To open Photo Mode in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, press U on PC, L3 + R3 on PlayStation, or LS + RS on Xbox. Those shortcuts and the platform capture paths are listed by CD PROJEKT RED Support. The September 29, 2026 Remastered release adds a much larger set of camera, character, environment, and composition controls, so older guides describe only part of the current feature.

These are the controls and destinations in the current support article. Console menu names can change with system-software updates; if a label differs on your system, open the console’s general capture library and look for the game’s screenshots. The reviewed official support information does not provide a Nintendo Switch 2 Photo Mode shortcut or a Switch 2 screenshot-library path, so no button combination or folder should be assumed for that platform.

What to do if the shortcut appears not to work
- Make sure the game has focus on PC; a different window can receive the key press instead.
- On a controller, click both listed sticks at the same time rather than moving them.
- Verify that you are using the Remastered or supported game build and not relying on a keybinding from an unrelated mod or overlay.
- If Photo Mode opens but you cannot find the image, check the destination above immediately and then check your platform’s broader capture library.
Which version has the expanded Photo Mode?
CD PROJEKT RED announced The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, with release on September 29, 2026. Qualifying previous owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S can upgrade at no cost; the announcement also describes a Switch-to-Switch 2 claim route. Eligibility is tied to the account and store that owns the game, so check that platform’s listing before expecting an upgrade.

The Remastered release notes dated September 28, 2026 describe a substantially revised Photo Mode. They state: “Updated the Photo Mode UI and vastly expanded its features and options:” The notes list the capabilities below. An older support-page tutorial remains useful for the activation shortcut and capture destinations, but it is not a complete description of the Remastered controls.
What settings are in Remastered Photo Mode?
Camera position and repeatable viewpoints
You can move the camera to frame a subject, then lock the camera position while you adjust other elements. The mode also lets you save and reuse camera presets, which is useful when you want several shots from one established angle or need to rebuild a scene after experimenting. The interface displays camera coordinates, giving you a visible reference for a viewpoint rather than requiring you to remember it by eye.
A first-person camera mode provides a different perspective from the usual third-person framing. A camera-collision toggle controls whether the camera is constrained by surrounding geometry. The release notes identify both options, but do not publish a universal key assignment for each setting; use the on-screen Remastered Photo Mode controls for the exact input on your platform.

Aspect ratio, overlays, and cinematic framing
Remastered Photo Mode lets you change the screenshot aspect ratio. Choose the ratio before fine-tuning composition so the visible frame matches the image you intend to keep. A Rule-of-Thirds overlay can be shown in different aspect ratios, helping place faces, weapons, or horizon lines consistently. Optional cinematic bars add letterbox-style framing when that is part of the look you want.
Because changing the ratio changes the boundaries of the final image, a composition that works in a wide frame may cut off a character in a taller one. Set the ratio, enable the overlay if useful, and then make the final camera adjustments.
Characters, poses, and expressions
Several characters can be placed in one shot. Geralt and placeable characters have selectable poses and expressions, allowing you to direct a scene instead of waiting for an incidental animation. Build the arrangement one character at a time: place the primary subject, select a pose and expression, then add supporting characters and check that no body, weapon, or foreground element overlaps the focal point.
The interface can also hide surrounding non-player characters. Use that option when a busy town, road, or battlefield supplies unwanted background figures. It is distinct from choosing a pose for a character you intentionally place in the frame.
Environment, weather, and time of day
Environment presets provide a starting look for the scene. After selecting one, you can adjust time of day and weather, then control weather-effect intensity. This lets you decide whether rain, snow, mist, or another effect supports the subject or overwhelms it. A low-intensity effect can retain environmental detail, while a stronger setting can make the weather itself the visual focus; the release notes document the control, not a required or “best” intensity value.
Props and scene detail
Remastered Photo Mode includes placeable props. A prop can supply foreground framing, reinforce the location, or add a small narrative cue. Check the edges of the frame after placing one: an object near the camera can hide a character or pull attention away from the intended subject.
Mouse and interface behavior on PC
On PC with a mouse, the cursor is visible in Photo Mode. Keep that behavior in mind when composing a clean capture, especially if the pointer sits over a face or another important detail while you are reviewing the image. The release notes do not specify a separate cursor-hiding command, so use the controls shown by your installed build rather than assuming a key from another game.

