Choose PS5 if image quality, ray-tracing options, and dependable high frame rates matter most. Choose Switch 2 if you want to play The Witcher 3 handheld or move between handheld and TV play. The native Switch 2 Remastered edition is a major upgrade over the 2019 Switch release, but its dynamic resolution and frame-rate compromises remain visible beside the PS5 version. A 40 FPS option on Switch 2 requires a 120 Hz display and can drop into the 30s in demanding scenes; on a 60 Hz display, the game is capped at 30 FPS.
This comparison covers the native Nintendo Switch 2 release launched on September 29, 2026, and the PS5 Remastered version. It does not treat the older Switch 1 port as evidence for how the new edition performs.
What is different about the Switch 2 and PS5 editions?
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered is now available as a native Switch 2 release, separate from the original Switch 1 Complete Edition. CD PROJEKT RED launched the Switch 2 version on September 29, 2026, with upgraded assets and platform-specific features. The PS5 version is the current-generation Remastered edition with selectable graphics modes.
The underlying adventure is the same complete game, including the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions. The important differences are rendering quality, frame-rate choices, display requirements, portability, controls, and upgrade eligibility.

The technical snapshot below reflects information available in October 2026. CD PROJEKT RED said on October 8 that a Switch 2 update was in development to improve parity with other versions and sharpen image quality, but it did not give a release date. A later patch can therefore change some of the conclusions in this article.
Graphics and image quality: does The Witcher 3 look better on Switch 2 or PS5?
PS5 offers the higher-fidelity presentation. Its hardware supports the Remastered visual feature set at substantially higher performance targets, including a dedicated ray-tracing mode. Switch 2 looks considerably cleaner and more detailed than the old Switch port, especially when docked, but it uses dynamic internal resolution and reconstruction to fit the game into a lower-power device.
Switch 2 resolution and reconstruction
Independent Digital Foundry measurements reported by Nintendo Life on October 4, 2026 and Nintendo Everything on October 3, 2026 found a dynamic internal resolution range of 540p to 1080p while docked. The game reconstructs that image with DLSS toward a 1080p output target.
In handheld mode, the reported internal range is 360p to 720p, with DLSS targeting 720p output. Output resolution is not the same as native rendering resolution: the console may render below the target and reconstruct the final image. The result can look sharp in straightforward scenes while revealing softer detail, shimmering, or unstable edges when the internal resolution falls.
Switch 2 also improves textures, foliage, lighting, shading, environmental assets, NPCs, and monsters compared with Switch 1. A T3 hands-on review described the new version as much less blurry than the previous port, while noting fuzzy handheld edges that become clearer when docked. That is an individual reviewer’s observation rather than a controlled laboratory comparison.

No Switch 2 ray-tracing mode is listed in the technical information available for this comparison. Do not assume that the Remastered label means the Switch 2 edition has the same ray-tracing feature set as PS5.
PS5 graphics modes
PlayStation’s product page lists two principal modes for the standard PS5:

The same PlayStation product page describes 4K and HDR support. That does not mean every scene is rendered natively at 4K: the selected mode, display, and rendering method determine what appears on screen. A compatible HDMI 2.1 display is required for certain visual enhancements.
PS5 Pro options
On PS5 Pro, PlayStation lists ray tracing at 60 FPS. Its Performance Mode is also listed at 60 FPS with higher resolution, and both modes support VRR and uncapped frame rates. PlayStation says Performance Mode can reach up to 90 FPS when VRR is active. Those are the platform holder’s listed capabilities, not an independent frame-time test, so actual results depend on the display and scene.
What the visual difference looks like in practice
- PS5 maintains finer distant detail, denser foliage, cleaner shadows, and more stable image quality on a large TV.
- Switch 2 docked mode is a substantial step above Switch 1, but reconstruction artifacts and dynamic resolution are easier to notice during camera movement, busy settlements, and combat.
- Handheld Switch 2 play trades some clarity for a portable screen. The smaller display can make the softness less distracting than it appears on a large television.
- PS5’s ray-tracing option is the choice for players who want the most advanced lighting presentation; Switch 2’s strengths are its improved assets and flexibility rather than maximum fidelity.
Performance and frame rate: how does Witcher 3 run on Switch 2 compared with PS5?
PS5 gives you a straightforward choice between a 30 FPS ray-tracing presentation and a 60 FPS performance presentation. Switch 2 has a 30 FPS path for 60 Hz output and an optional 40 FPS cap when connected to a 120 Hz display, but the higher cap is not sustained everywhere.

Switch 2 frame-rate behavior
The Digital Foundry findings relayed by Nintendo Life and Nintendo Everything report a 30 FPS cap when the console outputs at 60 Hz. If the console and display are set to 120 Hz, a 40 FPS cap becomes available. That 40 FPS setting is not a locked 40 FPS experience: the reports describe drops into the 30s in demanding areas such as Novigrad and during combat with several enemies.

Patch 5.01, released for PS5 on October 8, 2026, fixed frame-rate-limit issues in PS5 graphics modes. Check that the console has installed current updates before judging performance.
Which version feels smoother?
For a dependable high-frame-rate experience, standard PS5 Performance Mode is the simpler choice: select it and target 60 FPS without requiring a 120 Hz television. PS5 Pro offers the broadest range if you own a VRR display. Switch 2 can feel responsive at its 40 FPS cap, but the display requirement and scene-dependent dips make it less predictable. Its 30 FPS mode is the safer setting when consistency matters more than the extra fluidity.
Portability and display flexibility
Portability is Switch 2’s decisive advantage. You can play the full Remastered game on the built-in screen, place the console in its dock for television play, and continue the same save without buying a second edition. PS5 is designed for home-console use; playing away from the console requires a separate remote-play setup and a suitable network, rather than a self-contained handheld mode.

