The right Sims 3 crash fix depends on when the game fails and whether you use Windows or Mac. First identify the failure stage, then check the game’s requirements and graphics drivers. If it crashes while loading, test without custom content before removing files or changing settings.
Start by identifying where The Sims 3 crashes
Note whether the game closes before the launcher opens, after you press Play, while loading a save or world, or during a session. The timing helps you choose a useful test; a crash alone does not identify its cause.

- Record your operating system, game edition or launcher, installed expansions, and whether you use mods or other custom content.
- Note any recent game, driver, or system changes and whether the crash happens consistently.
Check system requirements and graphics drivers
EA recommends checking that your computer meets the requirements for the base game and the most recently installed expansion, and keeping graphics drivers up to date. EA’s published product page lists legacy minimums, including 1 GB RAM for Windows XP and 1.5 GB for Windows Vista or Windows 7. It also lists 7.1 GB of disk space plus 1 GB additional space for custom content and saved games, and a 128 MB video card with Pixel Shader 2.0 support.
These are EA’s published legacy requirements, not confirmation that those old operating systems remain supported by Microsoft or that meeting the minimums guarantees stable operation on a current computer. Compare your system with EA’s requirements for the latest expansion you have installed as well as the base game. See EA’s troubleshooting instructions for its driver guidance.

If play is slow or choppy, lower graphics settings
For performance problems, EA suggests reducing graphics detail and trying windowed mode. These are adjustments to test, not guaranteed cures for crashes.
- Open Options in the game, or press F5.
- Lower the Graphics details sliders and save the changes.
- Try windowed mode and see whether performance changes.
EA’s PC troubleshooting section also says to check whether Advanced Rendering is switched on. That setting is not presented as a universal crash fix.

If the game crashes while loading, test without custom content
EA warns that custom content can cause The Sims 3 to crash while loading. Disable it temporarily to find out whether it is involved; do not assume it is the cause before testing.
- Exit the game and restart the launcher.
- Open Installed Content and choose Run without custom content.
- Try to load the game. If it works, restore your content in small, controlled batches or one item at a time until the problem returns.
- Remove the item that reproduces the crash, then test again.

Mac-only checks: graphics switching and caches
EA’s page places the following advice under Mac troubleshooting. Do not use Mac Finder instructions as Windows steps.
Check graphics and energy settings
On some Macs with integrated and dedicated graphics, EA suggests selecting Higher Performance in Energy Saver options if available, and considering turning off automatic graphics switching. Availability and labels can vary by Mac and macOS version.

Clear named cache files when the symptoms fit
For problems associated with corrupted saves or custom content, EA names these cache files: CASPartCache.package, compositorCache.package, scriptCache.package, and simCompositorCache.package. It also says to remove the files in Thumbnails; the game recreates the named cache files. If the problem remains, EA suggests trying World Caches and removing custom content or mods after backing them up. Follow the Mac-specific directions on EA’s support page for the applicable locations and procedure. Back up relevant files before removal.

Persistent Windows crashes: collect evidence before changing more
If first-line checks do not explain a Windows crash, an EA Forums responder suggests using Reliability Monitor and testing with a clean Sims 3 user folder. This is community diagnostic advice, not an EA-guaranteed fix.

Inspect Reliability Monitor
- Open the Windows Run dialog.
- Enter
perfmon /reland press Enter. - Find the date and time of the crash, open the relevant event, and review its technical details.
Record what Windows reports rather than guessing at a cause. A forum responder describes this check in an EA Forums discussion.
Test with a clean game folder
The same responder suggests temporarily moving the Sims 3 folder out of Documents/Electronic Arts so the game can create a clean folder for testing. Keep the original folder intact and note where you moved it; it may contain saves and other user data. If the game behaves differently with a clean folder, that gives you evidence to investigate the original folder’s contents. Restore or selectively reintroduce backed-up data after the test.
