You can assemble a working PC with a Phillips #2 screwdriver, a clean uncarpeted workspace, and the hardware included with your components. The most useful extras are problem-solvers: a movable light for dark corners, organized screw storage, a magnetic driver for dropped fasteners, and a few non-marring reach and cleaning tools. The twelve items below are conveniences, not a checklist every builder must buy.
Intel’s official How to Build a Gaming PC guide establishes the baseline: Phillips #2 handles most assembly, while an M.2 screw may require Phillips #0. Intel also describes magnetic drivers, a compartmented organizer, focused lighting, and cable ties as helpful options. PCWorld contributor Jon Martindale’s September 15, 2026 feature adds twelve overlooked aids based on his stated two decades of building experience; it presents suggestions rather than a controlled ranking or performance test.
Start with the small kit you actually need
Before buying specialized accessories, put these essentials on the bench:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Phillips #2 screwdriver: the normal size for motherboard, power-supply, drive, and many case screws.
- Phillips #0 screwdriver: useful for the tiny screw that commonly secures an M.2 drive.
- Good lighting: a desk lamp, headlamp, phone flashlight, or other movable light lets you see headers and screw holes.
- A place for hardware: a magnetic tray, egg carton, tackle box, or other compartmented organizer keeps screws separated.
- ESD-conscious workspace: work on an uncarpeted surface, handle components by their edges, and follow the component maker’s handling directions. A wrist strap can help but is not a universal requirement.
- Cable restraint: ties, hook-and-loop straps, or twist ties are optional ways to keep wiring clear of fans.
Check your cooler instructions before opening thermal paste. Some coolers have paste pre-applied; others include a separate syringe, and the required application method varies by cooler and CPU maker.

Which overlooked tools solve real building problems?
The following tools are best understood by the problem they solve. Buy the ones that match your case, eyesight, workspace, and habits.
1. LED flashlight gloves for dark, awkward corners
Small LEDs mounted on the fingers point light exactly where your hands are working. They are useful when a graphics card blocks the case’s lower screws or when you are searching the floor for a fastener. Their limitation is narrow coverage: they illuminate your fingers’ direction, not the whole work area.
A headlamp keeps both hands free and lights wherever you look. A phone flashlight or desk lamp costs nothing if you already own one, but a phone occupies a hand or needs a safe place to stand. Choose the glove only when close, hands-free illumination is a recurring nuisance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →2. Needle-nose pliers—or a hemostat—for retrieval
Long, slim jaws can reach between a motherboard and case wall, under a power-supply shroud, or around a radiator when fingers cannot. They are particularly helpful for retrieving a screw without removing several installed parts.
Use light pressure and grip the screw head, not a component lead or exposed contact. A hemostat offers a similar narrow reach and locking grip. Neither tool should be used to lever against a PCB, bend a connector, or pull a latch that the manual says to release in another direction.
3. An extra-long magnetic screwdriver
A long shaft reaches recessed motherboard and case screws, while a magnetic tip helps hold a fastener during placement and retrieval. Intel states that magnetic screwdrivers help prevent screws from dropping inside the case and should not damage components when used appropriately.

The magnet does not replace the correct driver size: use Phillips #2 for most work and Phillips #0 where the M.2 screw requires it. Keep the tip controlled near spinning fans and delicate connectors, and stop if a screw begins to cross-thread.

Cases normally include the screws and standoffs you need, but a spare assortment can rescue a build when a standoff, washer, or replacement screw is missing. It is most useful for people who rebuild systems, modify cases, or maintain several machines.
Sort replacements by thread and length rather than assuming two similar-looking screws are interchangeable. An incorrect standoff can short a motherboard or prevent it from seating; install only the locations supported by the case and board manuals. Product quantities and prices vary by listing and date, so treat any example kit as a convenience rather than a standard specification.
5. A magnetic parts tray
A magnetic tray keeps steel screws from rolling away and lets you separate motherboard, drive, and case hardware. Intel also suggests a compartmented organizer; an egg carton or tackle box is a perfectly workable substitute when it is clean, stable, and clearly labeled.
Use one compartment per screw type and keep the tray outside the case while you work. A magnetic tray will not reliably hold every nonmagnetic fastener, plastic clip, or washer, so its value is organization rather than universal storage.

6. Plastic pry tools
Plastic picks and spudgers can press a PCIe slot release, lift a small clip, or help remove a motherboard coin-cell battery without the scratching risk of a metal screwdriver. They spread force over a wider, softer edge.