Handheld play
Handheld Switch 2 uses the reported 360p–720p dynamic internal range and 720p DLSS output target. The image is softer than docked mode, particularly around foliage, hair, thin geometry, and distant objects. The smaller screen can reduce how obvious those artifacts are, and the ability to play in bed, while travelling, or away from the television may outweigh the loss in clarity.
Docked play
Docked Switch 2 raises the reported internal range to 540p–1080p and targets 1080p output through DLSS. It is the better way to use the Switch 2 version on a large television, although it still does not offer the PS5’s graphics-mode range. If you mainly play at home on a 4K screen and sit close to it, PS5’s cleaner image and optional ray tracing are easier to appreciate.
VRR and HDR on Switch 2
The Switch 2 feature list includes handheld VRR and HDR. VRR can help a compatible screen present variable frame delivery more smoothly, but it does not turn a fluctuating 40 FPS mode into a locked one. HDR support likewise depends on a compatible display and correct console settings; it is not a substitute for higher internal resolution.
Controls and platform-specific features
Switch 2 adds several ways to interact with the game that are not available in the same form on PS5:
- Motion controls and gyro aiming for compatible actions.
- Mouse controls when using supported Switch 2 input.
- Touch-screen input in handheld use.
- Joy-Con 2 HD Rumble.
- Handheld VRR and HDR support.
These options are preferences rather than universal image-quality improvements. Gyro aiming can feel useful for fine adjustments, while touch and mouse input may appeal to players who prefer direct menu or cursor control. Players who value controller effects on PS5 get DualSense adaptive triggers and haptics. PlayStation also lists Tempest 3D Audio support when using compatible headphones.

Current patch status and why the verdict can change
On October 8, 2026, CD PROJEKT RED published Patch 5.01 notes and said: “In addition to this, we are also working on an update for the Nintendo Switch 2 version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, introducing closer parity between all versions of the game, including the same global changes as on other platforms.” The studio added that the update would improve Switch 2-specific image clarity and sharpness. Because no release date was included for that Switch 2 update, the resolution and frame-rate observations above describe the October 2026 state, not a permanent technical ceiling. Before buying or publishing a final comparison, check the console’s installed version and the latest patch notes.
Free upgrades and buying eligibility
Existing ownership can change the value calculation more than the hardware differences. CD PROJEKT RED’s launch announcement and Remastered FAQ state that owners of the original Switch game can claim the native Switch 2 Remastered version for free. The launch details are also documented in CD PROJEKT RED’s September 29 announcement.

PlayStation states that existing PS5 owners receive the PS5 Remastered upgrade. A PS4 copy alone does not qualify for that PS5 upgrade, according to the PlayStation product information.

As of October 4, 2026, Nintendo Life reported that the Switch 2 Remastered release was eShop-only. The older physical Switch Complete Edition may therefore be a way to establish qualifying ownership for the free Switch 2 upgrade, but it is still the original Switch product, not a physical Switch 2 Remastered cartridge. Verify edition, region, account eligibility, and availability before buying an older copy.
Storage and installation
Nintendo Life reported a 55 GB install size for the Switch 2 version. Plan for at least that much free storage, plus space for system data and future patches. The figure is a reported 2026 storage requirement and can change with updates; consult the current eShop listing before installing.
Which version should you choose?
Choose Switch 2 when portability is the priority
- You want the complete game in handheld mode rather than being tied to a television.
- You regularly switch between handheld and docked play.
- You value gyro, motion, touch, mouse input, or Joy-Con 2 HD Rumble.
- You already own the original Switch game and can claim the native version at no additional game cost.
- You accept a softer handheld image and a 30 FPS cap on a 60 Hz display.
Choose PS5 when visual fidelity and frame-rate options come first
- You play primarily on a large television or monitor.
- You want a simple 60 FPS Performance Mode on standard PS5.
- You want ray-traced visuals at 30 FPS on PS5, or the higher ray-tracing and VRR options listed for PS5 Pro.
- You are sensitive to dynamic-resolution changes, fuzzy edges, or dips from the Switch 2 40 FPS setting.
- You already own a qualifying PS5 copy and can claim the Remastered upgrade.

Recommended settings for each platform
Switch 2
- Use docked mode when image clarity on a large screen matters most.
- Set the console and television to 120 Hz only if both devices support it and you want to test the 40 FPS cap.
- Use the 30 FPS cap when you prefer steadier pacing in Novigrad, large battles, and other demanding scenes.
- Enable HDR and handheld VRR only when your display supports them and the result looks correct; otherwise, leave the display at its stable default.
- Install the latest game update, since CD PROJEKT RED has announced Switch 2-specific clarity and parity work.
PS5
- Select Ray Tracing Mode for lighting and visual detail at the listed 30 FPS target.
- Select Performance Mode for the listed 60 FPS target and faster response.
- On PS5 Pro, use a compatible VRR display if you want the listed uncapped behavior and up-to-90-FPS potential in Performance Mode.
- Use an HDMI 2.1 connection when your display and the selected visual enhancements require it.
- Install Patch 5.01 or any later update before evaluating frame-rate behavior.
Bottom line: Switch 2 portability, PS5 performance
The native Switch 2 Remastered edition is the best way to play The Witcher 3 away from a television and a meaningful technical improvement over Switch 1. Its handheld mode, dockable design, motion and touch options, and free upgrade for original Switch owners make it compelling even though the image is softer and the 40 FPS option is conditional.