A practical Photo Mode workflow
- Open the mode and establish the frame. Press your platform shortcut, move the camera, and select the aspect ratio you plan to use. If you want a cinematic presentation, decide whether to enable cinematic bars now.
- Use a composition guide. Turn on the Rule-of-Thirds lines in the ratio you selected. Place the main face, character, or landscape feature near a useful intersection rather than adjusting the overlay after the composition is finished.
- Set the scene. Pick an environment preset, then adjust time of day, weather, and weather-effect intensity. Recheck contrast and visibility after every large weather or lighting change.
- Direct the cast. Add the characters you need, choose each pose and expression, and remove or hide nearby NPCs that create clutter. If the frame needs a foreground layer or a contextual detail, add a placeable prop.
- Refine the viewpoint. Try first-person or the normal camera perspective, and use the collision toggle when surrounding geometry prevents the angle you want. Watch the displayed camera coordinates if you are building a viewpoint you may want to reproduce.
- Lock and save. Lock the camera while making final scene changes, then save a camera preset if you want to reuse the position or angle for a second shot.
- Capture and verify. Take the screenshot using the capture control shown in your Photo Mode interface, leave the mode, and confirm the file in the PC screenshots folder or the relevant console capture library.
Where Witcher 3 screenshots are saved
PC
CD PROJEKT RED lists this Windows location:
%userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3screenshots
Paste the path into File Explorer’s address bar. The %userprofile% portion resolves to the Windows account that launched the game, so another Windows user account can have a different folder. If the folder is not visible, first take a new capture, then check the path again and confirm that the game is writing to the expected user profile.
PlayStation
Use Settings → Storage → System Storage → Capture Gallery → The Witcher 3 according to the support page. The exact wording can vary with the installed system-software revision. If you do not see that precise sequence, open Capture Gallery and filter or browse to The Witcher 3.
Xbox
Press the Xbox button and open Capture & share → Recent captures. From there, locate the image and use the console’s normal management or sharing controls.
Nintendo Switch 2
The official passages used for this guide do not state a Switch 2 Photo Mode shortcut or a Switch 2 capture-library location. The game is listed for Switch 2, but a platform-specific button or menu path should be confirmed in Nintendo’s current system documentation or the game’s on-screen instructions rather than copied from PlayStation, Xbox, or PC.

| Question | What the official material establishes |
|---|---|
| How do I open Photo Mode? | PC: U; PlayStation: L3 + R3; Xbox: LS + RS. |
| Where is the capture stored? | PC screenshots folder; PlayStation Capture Gallery; Xbox Recent captures. Switch 2 path: not stated. |
| Does the current version have more options? | Yes. Remastered’s September 28, 2026 notes say the UI and options were vastly expanded. |
| What creative controls are listed? | Multiple characters, poses and expressions, camera lock and presets, aspect ratios, first-person view, collision toggle, environment presets, weather and time, weather intensity, Rule-of-Thirds overlays, cinematic bars, coordinates, NPC hiding, and placeable props. |
| Are exact keybindings for every new option published? | No. Use the controls displayed by the installed Remastered build. |
This distinction matters when troubleshooting an older tutorial. A guide that mentions only a single camera and a basic filter may reflect an earlier version, while the Remastered interface exposes additional scene and composition controls.
Common problems and sensible fixes
The shortcut does nothing
Confirm the platform combination, click both controller sticks when required, and ensure the game window is active on PC. If you changed input settings or use an overlay, temporarily return focus to the game and try again. Do not substitute the PlayStation or Xbox combination for the PC key.
The image is not in the expected folder or library
Take one fresh capture, then check the exact platform destination. On PC, paste the support-listed path into File Explorer; on consoles, open the system capture application rather than looking only inside the game. If a console’s labels differ, follow its current Capture Gallery or capture-library terminology.
The Remastered options are missing
Check that you launched the Remastered release on a supported platform and that the title has finished updating. The expanded feature list applies to the Remastered release; an older installation or a different game build may show a smaller interface. The official material does not establish a separate downloadable Photo Mode package.
The composition changes after an adjustment
Changing aspect ratio, camera perspective, weather, or an environment preset can alter what is visible. Set the ratio and broad environment first, then place characters and props, and make the final camera lock only after those decisions are complete.

The official passages do not provide a complete key-by-key map for every new Remastered setting, behavior during cutscenes, or a Switch 2 screenshot path. They also do not establish a required controller, camera accessory, or PC utility: Photo Mode is a built-in game feature. Treat third-party claims about undocumented shortcuts or special capture folders as unverified unless they match a platform-specific official source.
