriptions are from that secondary guide; an official Gwent rules source was not reviewed for this article.
| Gwent symbol or label | Meaning described by the guide |
|---|---|
| Unit strength | The card’s strength value. |
| Close Combat, Ranged, and Siege rows | The three rows where unit cards are played. |
| Morale Boost | An ability that boosts units in the same row. |
| Card count | Shows the number of cards remaining in the relevant count display. |
| Hero | Marks a Hero card. |
| Scorch | A card or effect identified as Scorch. |
| Muster | An ability identified as Muster. |
| Commander’s Horn | An ability or card identified as Commander’s Horn. |
| Biting Frost, Impenetrable Fog, and Torrential Rain | Weather effects associated with the relevant rows. |
| Clear Weather | A card or effect identified as Clear Weather. |
| Decoy | A card or ability identified as Decoy. |
| Spy | Marks a Spy card. |
| Tight Bond | An ability identified as Tight Bond. |
| Medic | Marks a Medic card. |
When a symbol appears on a card rather than beside Geralt’s health or on the map, interpret it as part of Gwent’s card and row system—not as a general gameplay status indicator.

Use the official manual for named HUD functions, the update notes for what Remastered changed, and map or card guides as context when a label is not enough. The game’s own selected-object label and interface help are the safest checks for an ambiguous symbol.
