There is no single best talent build in The Sinking City 2. Choose talents that solve the problem costing you the most—health, healing items, ammunition, reload time, or missed weak-point shots—and favor effects you can trigger reliably. The recommendations below are starting points, not tested rankings: talent names and effects come from Nerd’s Chalk’s guide, while Frogwares describes scarce ammunition and talent synergies as part of the game’s survival-horror design.
How to choose talents for your next stretch
The sequel puts more weight on survival horror, exploration, and combat. Investigation remains optional, but can reward you with resources, shortcuts, and useful discoveries. Frogwares Game Director Alexander Gresko describes ammunition as scarce and monsters as tough, and says talents can work alongside weapon upgrades and weak-point damage. Those conditions make it more useful to build around your usual combat rhythm than to chase a universal tier list.
The cited talent guide describes a loadout of three regular talents and one special talent. Because many effects depend on a particular action or enemy type, a slot is most valuable when its condition matches what you normally do. Before choosing, ask:

- Do you wait for focused shots, or fire quickly while under pressure?
- Do you usually reload, swap weapons, dodge, or move in for melee?
- Can the enemies and distance in the next stretch trigger the talents you plan to equip?
The guide advises changing owned talents at safe rooms as the next stretch changes. Frogwares also describes monsters with different behaviors, so a combination that suits one encounter may be a poor fit for another.

Best starting talents by playstyle
These are guide-based starting directions, not independently tested performance claims. Use the limitation in each row to decide whether the listed effects suit your habits.
| Problem or playstyle | Starting direction | When it fits—and when it may not |
|---|---|---|
| Survival and recovery | Deathless Vigor and Unhallowed Salve; add Chitinbound against monsters or Carapace of the Damned against humanoids. Consider Potent Tincture if you carry healing items. | A forgiving route for unfamiliar or crowded fights. Too much defense can leave fewer slots for ammunition or offensive support. |
| Crafting ammunition | Alchemical Abundance; consider Opening Gambit for careful opening shots and Ruptured Core if you regularly spend ammunition breaking weak spots. | Most useful when crafting supplies much of your ammunition. It will not solve shortages caused mainly by missed shots. |
| Reloading or rotating weapons | Profane Reload for reload downtime; Gunslinger’s Trance and Instruments of Death for frequent weapon swaps and attacks after swapping. | Swap-related bonuses have little value if you mostly stick with one gun and reload it. |
| Patient weak-point shooting | Reticle Ritual if you wait until aim is fully focused, paired with Ruptured Core for destroying weak spots. | Wandering Bullet is an alternative for quicker, unfocused weak-point shots. Focus bonuses are a poor fit when enemies often force you to rush. |
| Close-range melee | Butcher’s Zeal and Inner Beast; Feral Surge for close-range creature damage; Strange Evasion for a safer counterattack after dodging. | Choose this route only when you can approach safely and actually use melee. It is a poor fit if you tend to reload rather than attack with an empty magazine. |
| Fighting with the flashlight off | Silent Hunter, with Opening Gambit and either Reticle Ritual or Wandering Bullet as supporting choices. | Best for players who can track movement and aim without illumination. The guide cautions that the damage bonus does not make Calvin undetectable. |
| High-risk offense | Vessel of Destruction, Crimson Threshold, and Pact of the Reaper; consider Vengeful Spirit as a backup. | Conditional damage and healing on kills come with greater vulnerability. This route is a poor fit if ordinary hits regularly interrupt kill chains. |
Which talents help most with ammunition?
Start with the cause of the shortage. If crafting is your main way of replenishing ammunition, Alchemical Abundance is the guide’s direct starting choice. If you conserve shots by taking careful opening aim, consider Opening Gambit. If you spend ammunition breaking enemy weak spots, Ruptured Core may support that tactic. These address different parts of the problem; none is a substitute for a build that matches how you actually shoot.
Which talents suit weak-point damage?
For deliberate shots, the guide pairs Reticle Ritual—when you wait for fully focused aim—with Ruptured Core for weak-spot destruction. If you take quicker shots before aim is fully focused, consider Wandering Bullet instead. Choose based on the shots you can land consistently, not just the bonus that sounds strongest.

When to change your build
Reassess at a safe room when a new stretch changes the threats or makes your usual triggers unreliable. A melee setup loses its appeal when enemies cannot be approached safely; swap bonuses add little if you have stopped rotating weapons; and focus-dependent shooting can falter when encounters keep you under pressure. Investigation can also provide resources, shortcuts, and other useful discoveries, so exploring may help with resource pressure without changing your combat talents. The PlayStation Blog’s discussion of the game also describes investigation as optional.

What the available evidence does—and does not—show
Frogwares’ Xbox Wire interview, published August 18, 2026, provides official context on resource scarcity, combat, talent synergies, and optional investigation. The named talent effects and build suggestions above are from Nerd’s Chalk’s guide, updated August 21, 2026, rather than an official talent reference. The PlayStation Blog announcement, published August 18, 2026, discusses optional investigation and confirms PS5 availability. These sources do not establish comparative damage rankings, build win rates, or independently tested results, so no talent combination can be called objectively best on that basis.
