There is no single best Witcher armor set in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Feline favors fast offensive play, Griffin supports Signs, Ursine trades mobility for protection, and Wolven is a balanced option. Your choice also depends on the exact piece, upgrade tier, level requirement, and whether you own Blood and Wine. Manticore belongs to that expansion and follows its own diagram hunt.
Witcher gear is acquired through diagrams and scavenger-hunt clues, then crafted by an appropriate armorer or swordsmith. Treat the set descriptions below as build guidance, not as a ranking by armor number alone.

Which Witcher 3 armor set is best?
The best set is the one whose weight, bonuses, and tier match how you deal damage and survive. A light set can improve an attack-focused build while giving up some protection; heavy armor can absorb more punishment but may not suit a stamina- or mobility-dependent setup. Sign users generally look first at Griffin, while players who want a broad, forgiving profile often choose Wolven.
Do not compare only the armor-rating number shown on one chest piece. Compare weight, resistances, attack or Sign bonuses, level requirement, upgrade tier, and the rest of your build. A Grandmaster set also has matching-piece effects that ordinary versions do not have.

How Witcher gear, tiers, and set bonuses work
Diagrams come before crafted equipment
Witcher equipment is not normally picked up as a complete suit. You obtain a diagram for a chest, gauntlets, trousers, boots, or weapon, gather the listed materials, and pay a qualified crafter to make it. A map or quest clue starts many of the hunts, but the clue is not the item itself: it points you toward the diagram.
Upgrade tiers change the item
The standard progression described for the school sets is Basic, Enhanced, Superior, and Mastercrafted. Each tier is a separate diagram and a separate crafted item, with its own level requirement and statistics. Finding a Basic diagram does not automatically unlock the Enhanced or Mastercrafted version. When a hunt offers several stages, track the tier named in the quest or diagram before spending materials.
Grandmaster is an expansion tier
Blood and Wine adds Grandmaster Witcher gear. Grandmaster items require that expansion and are not simply the next ordinary upgrade available in the base game. The expansion tier adds bonuses for wearing matching pieces from the same school. Those matching-school bonuses should not be attributed to Basic, Enhanced, Superior, or Mastercrafted equipment.

The table gives the practical comparison available without pretending that every item in a school has one fixed statistic. Values change by piece and tier; cells marked “not stated” require checking the exact in-game item.
| School/set | Armor weight | Build fit | Typical emphasis | Tier and level | Blood and Wine required? | Acquisition route |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Feline (Cat) | Light-oriented | Fast attacks, critical or mobility-focused offense | Attack-oriented bonuses; individual resistances vary | Basic through Mastercrafted; exact level depends on piece | No for ordinary tiers; yes for Grandmaster Feline | School diagrams followed through scavenger-hunt clues, then crafted |
| Griffin | Weight and values depend on the item | Sign-centered builds | Sign-oriented bonuses; Grandmaster effects are separate | Basic through Mastercrafted; exact level depends on piece | No for ordinary tiers; yes for Grandmaster Griffin | School diagrams and scavenger-hunt quests, then crafting |
| Ursine (Bear) | Heavy-oriented | Defensive, damage-absorbing builds | Protection and heavier armor, with an offensive trade-off | Basic through Mastercrafted; exact level depends on piece | No for ordinary tiers; yes for Grandmaster Ursine | School diagrams and scavenger-hunt quests, then crafting |
| Wolven (Wolf) | Balanced profile | General-purpose or hybrid builds | Balanced offense and defense; exact bonuses vary by item | Basic through Mastercrafted; exact level depends on piece | No for ordinary tiers; yes for Grandmaster Wolven | School diagrams and scavenger-hunt quests, then crafting |

Feline (Cat): light armor for attack-focused play
Feline is the natural starting point for a player who values offense, quick attacks, and movement. Its school identity is light and attack-oriented, so it is most attractive when your build already rewards staying mobile and striking often. The description does not mean every Feline piece has identical defenses or that every tier gives the same attack value.
Check each diagram’s level requirement before planning a complete suit. A higher-tier chest can have a different defensive profile from an earlier one, and a single replacement piece may change your total resistances. If you are taking heavy damage, compare the protection you lose against the attack or stamina benefit you gain rather than assuming the lightest option is automatically superior.
Verified item example: Enhanced Feline chest armor
One reference listing for Enhanced Feline chest armor shows these displayed bonuses: +10% attack power, +6% resistance to piercing damage, +8% resistance to slashing damage, +8% resistance to monster damage, +30% resistance to elemental damage, and +10% stamina regeneration. These figures belong to that named item and tier; they are not a promise for every Feline piece. Confirm the version and the values on your own in-game item screen before using them in a build calculation.

Griffin: the Sign-oriented school
Griffin is aimed at witchers who spend heavily on Signs. Its appeal is the way a Sign-centered build can use armor bonuses without abandoning a complete Witcher set. Compare the exact Sign-related values on the piece you are considering, because baseline statistics and Grandmaster matching-piece effects are different categories.
A Griffin chest may be worthwhile even when another school displays a higher armor rating if the Griffin bonuses improve the Signs you cast most often. Conversely, a melee-heavy character may gain less from Griffin’s emphasis than from a set whose bonuses directly increase attack output or survivability.
Ursine (Bear): heavy protection with an offensive trade-off
Ursine is the defense-oriented, heavy-armor choice. It suits players who prefer to absorb more punishment, block or counter safely, and accept a less agile feel in exchange for protection. Heavy armor can be a poor fit for a build that depends on rapid stamina recovery or constant repositioning, so evaluate the entire combat loop rather than the chest’s armor number.
Use the exact resistances on each Ursine tier to decide whether it solves the damage type giving you trouble. A heavy school is not a guarantee of immunity, and a light school is not automatically fragile: the displayed resistances and your skills determine the result.

