There was an official PlayStation Counter-Strike—but it was Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) for PlayStation 3, not a game for the original PlayStation or an official PlayStation 2 port. Valve announced the PS3 release for August 21, 2012, with support for PlayStation Move, the Move sharp shooter, and keyboard and mouse. Whether the game can still be purchased or played online today is not established by the available official release information.
Which PlayStation got Counter-Strike?
The official console release at the center of this story was Counter-Strike: Global Offensive on PlayStation 3. Valve announced its arrival on the PlayStation Network on August 13, 2012, with a North American release date of August 21, 2012. Valve’s announcement on PlayStation.Blog is the primary source for the platform, date, controls, and modes.

That distinction matters because searches for “Counter-Strike PS2” can make it sound as if the series had an official PlayStation 2 edition. The PS2 project identified in the available sources is instead a community-made recreation or demake, marked pre-alpha by its creator—not an official retail port. The project page documents that prototype.
What made the PS3 version unusual?
It supported several kinds of controls
Valve’s announcement said the PS3 game supported PlayStation Move, the PlayStation Move sharp shooter, and keyboard and mouse. It also said matchmaking would take performance and input device into account. That is an unusual combination for a console shooter, but the announcement documents the planned release-era feature set; it does not establish that every input option or matchmaking feature remains usable today.

- Blu-ray player to give you pristine picture quality
- The best high-definition viewing experience available
It included more than classic gameplay
Alongside classic Counter-Strike gameplay, the PS3 announcement named Arms Race and Demolition as additional modes. These details make the release more than a simple label applied to the PC game: Valve presented it as a CS:GO edition with multiple control choices and distinct modes.
How did it fit into Counter-Strike’s history?
The PS3 release came long after the series began on PC. Valve’s CS:GO about page says the original Counter-Strike started as a mod in 1999. Valve’s Steam listing gives November 1, 2000 as the release date for the original standalone game, describing tactical team missions that include attacking sites and rescuing hostages. Valve’s Counter-Strike listing refers to that distinct release, not the later PS3 edition.
Rank #2
- New slimmer, lighter PS3 system, Wireless controller
- 320GB HDD for storing games, music, videos, and photos
- Streams thousands of movies and TV shows instantly from Netflix
- Built-in Blu-ray player with 3D capabilities. HDMI output for 1080p resolution.
In short, the platform history is easy to mix up: the original game’s roots and 2000 release were on PC, while the PlayStation release documented here was CS:GO for PS3 in 2012. PlayStation’s hardware timeline provides console history, but it does not establish a Counter-Strike release for the original PlayStation.
What did the PS3 game cost at launch?
Valve’s 2012 announcement listed a $14.99 price and a $11.99 PlayStation Plus pre-order price. Those are historical launch-era figures, not current prices or evidence that the game is available to buy now.

Can you still buy or play CS:GO on PS3?
The cited official announcement confirms the 2012 release plan, but it does not verify present-day PlayStation Store availability, resale options, or whether online services and matchmaking still function. The evidence available here therefore cannot support instructions for purchasing the PS3 version or promises that online play works today. Check current Sony or Valve information before relying on either.
