Watch The NeverEnding Story films in release order: The NeverEnding Story (1984), The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (commonly labeled 1990; released in the United States in 1991), then The NeverEnding Story III (commonly labeled 1994; released in the United States in 1996). That sequence follows how the screen stories were made and is the least confusing way to see the changing relationship with Michael Ende’s novel.
The NeverEnding Story movies in order
There are three released films in the series covered by this guide. A first-time viewer should use the order below rather than trying to rearrange the films by their differing year labels.
| Viewing order | Film | Common franchise year | United States release date | Director | Relationship to Michael Ende’s novel |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The NeverEnding Story | 1984 | July 20, 1984 | Wolfgang Petersen | Adapts the first half of the 1979 novel |
| 2 | The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter | 1990 | February 8, 1991 | George T. Miller | Uses the latter half of the novel as a rough basis |
| 3 | The NeverEnding Story III | 1994 | April 2, 1996 | Peter MacDonald | Original story rather than a novel adaptation |
The two dates shown for each sequel are not a contradiction. Reference listings commonly identify the second and third films as 1990 and 1994, while the United States theatrical dates are 1991 and 1996. A streaming or retail page may therefore display a different year from a franchise list. When you search for a sequel, use the title as well as the year.
Why release order is the best first-viewing order
The films do not form a complete, faithful, scene-by-scene adaptation of the book. The first movie takes the first half of Ende’s 1979 novel, the second draws only loosely from the latter half, and the third abandons the novel’s source material for an original plot. Release order lets you see that progression without treating later films as if they were missing chapters in a single continuous adaptation.

The first movie establishes the screen version of the story. The sequel follows that film’s interpretation while drawing on material associated with the back half of the book. The third is a further screen continuation, not a translation of an additional section of Ende’s novel. Watching in production order makes the shift in adaptation approach understandable instead of making it look like a chronological inconsistency.
There is no evidence of a competing “correct” order that improves on release sequence. A reverse order would expose the original story before its setup, and a book-based order would imply a level of fidelity the films do not have. For a first viewing, begin with the 1984 film and continue through the two sequels.
How the three films differ
The trilogy is easiest to understand as a progression in adaptation strategy. The 1984 film is the foundational screen version: Bastian finds a book, enters its world through reading, and the audience learns the rules of Fantasia alongside him. Its connection to Ende’s novel is substantial but limited to the book’s first half.

The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter remains connected to that screen continuity, yet its relationship with the novel is deliberately looser. It takes ideas and material associated with the latter half of the book as a rough basis rather than reproducing that section literally. The sequel therefore works best after the first movie, not as an independent attempt to film the rest of the novel.
The NeverEnding Story III moves furthest from the book. Peter MacDonald’s film has an original plot, so there is no unfilmed “third section” of Ende’s novel that it represents. It is still the third released movie and belongs last in a series marathon, but readers comparing page to screen should treat it as a separate screen continuation.
1. The NeverEnding Story (1984)
Wolfgang Petersen directed and co-wrote the first film with Herman Weigel. Its central screen premise is that Bastian discovers Fantasia through a book and becomes part of the story as he reads. That “story within a story” structure is one of the film’s defining ideas; a BAFTA screening handout reproduces Roger Ebert’s brief observation from The Chicago Sun-Times dated January 1, 1984: “The idea of a story within a story is one of the nice touches in The NeverEnding Story.”
What the first film adapts
The 1984 movie adapts the first half of Ende’s 1979 novel. That qualification matters if you are approaching the films after reading the book: the movie is not intended to cover the novel from beginning to end. Its ending should be understood as the end of the film’s chosen portion of the source rather than proof that the entire novel has been filmed.
The adaptation also explains why the first film is the essential starting point even if you plan to watch only one entry. It introduces Bastian’s discovery of the book, the imagined world of Fantasia, and the device that connects the reader to the events inside the story. The two sequels assume that screen foundation rather than restarting the premise.

Runtime differences are edition differences, not a viewing-order problem
Published runtimes for the first film vary. A series reference lists 94 minutes, while BAFTA’s screening handout lists 102 minutes. Those figures may represent different cuts, restoration materials, or listing conventions; the available records do not establish that one number is universally “correct.” Check the runtime attached to the exact disc, broadcast, or storefront listing you are using.
If two listings show different lengths, compare the edition descriptions before assuming that content is missing. A longer runtime can reflect an extended version, while a shorter listing may identify a theatrical cut or use a rounded catalog value. The title and year alone do not identify the exact edit.
Documented home-video and collector editions
A film reference reports that a 4K release of the German international cut appeared in Germany in July 2021. It also reports an Australian 40th-anniversary five-disc deluxe edition released in December 2024. That set includes the original United States theatrical version restored from the original negative, the extended German version, and the feature-length documentary Life After Neverending Story.

Those details describe the contents reported for that particular Australian edition; they do not establish current stock, seller reliability, pricing, or compatibility with every player. Before buying an imported disc, verify the territory or region format, the listed cuts, subtitle and audio options, and whether the seller is offering the five-disc set rather than a different release. The edition concerns the original film only and should not be treated as a three-film collection.
For a normal first viewing, the practical choice is simply the version you can access legally in your territory. Collectors have more to compare: the German international cut, the original U.S. theatrical version, and the documentary are different reasons to choose a disc. Record which cut you watched if you are comparing reviews or discussing a particular scene, because a 94-minute listing and a 102-minute listing may not describe identical edits.
2. The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter
George T. Miller directed the second film. It is commonly labeled a 1990 release in franchise references, but its United States release date is February 8, 1991. Apple TV’s current United States listing uses 1991 and gives a runtime of 1 hour 29 minutes. A series reference lists the runtime as 90 minutes. As with the first film, the small difference is best handled as a catalog or cut distinction rather than as evidence that viewers are looking at different stories.
Why you may see “1990” or “1991”
Use “1990” when you are following the common franchise-year convention used in cast and series tables. Use “February 8, 1991” when you are describing the United States release specifically. A concise identification that covers both conventions is: “The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1990; U.S. release, 1991).” That wording prevents a reader from mistaking the sequel for a separate film when a database uses the other year.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow closely is it based on the second half of the book?
The sequel is not a direct filming of the novel’s second half. The available descriptions characterize it as using that latter portion as a rough basis. “Rough basis” is the useful expectation-setting phrase: the film belongs after the 1984 adaptation in the screen series, but it should not be used as a substitute for reading the second half of Ende’s book.

