The original PC edition of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion received a substantial compatibility update on 15 October 2026. GOG updated Oblivion – Game of the Year Edition Deluxe to version 1.2.0416 GOG v3 through its GOG Preservation Program. This is the 2006 game with usability and modern-system fixes—not a patch for Oblivion Remastered.
What the 2026 Oblivion update changes
GOG’s official changelog describes the release as a new GOTY version with improved language coverage, controller support and modern Windows compatibility. The practical changes are:
- English, German, French, Italian and Spanish text and audio support.
- Support for modern controllers, including Sony DualSense and DualShock 4, Microsoft Xbox Series, Xbox One and Xbox 360 controllers, Nintendo Switch Pro, Amazon Luna, Google Stadia and NVIDIA Shield devices.
- Controller hotplugging, so a controller can be connected or disconnected while the game is running.
- A fix for task switching with
Alt+Tab. - A fix for a memory leak that occurred during controller rebinding.
- An optimized default controller button layout.
- Compatibility verification on Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Stability validation for the updated build.
The release identifier is important: owners looking for the new build should see 1.2.0416 GOG v3, rather than treating this as an unrelated graphics or content patch.

Why this is being described as an update 20 years later
Oblivion originally launched in 2006. The GOG update arrived on 15 October 2026, roughly two decades after the original release. The timing refers to the age of the original game, not to a new edition being developed for the anniversary.
#1 Best Overall
- Live Another Life in Another World - Create and play any character you can imagine, from the noble warrior to the sinister assassin to the wizened sorcerer.
- First-Person Melee and Magic - An all-new combat and magic system brings first person role-playing to a new level of intensity where you feel every blow.
- Radiant AI - This groundbreaking AI system gives Oblivion's characters full 24/7 schedules and the ability to make their own choices based on the world around them. Non-player characters eat, sleep, and complete goals all on their own.
- New Lands to Explore - In the Shivering Isles expansion, see a world created in Sheogorath's own image, one divided between Mania and Dementia and unlike anything you've experienced in Oblivion.
- Challenging New Foes - Battle the denizens of Shivering Isles, a land filled with hideous insects, Flesh Atronachs, skeletal Shambles, amphibeous Grummites, and many more.
The updated product is the original PC Game of the Year Edition Deluxe. Bethesda presents Oblivion Remastered as a separate modernization of the 2006 game, so the two products should not be confused when checking a store library or deciding which version to play.
Original GOG edition versus Oblivion Remastered
| Category | Original GOTY Edition Deluxe on GOG | Oblivion Remastered |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | The original 2006 PC game and its GOTY Deluxe content, updated for current use | A separate modernized product based on the 2006 game |
| 2026 change described here | Version 1.2.0416 GOG v3 | Not covered by this GOG update |
| Main focus | Compatibility, controllers, languages, task switching and stability | Modernization of the game itself |
| Windows support noted in the release | Compatibility verified for Windows 10 and Windows 11 | Not established by this release announcement |
| Distribution and preservation | DRM-free GOG edition in the GOG Preservation Program | A separate product with its own release and support details |
Choose the original edition if you want the classic presentation and the preservation-focused build. Choose the remaster only if you specifically want the separate modernized version; installing or updating the GOG original will not turn it into the remaster.

What the controller changes mean on a modern PC
The update expands the original game’s usable input hardware beyond the controllers common in 2006. DualSense, DualShock 4, Xbox Series, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Switch Pro, Luna, Stadia and Shield devices are explicitly listed in the changelog. Hotplugging is also supported, removing the need to start the game with the controller already attached in order to switch from keyboard and mouse.
The optimized default layout should reduce initial setup work. If you customize controls, the rebinding memory-leak fix addresses a problem associated with repeatedly changing assignments. The release does not claim a new graphics renderer, new quests, or a redesigned gamepad interface beyond the stated layout optimization.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 status
GOG says it verified the updated edition’s compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11 and validated its stability. That is a compatibility commitment for this GOG build, not a guarantee that every mod, overlay, driver or third-party utility will behave identically. Modded installations can introduce their own conflicts, so troubleshooting should distinguish a clean, updated game from a heavily customized setup.
How the Preservation Program fits in
GOG added the Oblivion Game of the Year Edition Deluxe to its GOG Preservation Program. GOG describes the program as an official designation for classic games it has improved and intends to maintain for compatibility with modern systems. The product page identifies this edition as DRM-free, Windows-supported and maintained for current systems.

- Take-Two 31008 Elder Scrolls IV V2 PC
That makes the release more than a one-off controller patch: it is a statement that GOG will keep this particular distribution usable as operating systems and hardware change. It does not mean the original game has been remade or that every community mod will receive maintenance.
What players should check
- Confirm that the installed product is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion – Game of the Year Edition Deluxe on GOG, not Oblivion Remastered.
- Check that the installed build is identified as version 1.2.0416 GOG v3.
- For controller play, connect a supported device and test hotplugging and the default layout before changing bindings.
- If you use
Alt+Tab, test task switching in a clean session before adding overlays or extensive mods. - If rebinding appears unstable, make sure the game has updated to the new build before investigating external software.
Why this release matters
The update targets the friction that often keeps older PC games from remaining playable: outdated input support, poor task switching, memory-management issues and uncertainty about current Windows versions. It preserves the original game rather than replacing it, giving longtime players a maintained way to return to the 2006 edition while making it easier for new players to run on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