- 【Precision Screwdriver Set】 Small screwdriver set has 140 bits in multiple models, including Torx , Phillips, Pentalobe, Star, Triwing, Triangle Etc, covering most screwdriver models on the market. The 4 long bits can help you remove deeper screws. Some commonly used screwdriver bits are also equipped with 2-3 bits of the same model as backup.
- 【Unique Handle Design and CRV Material】 The screwdriver handle is made of TPR and PP materials, the cap is rotatable, and it adopts an extended tool bar design. The length of the tool bar can be adjusted, making it easy to reach deep for disassembly. Screwdriver bits are made of high-quality CRV steel, which is wear-resistant and has high hardness.
- 【Multifunctional Accessories】 Mini screwdriver set contains 12 accessories to meet various repair needs. The matching flexible shaft facilitates multi-angle disassembly and repair of electronic products. The magnetizer demagnetizer tool can increase or decrease the magnetism of the bit. The magnetic mat is used to absorb small screws to avoid loss. The 1/4‘’ to 4mm silver adapter provided is used for drill to adapt large and thick bits, which is not suitable for precision and small manual screwdriver bits. This toolkit also comes with a double-ended pry bar, triangular pick and suction cup for easy repairing.
- 【Practical Storage Box】 Each screwdriver bit is marked with a model number for easy identification and is placed in a magnetic storage slot. The accessory slot can store various accessories safely and securely. The box is made of ABS plastic and PP material, which is solid and durable, and the buckle is firm, which can protect each accessory well.
- 【Wide Range of Application】Applicable to iPhone/Samsung/Huawei and other cell phones; Mini/Air/Pro and Huawei/Honor and other tablet PCs; Macbook/Air/Pro; Kindle/Kindle Fire; Ring Visual Doorbell/Visual Doorbell 2/Pro/Elite; PS4/PS5/XOBX game consoles, as well as PC laptop computers, jewelry, toys, aeromodels, drones, remote-control cars, and some small household appliances such as coffee machines.
Read the motherboard or case manual first. A pry tool is not permission to force a stuck latch; find the release direction and support the surrounding board. Replace a tool when its edge becomes sharp, cracked, or contaminated with adhesive.
7. An anti-static mat
An anti-static mat gives you a defined work surface and can make component handling feel more controlled. It is an optional aid, not a guarantee that an assembly is protected from electrostatic discharge.
Follow the mat manufacturer’s grounding instructions, keep the area uncarpeted as Intel recommends, and handle boards by their edges. If you use a wrist strap, connect it exactly as its instructions specify. The important practice is controlled handling and a suitable workspace, not ownership of a particular mat.

8. A cordless air duster or vacuum
Reusable cordless equipment can be convenient for dusting a case between builds. The practical rule is to follow the fan and component maker’s cleaning instructions and prevent fans from spinning freely while air passes through them.
Do not treat a vacuum or duster as a universal substitute for careful cleaning. Keep the nozzle from contacting boards, avoid moisture, and use short, controlled bursts. A conventional canned-air product may already meet your occasional needs; a rechargeable tool makes more sense when you clean multiple systems regularly.
9. Sticky putty as a last-resort pickup aid
A small piece of removable putty can pick up a dropped light screw or brace a loose cable while you position it. This is an improvisation, not a standard PC-building supply.

Note: The package is made of PP material without carton and user manual.
- 【Practical Storage Box】Compartments are categorized for placement, each CRV precision bit is marked with a model number for easy identification, neatly dispensed for easy storage and searching. The box is sturdy and durable with strong clasps that protect each accessory well. The bits are mini (long 28mm, diameter 3.98mm) for precision work, not suitable for large screws.
- 【Wide Scope of Application】Suitable for iPhone/Samsung/Huawei and other cell phones; Mini/Air/Pro and Huawei/Honor and other laptops; Macbook/Air/Pro; Kindle/Kindle Fire; Ring Video Doorbell/ Video Doorbell 2/Pro/Elite; PS4/PS5/XOBX game console controllers and consoles, and PC laptops , watches, glasses, jewelry, toys, flight models, drones, cameras, RC cars, and some small appliances like coffee makers.
Use the smallest amount possible, keep it away from exposed contacts, sockets, fans, and heat sources, and remove every residue before closing the case. Never press tacky material onto a connector or leave it where vibration could move it into a fan.
10. Isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free microfiber cloth
When replacing a cooler, old thermal compound must be removed from the CPU heat spreader and cooler base. Intel specifies 90% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth for this job. Power the system down, let hot parts cool, and follow the CPU and cooler instructions for the cleaning area and drying time.
Do not assume extra paste is needed for a new installation. Many coolers arrive with paste pre-applied; others supply a tube. Buy or apply additional compound only when the cooler instructions call for it or when you are remounting after the original paste has been cleaned away.
11. Cable ties and a flush cutter
Ties bundle the 24-pin, CPU, GPU, storage, and front-panel leads so they do not obstruct fans or airflow. A flush cutter trims the tail close to the locking head, leaving a cleaner finish and fewer sharp protrusions.
Velcro straps and ordinary twist ties are reusable alternatives. Tighten only enough to hold the bundle: excessive force can deform insulation or stress a connector. Route cables through the case’s intended channels before trimming, and leave enough slack for side-panel removal and future upgrades.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems12. Double-sided and color-coded tape
Small pieces of suitable tape can secure a loose cable, mark a connector, or hold an RGB strip while you test its position. Color coding is useful during a rebuild when several visually identical leads must be traced.

