No VPN can be called the safest for everyone on the available evidence. Instead of trusting a “100% safe” claim or a no-logs badge, check what has been independently examined, how the service handles data and leaks, and whether those protections match your needs. These six checks help you judge the evidence without mistaking a provider’s claims for a universal safety ranking.
Why there is no universal “safest VPN”
A VPN can encrypt some network traffic between your device and the VPN server and mask your IP address from some sites. It does not make you anonymous, protect every account or device, or replace other security measures. CISA’s guidance on secure network access addresses organizational security, not a consumer VPN ranking, so it should not be read as proof that any consumer service is safest. CISA’s Zero Trust Maturity Model is one example of a broader security framework.
There is no neutral, comparable current test establishing a winner across audit scope, logging, kill-switch behavior, leak controls, app transparency, ownership, and jurisdiction. Compare evidence on the same criteria and platform; where it is not comparable, a checklist is more defensible than a ranked list.
Six checks to assess a VPN’s safety
1. Check what an independent audit actually covered
Look for the auditor, report date, publication status, and the exact systems and processes examined. An audit might cover a policy, selected apps, server infrastructure, or particular operating procedures; those are not interchangeable. A report supports claims only about its stated scope at the time it was conducted.

IVPN CEO Nick Pestell made the time limitation explicit in a June 19, 2026 company statement: “Audits are a snapshot in time: any VPN service receiving a ‘no-logs’ stamp from independent evaluators can update its systems and start collecting sensitive data the following day.” This is a company executive’s warning, not an independent study establishing how often providers change their practices.
2. Read the logging policy for specifics
Check what the provider says it collects, how long it retains it, and whether its policy addresses connection records, traffic, DNS requests, IP addresses, and diagnostic data. A “no logs” label alone does not tell you which categories are covered or how the claim was verified.
Separate a provider’s assurance from supporting evidence, such as a relevant audit or a legal case that tested a logging claim. Tom’s Guide notes that audits can miss issues and that a no-logging policy tested in court can be useful evidence; neither point proves that a particular VPN is safest. Tom’s Guide’s discussion of whether any VPN is 100% safe is editorial guidance, not a comparative safety test.

3. Verify kill-switch availability and behavior for your device
A kill switch is intended to block network traffic if the VPN tunnel drops, reducing the chance that traffic continues outside it. Confirm that the feature exists for your operating system and read how the provider says it behaves, including what happens during a connection failure. Feature descriptions are not a substitute for independent testing on your device.
Proton says its kill switch blocks traffic if its server connection is lost. That is the provider’s description, not an independently verified result for every device or configuration. Proton’s feature page describes its published VPN features.
4. Look for separate DNS, IP, and IPv6 leak safeguards
Check whether the provider explains how DNS requests are routed and how it handles IP and IPv6 exposure. These are distinct potential leak paths, and a general “leak protection” label may not explain which are addressed.

Proton says its DNS queries run through the encrypted tunnel. A 2025 report authored by NordVPN lists DNS, IP, WebRTC, and IPv6 leak checks among its test methods; that list is useful for understanding different failure modes, but the report is not a neutral comparison of providers. NordVPN’s 2025 testing-methodology report describes those checks.
5. Use open-source apps and published reports as inspection opportunities
Open-source app code and public audit reports give outsiders material to review. They do not, by themselves, establish that every server, backend control, or company practice is secure. Check which apps and components are open source and read the underlying audit report rather than extending a general transparency claim beyond its scope.
Proton says its apps are open source and that it publishes audit results. Treat these as Proton’s claims and consult the relevant reports for what was examined. Proton’s feature page describes its transparency and security features.

6. Put ownership and jurisdiction in context
Identify who owns and operates the service, where the company is based, and where its servers are physically located. These details can affect which laws apply, but a country label alone does not establish how a provider handles data or whether its systems are secure. Consider jurisdiction alongside the logging policy, technical design, and audit evidence.
Malwarebytes says it is US-based, that its Privacy VPN is powered by AzireVPN infrastructure, and that servers must comply with laws where they are physically located. This is the company’s description, not a country-based safety verdict. Malwarebytes Privacy VPN’s product page gives its account of the service and infrastructure.
How to interpret provider examples
Provider pages are useful for finding feature descriptions and links to reports, but they are not neutral comparisons. The examples below illustrate what to verify, not which service wins.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
- Proton VPN: Proton describes a no-logs policy, DNS leak protection, open-source apps, independent audits, supported protocols and encryption, and a kill switch. Verify specific claims against the relevant published audit and check that its scope matches the claim you are assessing. Proton’s feature page.
- DuckDuckGo VPN: Its help page says it partners with Securitum for periodic audits and links to a 2025–2026 no-log policy audit and a 2024 security audit. Read each report’s date and scope before drawing conclusions about what was examined. DuckDuckGo’s VPN help page.
- Malwarebytes Privacy VPN: Its product page says a 2026 independent audit covered infrastructure hardware and server-side software. The account is published by the provider; examine the underlying report before treating it as independently verified evidence beyond that described scope. Malwarebytes Privacy VPN’s product page.
Choose based on the risk you need to address
Before subscribing, write down what you want the VPN to help with—for example, reducing exposure on a network you do not trust or masking your IP from sites you visit. Then check whether the provider’s documented features address that risk on your operating system. A VPN is one part of a security setup; it does not secure accounts, remove malware, or guarantee anonymity.
- Match an audit’s scope to the claim: an infrastructure review does not automatically verify every app or logging procedure.
- Check the provider’s stated collection and retention practices rather than relying on a label.
- Confirm feature availability for your operating system, especially kill-switch and leak safeguards.
- Use ownership and server location as context, not as a shortcut to a safety ranking.
If the evidence is old, provider-authored, narrow in scope, or difficult to compare, treat that as a limit on what you can conclude—not proof of a failure or a guarantee of safety.