Wolven is presented as the most balanced of the four main schools. It is a practical choice for players who alternate between sword attacks, Signs, bombs, and defensive tools or who do not want their armor to dictate one narrow rotation.

- If you buy this game, you will receive a free next-gen update on December 14th!
- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
Balanced does not mean best in every slot. If a particular encounter demands maximum Sign output, Griffin may provide a better fit; if you need maximum protection, Ursine may be preferable; if speed and attack bonuses are the priority, Feline may win. Compare Wolven’s individual item bonuses with those alternatives at the same tier and level.
Manticore: a Blood and Wine set to investigate separately
Manticore is part of Blood and Wine and is obtained through that expansion’s diagram path. The available location reference confirms that its hunt is covered alongside Grandmaster gear, but the individual Manticore statistics and bonus wording are not established here. Read the item cards in your game before claiming a specific resistance, weight, or build effect.
Because the set is expansion content, a player with only the base game cannot craft it. Treat the Manticore hunt as a separate route from the four commonly discussed base-game school families, and make sure the diagram actually names the piece and tier you want.

How to find Witcher gear: the scavenger-hunt procedure
Locations vary by school and tier, so use the clue or map attached to the specific hunt instead of relying on a generic chest list. The reliable sequence is:
- Obtain a map, note, or quest clue. A merchant, quest reward, or discovered document can start a school hunt. Read the entry in your quest log so you know which school and tier it covers.
- Activate and track the scavenger hunt. Select the hunt as your tracked quest. The objective identifies the broad area and the type of evidence to inspect; it does not replace the diagram.
- Reach the marked site and search for the diagram. Explore the indicated ruin, cave, building, or other location and loot the container or body holding the diagram. If the objective remains incomplete, check nearby rooms and elevated or locked sections before leaving.
- Open the diagram in your inventory. Confirm the item name, school, slot, tier, and required level. This prevents collecting a Feline diagram when you intended Griffin, or crafting Basic equipment after targeting Mastercrafted.
- Gather materials and locate the right crafter. Armor diagrams require an armorer; sword diagrams require a swordsmith. The crafter’s available level matters for higher tiers, so visit a more capable professional when the recipe is unavailable.
- Craft and equip the item. Crafting consumes the listed components. Compare the finished item’s weight, armor, resistances, and bonuses with what you are wearing before dismantling or selling the old piece.
- Repeat for the next tier or slot. A complete set requires separate diagrams for its armor pieces and, where applicable, weapons. Upgrading one chest does not unlock the rest of the school automatically.
Grandmaster hunts follow the same diagram-to-crafter logic, but they are tied to Blood and Wine and can add matching-school bonuses. Keep the expansion requirement visible when planning a complete build.
How to choose a set for your build
Choose Feline when attack uptime matters most
Pick Feline if your damage comes from frequent attacks and movement and you can manage the lower-protection trade-off of a light-oriented profile. Verify stamina and resistance values on the exact tier you can craft.
Choose Griffin when Signs are your main damage or control tool
Griffin is the targeted option for Sign-heavy play. Check whether its displayed Sign bonuses improve the Signs and mutations you actually use, rather than assuming every Sign benefits equally.
Choose Ursine when surviving hits is the limiting factor
Ursine makes sense when incoming damage, stagger risk, or difficult close-range fights matter more than maximum mobility. Compare the stamina and movement implications with your skills and alchemy choices.
Choose Wolven when you switch tactics often
Wolven’s balanced profile fits a hybrid who does not want to rebuild around one damage source. It is also a sensible baseline for comparing a mixed set, provided you check the actual item bonuses before substituting pieces.
Choose Manticore only after checking the expansion item cards
Manticore requires Blood and Wine. Since the available reference does not establish its exact statistics here, decide from the bonuses shown on the diagrams and crafted pieces in your edition rather than from a generic reputation.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Ranking by armor rating alone: compare weight, resistances, attack or Sign effects, tier, and level together.
- Assuming all pieces share one stat line: inspect every slot; bonuses can differ between chest, gloves, trousers, and boots.
- Confusing a diagram with finished gear: the diagram is a recipe. You still need materials and the appropriate crafter.
- Expecting Grandmaster effects on ordinary gear: matching-school bonuses belong to Grandmaster gear from Blood and Wine.
- Tracking the wrong hunt: verify the school and tier in the quest title before traveling or buying materials.
- Ignoring level requirements: a diagram can be correct for your school but unusable until Geralt reaches the listed level.
- Using an unverified location list: rely on the active scavenger-hunt objectives and the diagram name; exact chests and coordinates differ by hunt and tier.
What to check before spending rare materials
- Confirm the school and slot on the diagram.
- Confirm whether it is Basic, Enhanced, Superior, Mastercrafted, or Grandmaster.
- Check Geralt’s level against the recipe requirement.
- Compare the complete bonus line with your current item, including resistances and stamina or Sign effects.
- Verify that you own Blood and Wine before planning Manticore or Grandmaster equipment.
- Make sure the required armorer or swordsmith can craft that tier.
Following those checks keeps the meaningful choice in view: match the set and tier to your build, then verify the exact item rather than trusting a school label or armor number.
