The so-called Heisenberg cubes were hand-size blocks of natural uranium made for Nazi Germany’s wartime reactor experiments. At Haigerloch, Werner Heisenberg’s team suspended hundreds of them in a heavy-water vessel, but the assembly never sustained a chain reaction. Their unfinished reactor—and the uncertain fate of most of the cubes—shows how far Germany remained from an atomic bomb in 1945.

What the “Heisenberg cubes” were

The cubes were roughly hand-size pieces of solid, natural uranium fabricated for German nuclear experiments during the Second World War. They were not finished bomb components and were not enriched uranium. Their intended job was to provide fuel in a reactor lattice, where a controlled chain reaction could produce useful scientific data and, potentially, plutonium.

At Haigerloch in southern Germany, Heisenberg’s group suspended hundreds of cubes from aircraft cable inside a vessel of heavy water. Heavy water slows neutrons, while the uranium supplies the fissionable material. The arrangement was an attempt to reach criticality—the point at which each generation of fissions sustains the next without outside help.

It failed. The Haigerloch assembly never achieved a self-sustaining chain reaction. That physical result is more revealing than later speculation about what German scientists might have intended: the program had not demonstrated a working reactor, much less a practical route to a bomb.

What happened to Hitler’s uranium cubes in 1945

In April 1945, the Allied Alsos mission reached Haigerloch and recovered 659 uranium cubes. Contemporary reporting documented that roughly 400 additional cubes were not recovered. The fate of most of the missing material—and of many cubes taken to the United States—has never been established. Some may have entered American enrichment work; others may have disappeared through postwar disposal or black-market channels. There is no authoritative complete inventory of surviving cubes.

Alsos also seized technical records and captured scientists. Ten German nuclear researchers, including Heisenberg and Kurt Diebner, were held under Operation Epsilon at Farm Hall in England from July 3, 1945, to January 3, 1946. Their conversations were secretly recorded. After Hiroshima, the scientists were visibly surprised and initially struggled to believe that the United States had built a bomb.

Heisenberg’s reaction, preserved in the Farm Hall transcript, was: “I don’t believe a word of the whole thing. They must have spent the whole of their ₤500,000,000 in separating isotopes; and then it’s possible.” The remark captures both the shock of Hiroshima and a mistaken assumption that an enormous isotope-separation effort was indispensable to the American result.

Why the cubes are evidence of failure, not a near-miss

The reactor never became critical

Forensic work on two surviving cubes associated with the German program found no significant neutron bombardment. Their measured characteristics and estimated dates—approximately 1940 to 1943—fit uranium that had not spent time inside a reactor operating at criticality. The result is consistent with the historical record that Haigerloch’s experiment never sustained a chain reaction.

Germany lacked the industrial steps needed for a bomb

German researchers told Armaments Minister Albert Speer in June 1942 that building an atomic bomb with available resources would take three to five years. The project was subsequently reduced or scrapped as a wartime priority. Germany never established a successful uranium-enrichment method, and plutonium did not become a practical substitute. Without either a reliable supply of fissile material or a functioning production reactor, the cubes could not be turned into a bomb program.

The causes were organizational as well as technical

Historians generally explain the failure through miscalculation, weak coordination and low priority rather than proven deliberate sabotage. Scientists pursued related work in separate groups, resources were limited, and the leadership did not sustain the industrial effort required for enrichment or large-scale reactor construction. Claims that an individual secretly sabotaged the project remain unproven.

Where surviving or suspected cubes are today

A small number of cubes can be traced to museums, university collections and nuclear-security laboratories. Their provenance is not equally strong, so “a Heisenberg cube” can mean a documented object, a probable German-war-program artifact or a specimen whose origin remains unresolved.

Location Provenance and scientific evidence Current access or use Interpretive value
Atomkeller Museum, Haigerloch A partly intact cube reportedly came from a Haigerloch colleague of Heisenberg and was donated in 2000. It is displayed behind 15-millimetre Plexiglas beside a reactor replica. Public museum display, subject to the museum’s opening arrangements. The clearest physical link to the Haigerloch experiment.
Mineralogical Museum, University of Bonn Received in 1954 from the Allied Military Security Board; it is probably one of the 659 cubes recovered at Haigerloch. Held by the university museum; exhibition status can vary. Illustrates the postwar Allied seizure and dispersal of the material.
Federal Office for Radiation Protection, Berlin Probably came from Diebner’s work at Gottow or Stadtilm. Forensic measurements place it, and the Atomkeller cube, at approximately 1940–1943 and show no significant neutron exposure. Government collection; not a routine public exhibit. Provides scientific evidence that the material was not irradiated in a critical reactor.
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Richland A suspected Heisenberg cube was shipped from the U.S. Department of Energy in the 1990s. A nondestructive age test in 2002 was inconclusive, so Nazi provenance is probable, not conclusive. Used as a packaged radioactive source in international border-security and nuclear-forensics training. Demonstrates how investigators teach the appearance and handling of nuclear material.
Smithsonian National Museum of American History In the collection since 1983 and not exhibited. Donor Merril Eisenbud wrote, “There should be no question about the authenticity.” Collection storage rather than regular public display. Shows how individual objects entered American institutional collections after the war.
Harvard University Science Center Brought to Cambridge in 1945 by Edwin Kemble, Alsos deputy science director. Occasionally used for demonstrations; access is controlled by the university. Connects the cubes to the Alsos scientific intelligence operation.

Were the cubes really used in a Nazi reactor?

They were made for, and in the Haigerloch case installed in, a Nazi German reactor experiment. That does not mean every surviving cube can be proven to have occupied the reactor vessel. The Haigerloch display has a reported personal chain of custody, the Bonn specimen is probably among the recovered 659, and the Berlin cube is linked instead to Diebner’s work. The Richland specimen remains a probable identification because its 2002 age test did not settle the question.

The safest distinction is between use in the German nuclear program and proof of a particular cube’s exact history. The first is well established; the second depends on records, provenance and measurements for each object.

Did Germany actually come close to an atomic bomb?

No. Germany had competent nuclear scientists and conducted genuine reactor research, but the available evidence places the program years and major industrial steps away from a weapon. The June 1942 estimate of three to five years assumed resources Germany did not commit. By the end of the war, there was no successful chain reaction, no uranium-enrichment capability and no practical plutonium route.

The cubes therefore matter as material evidence. They show an ambitious experiment that stopped before criticality, not a nearly completed bomb hidden in a cave. Their dispersal after 1945—and the uncertain provenance of several surviving examples—also explains why museum labels and popular stories sometimes sound more certain than the historical record allows.

What the Farm Hall record adds

Farm Hall provides a contemporary window into the scientists’ own understanding. The detainees’ surprise at Hiroshima indicates that they had overestimated the difficulty or scale of the American project and underestimated what could be achieved under wartime conditions. Their conversations do not prove that German scientists deliberately held back; they show confusion, incomplete information and the shock of learning the war had produced a weapon they had not expected.
