Saturn’s moon Tethys will cross the planet’s bright disk late Friday, October 16, 2026, for observers in much of the United States. The transit begins at approximately 12:17 a.m. EDT on Saturday, October 17 (04:16 UTC), Tethys’ shadow appears shortly after 12:30 a.m. EDT (about 04:30 UTC), and the moon and shadow leave Saturn at about 2:25 a.m. EDT. Because of the midnight date boundary, those same events occur late on October 16 in Central, Mountain and Pacific time zones. The moon is a difficult visual target; planetary video or still imaging gives you the best chance of recording it.

When the Tethys transit happens

Two U.S. observing guides give the same approximate schedule for this event. Astrobitica’s event guide and Astronomy magazine’s October 2026 guide place the sequence as follows:

Event Eastern Daylight Time UTC Date in U.S. time zones
Tethys begins crossing Saturn About 12:17 a.m. EDT About 04:16 October 17 Eastern; still October 16 Central, Mountain and Pacific
Tethys’ shadow appears Shortly after 12:30 a.m. EDT About 04:30 Same date-boundary difference
Moon and shadow leave Saturn About 2:25 a.m. EDT Approximately 06:25 October 17 in all listed U.S. zones

These are approximate guide times, not a guarantee for every location. Check a local ephemeris or planetarium program for your exact position, and allow time to cool, align and focus the telescope before the transit starts. NASA’s 2026 SkyCal provides the calendar context, while an independent Saturn ephemeris lists the corresponding Tethys transit at 04:16 UTC on October 17 and the shadow at 04:30 UTC (Saturn ephemeris).

What you will see near Saturn

Saturn, rings and Titan

Saturn is listed at approximately magnitude 0.3 around midnight in the event guide. A telescope should show the planet’s disk and broad rings readily. Titan, about 1 arcminute southeast of Saturn in the guide’s reference view, is a much easier moon to identify than Tethys. If atmospheric seeing is unsteady, concentrate first on Saturn’s rings and Titan while waiting for steadier moments.

Tethys and its shadow

Tethys is approximately magnitude 10 when seen away from the planet. Against Saturn’s much brighter cloud tops, however, its small disk has very little contrast. The shadow is also subtle. Tethys, Dione and Rhea are all around 10th magnitude, but overlap with Saturn makes the featured moon especially demanding. Astronomy’s weekly guide says the moon and shadow are mainly targets for astroimagers using advanced video-capture methods. Alison Klesman, senior editor of Astronomy, writes that you will “likely require photography to catch the transit and shadow transit” because Tethys is so small and faint compared with Saturn’s disk (event guide; weekly sky guide).

Can you see Tethys without a camera?

You can try, but visual detection is substantially harder than seeing Saturn, its rings or Titan. A telescope with enough aperture and magnification to resolve Saturn’s rings is the minimum practical starting point. Even then, glare from the planet can hide a 10th-magnitude moon crossing the disk. The shadow does not automatically solve the problem: it is a low-contrast mark on a bright, detailed surface.

For a visual session, use the highest useful magnification that the atmosphere supports, keep Saturn sharply focused, and watch for brief intervals of steady seeing rather than expecting a continuously obvious dot. Do not treat a failure to see Tethys by eye as evidence that the transit did not occur.

Why imaging is the realistic approach

Planetary cameras and high-speed video can collect many frames during moments of good seeing. Selecting and stacking the sharpest frames can reveal low-contrast details that disappear to the eye. A still-camera sequence can also work, but a video workflow generally gives more opportunities to capture steady frames.

Approach What it does well Main limitation for this event
Visual observing Immediate view of Saturn’s rings, disk and Titan; simple setup Tethys and its shadow may blend into Saturn’s bright disk
Planetary video Many frames, selective stacking and better odds of recording the transit Requires tracking, focus, processing and enough camera sensitivity
Planetary still photography Can document the event with repeated exposures Fewer frames to choose from and greater sensitivity to seeing and focus

Success depends on local atmospheric seeing and transparency, Saturn’s altitude from your site, precise focus, telescope collimation, mount-tracking stability and appropriate capture settings. The published guides do not test or rank particular telescope or camera models, so equipment choice should be based on those characteristics rather than a named product.

A practical observing plan

  1. Confirm the local time. Convert the Eastern schedule to your time zone and account for the fact that the event begins after midnight. The 12:17 a.m. EDT start is October 17 in the Eastern zone but October 16 farther west.
  2. Set up before the start. Give the telescope and camera time to reach outdoor temperature. Verify tracking, focus and collimation before Saturn reaches the transit window.
  3. Center and focus on Saturn. Begin with the rings and disk, then use Titan as a nearby, easier reference point.
  4. Record a sequence. Use planetary video or repeated still exposures through the full interval, with enough frame rate and sensitivity to preserve faint detail without washing out Saturn’s disk.
  5. Monitor conditions. Pause or shorten captures when turbulence softens the rings. Transparency, wind and changing focus can alter results even during the same night.
  6. Review and stack. Keep the sharpest frames, align them on Saturn and compare sequences before, during and after the predicted crossing. A shadow should move with the expected geometry; a fixed artifact is more likely dust, processing noise or a camera defect.

Reference conditions for the published event guide

The event-specific guide uses a reference location near 40° north, 90° west. For that site, sunset is listed at 6:19 p.m., sunrise at 7:12 a.m., and the Moon is a 36% waxing crescent. Those values are location-specific and should not be treated as universal observing times or sky brightness. Saturn’s quoted magnitude of 0.3 and Tethys’ approximate magnitude of 10 likewise come from that guide’s 2026 event description.

Where Saturn will be in your sky

Saturn’s exact altitude and compass direction depend on your latitude, longitude, daylight-saving rules and observing time. Use a current sky chart or planetarium application set to your location, then search for Saturn and set the time around the local equivalent of 04:16–06:25 UTC. The guides establish the transit timing, but they do not provide one universal direction or altitude that applies to every reader.

What to expect on the night

The event is best approached as an imaging challenge rather than a guaranteed naked-eye or low-power visual sight. Saturn’s rings and Titan provide rewarding views even if Tethys remains hidden. If your recording shows a tiny moving feature or shadow only after stacking and comparison with the predicted times, that is consistent with the low contrast described by the observing guides; avoid interpreting a single noisy frame as proof.