Use tape rated for the surface and temperatures inside the case. Do not cover vents, heatsinks, connectors, labels needed for service, or any opening used for airflow. Remove adhesive carefully; residue is a reason to choose a different mounting method, not to add more layers.

A safe, efficient order for using these tools
- Prepare the bench: clear an uncarpeted surface, gather the manuals, and place lighting where it will not cast your own shadow.
- Stage hardware: open the case, identify the supplied standoffs and screws, and put each type in a labeled tray compartment.
- Install the motherboard and cooler: use the correct driver size, verify standoff locations, and follow the cooler’s thermal-paste instructions rather than adding compound automatically.
- Route difficult cables before access disappears: use a long driver or pliers for recessed fasteners, and use plastic tools only for the release tabs described by the manual.
- Control wiring: test that fans and panels can move, then bundle cables with ties, Velcro, or twist ties without touching fan blades.
- Inspect before power-on: retrieve loose screws, remove temporary putty or tape, confirm no tool is inside the case, and check that every connector is fully seated.
- Clean only when needed: if replacing a cooler, use 90% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth as directed; for dust, immobilize fans and use controlled air.
Common mistakes these accessories do not fix
- Wrong screw or missing standoff: stop and identify the thread and mounting position instead of forcing it.
- Cross-threading: back the screw out, realign the parts, and turn it gently by hand before tightening.
- Over-tightened cable ties: cut and replace them with looser restraints if insulation or connectors are under strain.
- Metal tool against a board: switch to a plastic pry tool where appropriate and support the board near the release point.
- Dusting with fans spinning: hold each fan still while cleaning, following its manufacturer’s instructions.
- Assuming a tool equals ESD protection: keep the workspace and handling practices correct; a mat or strap alone cannot guarantee safety.
- Applying unnecessary thermal paste: inspect whether the cooler already has compound and follow its installation guide.
What to buy first if your budget is limited
Prioritize the item that removes your most likely failure point. For a first build, a quality Phillips #2 and #0 set, a movable light, and a simple screw organizer deliver the broadest benefit. Add a magnetic long driver if your case has recessed fasteners or you frequently drop screws. Choose pliers or a plastic pry set when your case layout makes access difficult. Cleaning supplies, cable-finishing tools, anti-static accessories, and tape can wait until a specific maintenance or routing task justifies them.
None of the twelve recommendations has a published study showing a particular time saving or failure-rate reduction. Their value is practical: fewer interruptions, better visibility, cleaner organization, and less temptation to improvise with a damaging metal tool. Match the accessory to the task, keep the component manuals beside you, and do not mistake a convenience item for a requirement.

Do I need a magnetic screwdriver to build a PC?
No. A normal Phillips #2 screwdriver can complete most assembly. A magnetic tip is a convenience that helps hold and retrieve ferrous screws, especially in recessed locations; use Phillips #0 when the M.2 screw requires it.
What can I use to keep PC screws from getting lost?
Use a magnetic parts tray or any compartmented organizer. A clean egg carton or tackle box works when each screw type has its own labeled compartment.
Do I need extra thermal paste when building a PC?
Not necessarily. Check whether the cooler has paste pre-applied or includes a tube, then follow that cooler’s application instructions. Extra compound is mainly relevant when the original paste has been removed or the instructions require a new application.
How do I see inside a dark PC case while building?
Aim a movable desk lamp, headlamp, phone flashlight, or LED flashlight gloves at the work area. Broad lamps illuminate more of the case; finger lights are useful for close work where your hands block other lights.
