If The Witcher 3 keeps crashing, stutters after an update, or delivers unexpectedly low FPS, first confirm which edition and patch you are running. The December 2022 next-gen update and the September 29, 2026 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered release do not share identical requirements or fixes. Install the latest patch for your edition, verify the game files, disable overlays and unnecessary background software, then perform a clean graphics-driver installation. Change one variable at a time so you can identify whether the fault is a damaged file, a driver conflict, an overloaded setting, or a version-specific bug.
Check your edition before applying a fix
Advice written for the 2022 next-gen update is not automatically valid for the later Remastered edition. Open the launcher or platform library and note the exact game name, version number, and launcher. Then install the newest patch offered for that platform before changing settings.

The hotfix is a targeted correction, not a guarantee that every crash or stutter has the same cause. Record the version before testing so a support report can distinguish an old-build problem from a current-patch problem.
What to record before changing anything
Write down the symptom and the conditions in which it appears. A crash during launch points to a different branch of testing than a repeatable hitch when entering Novigrad. Record:

- Launcher or store used.
- Windows version.
- CPU, GPU, installed memory, and graphics-driver version.
- Display resolution and refresh rate.
- Graphics preset, ray tracing or path tracing state, HairWorks state, upscaling mode, and frame-generation state if available.
- Whether the problem began after a game patch, driver update, setting change, or hardware change.
- The exact location, quest, menu, or action that triggers the fault.
Change only one item between runs. This prevents a driver update, an overlay shutdown, and a lower resolution from being credited with the same improvement.
Use the official PC troubleshooting sequence
1. Check the requirements for your exact version
Use CD PROJEKT RED’s current PC requirements page for the edition you actually installed. The page now lists Minimum, Recommended, Ultra, RT Minimum, RT Recommended, and Path Tracing configurations. Its expected frame rates come from publisher quality-assurance testing and can fluctuate by scene, gameplay, graphics settings, system configuration, and output resolution.
Do not treat a published tier as a performance guarantee. A machine can meet a tier and still dip in a busy scene, while a system above the tier can stutter because of a driver, overlay, damaged file, or background process.
2. Verify the game files
Run the file-verification or repair command in your launcher: Steam, GOG, Epic, or another supported store. The launcher compares installed data with its catalog and replaces files that are missing or corrupted. Restart the launcher and the computer after the repair, then test the same save and location.
Verification is useful for crashes after an interrupted update, missing assets, unexplained startup failures, and visual corruption. It does not change unsupported graphics settings or repair an unstable driver, so continue through the sequence if the symptom remains.
3. Disable overlays and isolate background software
Temporarily disable overlays from Discord, Ubisoft Connect, and Galaxy, then retest. Close unnecessary applications as well, especially hardware-monitoring utilities and antivirus or anti-malware software that may hook into a game process. This is an isolation step, not advice to remove security software permanently: re-enable protection after testing.
If the game works only with one overlay disabled, turn overlays back on individually to identify the conflict. Keep a note of the result rather than disabling every application indefinitely.

4. Clean-install the graphics driver
Use the current installation instructions from your GPU manufacturer. CD PROJEKT RED’s guidance is to remove old driver versions before performing a clean installation; its performance guidance points NVIDIA owners to NVIDIA’s driver-download page and AMD owners to AMD support and its cleanup utility.
- Download the driver and any manufacturer cleanup tool from the manufacturer’s official support site.
- Close the game and other graphics-intensive applications.
- Remove the previous driver using the manufacturer’s supported clean-install procedure.
- Install the downloaded driver, restart Windows, and test with the same game settings.
If the problem began immediately after a driver update, test the immediately previous driver instead. The publisher notes that an older driver can sometimes help; it does not prescribe one universal version for every GPU and game build.
5. Escalate with useful evidence
After requirements, file verification, overlay isolation, and driver testing, contact the publisher through its official support form. Include the version, launcher, Windows and hardware details, driver version, settings, and a precise reproduction path. A short video is useful when possible. If a particular location or save triggers the issue, include the save files from %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves.
Describe what changed between tests and identify the first step that altered the symptom. That lets support evaluate a reproducible fault instead of a general report that the game is slow or unstable.

Fix crashes on PC
When the game crashes at launch
- Confirm that the launcher installed the latest patch for your edition.
- Verify the files.
- Disable all listed overlays and nonessential applications.
- Perform a clean GPU-driver installation.
- Test again with demanding features disabled, especially ray tracing, path tracing, and HairWorks.
Test from a new game or a different save as well as the original save. If only one save crashes, preserve it and send it with the report instead of repeatedly overwriting it.
When a crash happens in one area or during one action
Reproduce the crash after file verification and with overlays disabled. Note the location, quest, camera action, and graphics settings. A repeatable location-specific crash is the kind for which the support team asks for a video and save files. Avoid changing several settings before recording the reproduction, because the original trigger may disappear without being identified.
When a crash follows a driver update
Use the clean-install procedure first. If the crash began directly after the update, test the immediately previous driver. Do not copy a driver number from another player’s report as a universal solution; GPU model, Windows build, and game edition all matter.

