Yes, but only for a small, open-container demonstration or a limited drain-maintenance attempt. Vinegar and baking soda react immediately, producing carbon dioxide bubbles. That fizz is evidence of an acid–base reaction—not proof that the mixture is a superior cleaner. For normal cleaning, use vinegar and baking soda separately, choosing the one that matches the soil you need to remove. Never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach.
Why baking soda and vinegar fizz
Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, a mild base. Vinegar supplies acetic acid. When they meet, the atoms rearrange in a neutralization reaction:
acetic acid + sodium bicarbonate → sodium acetate + water + carbon dioxide

The American Chemical Society explains that the atoms are rearranged and that total mass is conserved. Bubbling continues only while both reactants are available; once one is used up, the fizz stops. This is the same limiting-reactant idea demonstrated in a Journal of Chemical Education balloon activity.

The reaction changes the ingredients into a sodium-acetate solution, water and carbon dioxide. In practical terms, the mixture no longer retains vinegar’s original acidity or baking soda’s original alkalinity. That is why a premixed bottle is usually a poor all-purpose cleaner: it has consumed the properties that made either ingredient useful.
Does the fizz actually clean?
It can loosen or agitate some debris while the bubbles form, but bubbling alone does not make the combination a powerful cleaner. Cleaning depends on the type of soil, contact time, temperature and mechanical action.

| Cleaning problem | More appropriate first choice | What it does | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mineral scale, hard-water deposits and some soap-scale residues | Vinegar used on its own | Acid can dissolve acid-soluble mineral deposits | Test an inconspicuous area; acids can damage some stone, grout, metals and finishes |
| Light soil, odors and gentle abrasive cleaning | Baking soda with water | Provides mild scrubbing and odor control | It is not a substitute for a disinfectant or a degreaser in every situation |
| Standing-water clog | Plunger, then a hand snake if needed | Uses mechanical force to move or retrieve the obstruction | Requires the correct tool and technique; chemical mixtures may not reach or remove the blockage |
| Greasy buildup | A suitable dish or household detergent | Surfactants lift and suspend grease | Follow the product label and rinse thoroughly |
If you use both ingredients on the same surface, use them sequentially rather than premixing them for storage. Apply the ingredient suited to the soil, rinse, then use the other only if it has a separate purpose.

When mixing them is reasonable
A small science demonstration
- Place a small amount of baking soda and vinegar in an open container with plenty of room for foaming.
- Keep faces and eyes away from the reaction and protect nearby surfaces from splashes.
- Supervise children throughout the demonstration.
- Leave the container open. Never cap it or transfer the active mixture to a sealed bottle.
The demonstration is useful precisely because the gas is visible. It should not be interpreted as a performance test showing that the combined liquid cleans better than either ingredient alone.

A cautious drain-maintenance attempt
University of Florida IFAS Extension describes a home recipe that combines baking soda, salt and white vinegar, followed by flushing. Poison Control notes that some accounts attribute limited movement of a clog to carbon-dioxide pressure. This may provide modest agitation in a slow drain, but it is not a reliable treatment for a serious blockage.
- Use the baking-soda-and-salt step from the published extension directions.
- Add white vinegar as directed, keeping the drain area ventilated and avoiding splashes.
- Allow the reaction to finish rather than sealing the opening.
- Flush as directed. If water remains standing or the drain is still slow, stop using chemical mixtures.
- Use a plunger or plumber’s snake for a persistent obstruction.
Do not use this recipe after a commercial drain opener has been used or while such product remains in standing water. Residual chemicals can react unpredictably and create a splash or exposure hazard.

Safety rules that matter
- Never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach. The combination can release dangerous toxic fumes.
- Do not pour baking soda and vinegar into a capped bottle, closed drain line or any other sealed vessel. Carbon dioxide generation can raise pressure.
- Follow labels, ventilate the area and keep children and pets away from splashes.
- Wear eye protection when a reaction could foam or spray.
- Check surface compatibility before applying vinegar, especially on natural stone, cement-based materials, delicate metals or unknown finishes.
- For a persistent clog, choose mechanical clearing or professional help instead of repeatedly adding chemicals.
A simple decision guide
Choose vinegar alone when
- The target is an acid-soluble mineral deposit.
- You can safely rinse the surface and the finish is compatible with mild acid.
Choose baking soda with water when
- You need gentle scrubbing.
- You are addressing light soil or odors and do not need a disinfectant claim.
Choose a plunger or snake when
- Water is standing in a sink, tub or shower.
- The obstruction is persistent, or a previous chemical opener may still be present.
What the reaction does—and does not—prove
The bubbles prove that acetic acid and sodium bicarbonate are reacting and releasing carbon dioxide. They do not prove that the surface is disinfected, that grease has been chemically dissolved, or that a blocked pipe has been cleared. Once the reaction is complete, most of the original acid and base have been consumed, leaving a solution whose cleaning behavior is different from either starting ingredient.
