A fossil crocodilian from Egypt has been reassigned to a new genus after CT scans revealed skull anatomy that earlier researchers could not see. Its nearly complete skull is missing the tip of its long snout—a striking physical echo of the Great Sphinx of Giza, which was carved from limestone of the same geological formation. The resemblance is a coincidence, not evidence that the same event damaged both objects.

What the fossil is

The animal is now called Herugavialis cairensis, a Middle Eocene gavialoid that lived about 45 million years ago in what is now Egypt. Gavialoids are long-snouted, fish-eating crocodilians. The reassignment does not mean scientists discovered a previously unknown living species; it establishes a new genus for a fossil species that had been placed in the wrong genus for decades.

The holotype skull is held by the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart. Lorenz Müller described it in 1927, after the relevant fossils had been collected in the 1920s. For much of the intervening century, the specimens were treated as belonging to the living false gharial genus Tomistoma.

How a century-old museum fossil was reclassified

CT scanning exposed hidden anatomy

Paul M. J. Burke, Stephan N. F. Spiekman, Belal S. Salem, Sara Saber, Hesham M. Sallam and Philip D. Mannion examined several specimens with computed tomography. CT scanning lets researchers inspect internal structures and reconstruct parts of a damaged skull digitally, without cutting into the fossil.

The scans, combined with the visible bone, showed a raised ridge around the eyes and other cranial features that do not fit Tomistoma. Those differences support a separate genus, Herugavialis, and the formal combination Herugavialis cairensis.

The formal study

The findings appear in “Cranial anatomy of the Middle Eocene Egyptian crocodylian Herugavialis cairensis provides new insights into gavialoid diversity in the Mediterranean region,” by Burke and colleagues, published in Royal Society Open Science 13(10), article 261173 (2026), DOI 10.1098/rsos.261173.

Why the fossil is linked to the Sphinx

The skull came from Egypt’s Mokattam Formation, dated to approximately 45 million years ago. Limestone from that same formation was later used to carve the Great Sphinx of Giza. Both objects therefore share a geological source: one is a fossil preserved in the rock, while the other is a monument cut from it.

In the fossil, the end of the snout is missing. The Sphinx also lacks its nose. That visual parallel inspired the genus name. UCL Earth Sciences co-author Professor Philip Mannion said, “Given this coincidence, we decided to name the new crocodile after the Egyptian god Heru, who was possibly the inspiration for this monument.”

What the evidence does not show

No published evidence establishes that the same event broke the fossil’s snout and the Sphinx’s nose. The fossil was buried, preserved and later collected; the monument has its own long, uncertain damage history. The shared missing projection and shared limestone formation are the documented connection.

Herugavialis compared with living gavials

Animal Snout and feeding Geographic or geological range Evidence and status
Herugavialis cairensis Long-snouted gavialoid adapted for catching fish; detailed proportions and ridges are reconstructed from fossil skull anatomy. Middle Eocene Egypt, about 45 million years ago, in a shallow Mediterranean coastal setting. Known from fossils, including CT-imaged skulls; extinct.
Indian gharial Extremely narrow, elongated jaws specialized for fish. Living in parts of the Indian subcontinent. Living species; critically endangered.
False gharial Long snout and fish-eating ancestry, but a broader muzzle than the Indian gharial. Living in Southeast Asia. Living species; critically endangered; the fossil was formerly assigned to this genus.

Only two gavial species survive today—the Indian gharial and the false gharial—and both are critically endangered. Fossils show that their broader group once ranged across Africa, Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Caribbean. That history makes the Egyptian fossil important: it records a much wider past distribution than the two surviving species suggest.

What ancient Egypt’s coastal environment was like

During the Middle Eocene, the region that is now Egypt’s Mokattam Formation was part of a shallow Mediterranean marine environment. Multiple gavial species lived there, indicating that long-snouted crocodilians were diverse in the ancient Mediterranean rather than represented by a single lineage.

UCL’s account links crocodilian diversity to global temperature and sea level. It also reports that crocodiles disappeared from the Mediterranean after the basin dried when it was cut off from the Atlantic, approximately six million years ago. That event occurred tens of millions of years after Herugavialis lived.

Why the reassignment matters

  • It corrects a long-standing identification. A specimen described in 1927 can still yield new taxonomic information when modern imaging reveals anatomy hidden inside the bone.
  • It expands the fossil record of gavialoids. The animal adds evidence that gavials occupied the Mediterranean region and were not restricted to the areas where their descendants live today.
  • It separates analogy from causation. The Sphinx comparison makes the discovery memorable, but the scientific result rests on skull anatomy, geological context and comparative taxonomy.
  • It provides conservation context. The two surviving gavials are critically endangered, while the fossil record shows that their relatives once had a nearly global distribution.

The short answer to the main questions

What is the fossil crocodile found in the Sphinx stone?

It is Herugavialis cairensis, a 45-million-year-old gavialoid fossil from the Mokattam Formation, the same limestone formation later used for the Great Sphinx.

Why is it called Herugavialis?

The name combines “Heru,” an Egyptian deity possibly connected to the Sphinx’s inspiration, with “gavialis,” referring to its gavialoid relationships.

Did the same thing break both snouts?

There is no evidence for that. The matching damage is a coincidence involving a fossil skull and a monument made from the same formation.

How was the old identification changed?

Researchers used CT scans and comparative skull anatomy, including the ridge around the eyes, to show that the fossils do not belong in Tomistoma.
