Insured events and included extras
The Mutual Bank lists cover for events including theft and vandalism, fire (including bushfire), flood and rainwater run-off, storm and storm surge, and tsunami. The exact terms, exclusions, limits and any optional benefits depend on the policy wording and cover selected.

Renters’ liability and temporary accommodation
CHOICE lists legal liability cover of up to $20 million for covered incidents in Australia involving the people specified by the policy. This is a limit for qualifying claims, not cover for every kind of liability.

If a covered event makes the home unfit to live in, the bank says temporary accommodation can include reasonable extra rent. CHOICE lists a maximum of 24 months or 20% of the sum insured, and includes additional living expenses and removal and storage costs in this benefit. The actual entitlement depends on the policy’s conditions.

Food spoilage, portable belongings and valuables
- Spoiled food and prescription medication: CHOICE lists up to $2,000 under Plus. It says no excess applies when a claim relates only to spoilage; damage to the refrigerator or freezer itself is excluded from this benefit.
- Portable contents: this is an optional benefit for certain belongings away from home. CHOICE lists up to $10,000 per item for unlisted portable contents, subject to an overall rest-of-world limit, a $250 excess, and applicable limits and exclusions. The bank says limits differ outside Australia and New Zealand.
- Jewellery, artworks and collections: CHOICE lists a limit of up to $2,500 overall for each of these ordinary contents categories. The bank says valuable contents can be optionally listed for greater protection. Check the schedule and wording for any item you intend to name.

- Theft by the insured, family members, residents or people allowed to enter is excluded in the circumstances specified by the policy.
- Water escaping from shower recesses or shower bases is listed as excluded, as are the item that caused a leak and the item from which liquid escaped.
- Some animal damage is excluded. Sporting equipment, musical instruments and firearms are excluded from accidental-damage cover while in use.
- If the home will be unoccupied for more than 60 days, CHOICE says the insurer must be notified and specified precautions followed.
- Pet cover is listed as not covered.
The bank says damage caused by the sea’s action, such as tides and waves, is not covered. The full conditions and precise wording matter; check the current policy documents and your certificate, rather than relying on a short product summary. Is it good value?
The available public evidence does not support calling this policy cheap, expensive or good value. CHOICE says the insurer does not share price data for the product, and the accessible comparison content does not show its member-only price, cover or customer-satisfaction scores. Its assessment therefore supports a cover-focused review, not a price verdict.
To compare it fairly with another renters policy, use the same address, sum insured, excess and optional benefits when requesting quotes. Then check:
- whether the sum insured is enough to replace your belongings;
- whether accidental damage, portable contents and valuable contents are included or cost extra;
- the waiting periods and exclusions that matter to your situation;
- the liability and temporary accommodation limits; and
- the premium for that like-for-like cover.