Fix stuttering and low FPS
Start with resolution and rendering load
CD PROJEKT RED’s current requirements page states that higher resolution will significantly affect FPS. For diagnosis, keep the same preset and lower output resolution temporarily. If frame pacing improves, the display resolution or rendering load is a major contributor. Restore resolution after each controlled comparison so you know which change mattered.

The 2022 next-gen update introduced PC ray tracing alongside DLSS, so a preset that was reasonable for the older version can be demanding on current hardware.
Test upscaling without changing several variables
Compare the available upscaling modes at the same resolution and preset. Keep ray tracing, HairWorks, and other options unchanged for the first comparison. Upscaling can alter image quality as well as performance, so judge both frame pacing and visual clarity. The correct mode depends on your GPU, output resolution, and edition.
Use HairWorks as a specific diagnostic
If stuttering or visual problems began around the October 2026 update, test HairWorks off and confirm that hotfix 5.00c or a newer platform patch is installed. CD PROJEKT RED says hotfix 5.00c reverted a change that caused significant performance and visual issues with HairWorks enabled for some users. That statement applies to affected users, not every system, so keep HairWorks off only if the controlled comparison shows it is involved.
Check frame pacing, not only the average
A high average FPS can coexist with visible hitches. Use the same route, camera movement, and save for each test and note whether the hitch occurs at regular intervals, during asset streaming, or only in a crowded scene. Close monitoring utilities during one test because the publisher lists hardware-monitoring software among applications worth isolating.

Requirements, SSDs, and Windows 10
The current requirements page says the newer technical enhancements require an SSD. That is a platform requirement for the current configuration, not proof that buying an SSD will cure every crash or stutter. If the game is already installed on an SSD and still misbehaves, continue with file, overlay, driver, and version checks.
The same page says Windows 10 may continue to run the game, but CD PROJEKT RED no longer develops or tests on Windows 10 and cannot guarantee future compatibility or performance. In its wording, the game will not necessarily stop running with the next update; the qualification is that support and testing have ended. Treat Windows 10 as a compatibility risk when reporting a problem, not as proof of the cause.

The page also explains that the publisher selected the Turing-based GTX 1660 as the minimum NVIDIA GPU because Game Ready Driver support ended for Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta. This is the publisher’s requirements rationale, not an independent performance guarantee.
How to interpret the current requirements tiers
The six labels on the current page describe different feature targets rather than a promise that every scene will maintain one frame rate. Minimum and Recommended describe baseline configurations, while Ultra represents a heavier conventional preset. RT Minimum and RT Recommended add ray-traced rendering, and Path Tracing represents the most demanding lighting option listed. Match the tier to the features you intend to use; meeting a non-RT tier does not establish that ray tracing or path tracing will perform well.
Resolution is part of the comparison. The publisher specifically warns that higher output resolution significantly affects FPS, so a system that behaves acceptably at one resolution can struggle at a higher one without any hardware fault. Record the resolution alongside the preset when comparing results or asking for help.
When a setting change does not help
No improvement after lowering resolution or disabling ray tracing is useful information. It makes a purely rendering-load explanation less likely and moves file integrity, overlays, drivers, background software, and edition-specific bugs higher on the checklist. Likewise, if verification changes nothing, do not repeat it indefinitely; proceed to the next isolation step and preserve the exact test conditions.
Stutter that appears only in one save or location should be documented rather than “fixed” by deleting the save. Keep a backup, reproduce the issue with a short recording, and identify whether another save reaches the same area normally. Support can do more with a preserved, repeatable example than with an overwritten file.

These are diagnostic comparisons, not universal recommendations. Keep the setting that gives your hardware stable frame pacing and acceptable image quality, then report the losing configuration if you need support.
Console troubleshooting
The 2022 update added console performance/ray-tracing and performance/quality modes. On a console, install the newest update offered by the platform, restart after installation, and compare the available modes using the same save and location. If the problem began after moving to a later Remastered edition, verify that the console is running the Remastered patch rather than applying advice intended for the 2022 build.

Because the detailed isolation sequence above is for PC, do not apply PC driver instructions to a console. Preserve the save, note the edition and patch, record the mode selected, and use the publisher’s support form if the issue remains reproducible.
What not to buy as a first fix
Official troubleshooting for these symptoms centers on software diagnostics: patching, file verification, overlay isolation, driver installation, and support evidence. There is no general evidence that buying a new game edition, SSD, graphics card, or physical maintenance tool will fix an unknown crash or stutter. An SSD matters when the current technical-enhancement requirements call for one, but that requirement alone does not diagnose your machine.
Establish a specific hardware shortfall first. If your system fails the applicable requirements, an upgrade may be a separate decision; it should not replace the no-cost diagnostic sequence or be presented as a guaranteed cure.