For that reason, read the novel and watch the sequel as related versions rather than as interchangeable chapters. The first movie’s adaptation choices shape the sequel’s screen continuity, while the book remains a separate work with its own structure and details.
3. The NeverEnding Story III
Peter MacDonald directed the third film. Reference listings commonly identify it as a 1994 film, while the United States release date is April 2, 1996. Unlike the first two entries, the third film has an original plot rather than adapting a portion of Ende’s novel.
What “original plot” means for the viewing order
The third movie is still the third released entry, so it belongs after the first two for a series viewing. However, there is no corresponding “third part” of the novel to locate. If you are watching to compare the films with Ende’s book, stop treating the book as a map once you reach this entry: the film’s story was created for the screen.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →This source distinction is also why a book-first ordering does not solve the year confusion. The first film adapts the novel’s opening half, the second only loosely follows later material, and the third no longer has a novel section to match. Release order remains the clearest organizing principle.
Why the sequel years differ by source
Readers often encounter a three-year sequence written as 1984, 1990, and 1994. Those are the common franchise labels used by reference tables. United States release dates tell a different, geography-specific story: July 20, 1984; February 8, 1991; and April 2, 1996.
| Film | Year commonly shown in franchise references | United States date cited for release | How to write it clearly |
|---|---|---|---|
| The NeverEnding Story | 1984 | July 20, 1984 | 1984 |
| The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter | 1990 | February 8, 1991 | 1990; U.S. release, 1991 |
| The NeverEnding Story III | 1994 | April 2, 1996 | 1994; U.S. release, 1996 |
Do not mix a territory-specific date into a table that otherwise uses franchise labels without a note. If your watchlist requires one year per title, the conventional sequence is 1984, 1990, 1994. If the list is intended to document United States theatrical releases, use 1984, 1991, 1996 and label the geography.
The discrepancy is especially easy to encounter when moving between an encyclopedia-style filmography and a storefront listing. A catalog may use the year associated with an earlier territory, while a U.S. service may date the title by its American release. Neither year changes the film’s position in the order. Search by the complete title, then confirm the territory and runtime shown on the specific listing.

- The NeverEnding Story (1984)
- The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (commonly labeled 1990; United States release in 1991)
- The NeverEnding Story III (commonly labeled 1994; United States release in 1996)
Different editions and release dates do not create additional movies. A longer or shorter runtime for the first film identifies a different cut or listing convention, not a fourth entry. Likewise, the documentary included in the reported Australian deluxe set is an extra feature, not another sequel.
Is another adaptation planned?
A 2024 report said Michael Ende Productions, in association with See-Saw Films, announced plans for a series of films based on the book. That announcement does not establish that production is underway, provide a release date, or confirm how many films will eventually be made. Until those details are formally established, treat the three films above as the released screen series and do not add an unreleased project to a watch order.

- Record the runtime shown by your disc or storefront, because listings for the first film range from 94 to 102 minutes.
- Continue with The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter. If your service labels it 1990 or 1991, confirm that the full title matches.
- Watch The NeverEnding Story III last. Expect an original screen story rather than another section of the novel.
- If you are comparing the movies with the book, note where the first film’s first-half adaptation ends and where the second film’s loose use of later material diverges. Do not expect the third film to correspond to a book chapter.
For a group watch, agree on the edition before starting the first film. That avoids a discussion in which one viewer has seen a 94-minute listing and another has seen a 102-minute version. For a book club, read Ende’s novel independently of the films or identify which half you are discussing; the second movie’s rough use of later material is not a page-for-page continuation.

Putting the films in numerical year order without checking the convention
A list that shows 1984, 1991, and 1996 is using United States release dates; a list that shows 1984, 1990, and 1994 is using common franchise labels. Both can identify the same three films when the geography or convention is clear.
Assuming the sequels complete a faithful adaptation
The first film covers the novel’s first half, the second uses the latter half only roughly, and the third is original. Calling the trilogy a complete sequential adaptation gives the wrong expectation for both the book reader and the film-only viewer.
Treating runtime listings as a contradiction
The documented figures are 94 and 102 minutes for the first film, and 90 minutes or 1 hour 29 minutes for the second, depending on the listing. Check the edition and source before concluding that a disc is defective or incomplete.

Adding an announced project to the released order
The 2024 announcement involving Michael Ende Productions and See-Saw Films describes plans, not a released film with a confirmed date. Keep that project separate from the three completed entries until production and release details are established.
Bottom line
For the clearest first viewing, watch The NeverEnding Story (1984), The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1990; U.S. release, 1991), and The NeverEnding Story III (1994; U.S. release, 1996). The first adapts the novel’s opening half, the second only loosely draws from later material, and the third is an original story. Check the territory and exact edition whenever a listing shows a different year or runtime.
Frequently Asked Questions
What order should I watch The NeverEnding Story movies in?
Watch them in release order: The NeverEnding Story (1984), The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (commonly labeled 1990; U.S. release February 8, 1991), and The NeverEnding Story III (commonly labeled 1994; U.S. release April 2, 1996).
How many The NeverEnding Story movies are there?
