No Street Fighter versus Mortal Kombat movie has been announced. The idea came up during press interviews for Street Fighter (2026), when cast members picked Mortal Kombat opponents for their characters. Their answers are enthusiastic dream matchups, not evidence that a crossover is in production. A reported change in corporate ownership could make licensing discussions easier, but studio approval, a workable story and the films’ very different tones would still be required.
What the cast actually said
During a ComicBook.com press day on October 8, 2026, actors from Street Fighter were asked which Mortal Kombat character their roles should fight. The answers were playful but specific:

None of those comments describes a script, casting deal, release date or greenlight. They are the kind of hypothetical matchups fans use to imagine how the two fighting-game universes might collide.

No. The available comments do not confirm a crossover film or even establish that one is being actively developed.
#1 Best Overall
Director Kitao Sakurai declined to confirm or deny a project of that nature, saying it was something the filmmakers would obviously like to do. That is an expression of interest, not an announcement. He also would not confirm a Street Fighter sequel, making a still-larger crossover an even more distant possibility.
Why shared ownership could remove one obstacle
The two film series were previously presented as competitors in a deliberately fictional promotional rivalry. ComicBook.com reported that Paramount and Warner Bros. were acquired and rebranded under Skydance, potentially placing the film rights under a common corporate umbrella. If that report is accurate, negotiating control would be simpler than arranging a deal between unrelated studios.
Common ownership does not automatically authorize a crossover. Executives would still need to approve the concept, agree on budgets and revenue allocation, clear character and branding rights, and decide which studio or production team would control the project. The ownership change makes a conversation more plausible; it does not mean a movie has been ordered.
The business case is encouraging, but not decisive
The recent Mortal Kombat films provide evidence that the property can support theatrical interest. Mortal Kombat II was reported to have earned $129.5 million worldwide against an $80 million budget. The first Mortal Kombat film earned $84 million worldwide against a $55 million budget.
Rank #3
- Shrink-wrapped
Street Fighter (2026) was reported for theatrical release on October 16, 2026. Its audience response and financial performance would be important data before a studio commits to combining the brands. A crossover would carry the cost and risk of a major event film, so executives would likely want both series to demonstrate sustained demand rather than rely only on interview enthusiasm.
The creative problem: two very different tones
Ludi Lin, who appears in the Mortal Kombat films, said a crossover would be possible and “so much fun,” but immediately warned that the movies are tonally very different. That distinction is central.
Rank #4
- Mortal Kombat: built around graphic martial-arts violence, fatalities and a mature identity.
- Street Fighter: generally presents its martial-arts fantasy through a different blend of action, spectacle and character humor.
A successful film would need a rating and visual style that do not make either franchise feel misrepresented. It could follow Mortal Kombat’s darker approach, adopt a more accessible adventure tone, or use a story device that separates worlds before bringing them together. Each choice would affect which characters appear, how violent the fights can be and which audience the film is intended to serve.

Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has separately said he would love to see a Street Fighter character appear in Mortal Kombat someday. He also argued that successful films from both franchises would demonstrate an audience for more movies.

That idea could arrive in a smaller form before a crossover film: a guest character in a game, promotional event or other licensed appearance. It would still require agreements, but it would not carry the cost or story burden of a theatrical team-up.

- Rights and control: determine which corporate entities can approve the characters, logos and film versions.
- Creative format: choose between a guest appearance, a sequel connection or a full crossover event.
- Rating and violence: establish how Mortal Kombat’s mature combat fits the presentation planned for Street Fighter.
- Character roster: select matchups that serve the plot rather than simply reproduce a fan poll.
- Audience evidence: evaluate the theatrical results and reception of Street Fighter (2026) alongside the Mortal Kombat films.
Where to start with the source material

The game offers the clearest current reference point for Mortal Kombat’s roster and combat identity. Platform editions and available content can change, so check the store listing for the system you use.
What happens next
The immediate milestone is the release and performance of Street Fighter (2026), followed by any official announcement from the studios. Until a production, cast or release plan is formally disclosed, the Guile-versus-Kano and other proposed fights remain entertaining possibilities rather than a confirmed movie.
