The r/sims2 subreddit now bans AI “vibe-coded” modifications and custom content. Moderators announced the prohibition on October 15, 2026, then clarified on October 17 that the scope covers all Sims 2 custom content made in that way. Repeatedly posting prohibited work can result in a subreddit ban.
What the new rule says
The initial moderator announcement described vibe-coded mods as low quality and said they were “no longer allowed.” It warned that regularly posting them would lead to a ban. The follow-up clarification removed any uncertainty about custom content, stating: “ALL AI VIBE CODED MODS ARE BANNED, This includes ALL CUSTOM CONTENT FOR THE SIMS 2.”

The policy targets work characterized by the moderators as AI vibe-coded. It does not publish a technical definition that separates minor AI assistance from predominantly AI-generated work, so the exact boundary remains a matter of moderator interpretation.

A separate requirement applies to major changes to the game. If a major-change mod was published after 2020, its creator must be the developer and must apply through modmail for verified Modder flair before promoting it under the subreddit’s rules.

What the application asks for
- The mod’s name.
- Where the mod can be found.
- How it was made.
- What artificial-intelligence tool was used, if any, and how it was used.
Mods published before 2020 are exempt from this major-change posting requirement. That exemption does not turn an AI vibe-coded project into permitted content; the broader ban still applies to prohibited AI-made work.
Promotion limits still apply
Even creators who meet the authorship and flair requirements face posting limits. Mod promotion is restricted to one promotional post at a time and no more than one promotion every seven days. These limits concern how often a project is promoted, not permission to publish content that falls under the AI vibe-coded ban.

What happens to screenshots and other assets
The October 17 clarification also discouraged heavily AI-edited screenshots. Moderators said such images may be removed. The announcement therefore reaches beyond downloadable files: promotional visuals can attract moderation when AI editing is extensive, although no quantitative threshold was provided.

How moderators will verify compliance
The subreddit announcements do not describe a detection tool, required proof format, audit procedure, or formal appeal process. They also do not explain how moderators will independently determine whether a creator wrote a mod, used AI for limited assistance, or relied primarily on generated code and assets.

Commenters have asked how authorship and AI use will be verified, but those comments are discussion rather than an official enforcement process. Until moderators publish more detail, creators should treat the flair application and any direct moderator request as the controlling practical guidance, and should not assume that supplying source code alone will settle a dispute.
What creators should do before posting
- Classify the project. Decide whether it is a major game-changing mod, ordinary gameplay modification, or custom content. The clarification expressly includes all custom content when it is AI vibe-coded.
- Check the publication date. A major-change project first published after 2020 needs the Modder-flair process; pre-2020 projects are exempt from that specific verification rule.
- Document authorship and tools. Keep a clear account of how the work was made and what AI, if any, contributed. The modmail application asks for those details.
- Apply through modmail when required. Do this before promoting a qualifying post rather than relying on an unverified claim of authorship.
- Plan promotion frequency. Do not run more than one promotion at a time or promote more than once per week.
- Review screenshots. Avoid heavily AI-edited images that may be removed under the clarification.
Privacy and security risks for networked mods
Independent safety guidance from Mod The Sims adds an important technical concern. Its “Usage of AI LLMs” rubric warns that a mod sending game data to an external service can create privacy and security risks that the site cannot review, verify, or control. Making source code available does not remove those risks.

That warning matters most for mods that connect to online APIs or transmit save, character, household, or other game information. Before installing any networked mod, readers should identify what data leaves the computer, which service receives it, whether the connection is necessary for the feature, and whether the service’s security and retention practices are known. The subreddit’s ban and Mod The Sims’ safety warning address different issues: one governs whether content may be posted, while the other concerns what the software may do to a player’s data.
What remains unsettled
- No published technical test identifies “vibe-coded” work.
- No standard evidence package or verification checklist has been announced.
- No formal appeal route has been documented.
- The distinction between limited AI assistance and predominantly AI-generated work is not defined in the announcements.
For now, enforcement can depend on moderator judgment. Creators who need certainty should ask the moderators through the subreddit’s stated modmail channel before posting, retain a transparent development record, and avoid presenting heavily AI-generated or edited material as ordinary human-made work.
