There is no single continuous timeline for every film called The Mummy. The movies divide into separate branches: Universal’s 1932 Imhotep story and its 1940s Kharis cycle; Hammer’s 1959 Kharis interpretation and sequels; the Brendan Fraser adventure trilogy from 1999 to 2008, plus its The Scorpion King spin-offs; and Universal’s unrelated 2017 reboot.
That means you do not need to watch every Mummy film in release order. Choose the branch you want, then follow its internal order. The Fraser films are the simplest sequence, while the classic Universal and Hammer movies are best treated as their own historical series.
Are all The Mummy movies connected?
No. The shared title refers to several independent continuities made in different eras and styles. Some films reuse names, Egyptian mythology or the idea of an awakened mummy, but that does not make them chapters in one story.

| Universal reboot, 2017 | Princess Ahmanet | Modern supernatural action | Standalone reboot; it does not continue Rick O’Connell’s story | The Mummy (2017) |
So a reference to “the Mummy timeline” is incomplete unless it identifies which branch is meant.

What happens in The Mummy (1932)?
Imhotep and the Scroll of Thoth
The 1932 film follows British archaeologists who uncover the 3,700-year-old mummy of Imhotep, an Egyptian priest played by Boris Karloff. Imhotep is revived after the Scroll of Thoth is read. The film’s horror comes from an ancient figure returning to the modern world and pursuing a supernatural purpose, rather than from the fast-moving archaeological adventure associated with the 1999 film.
IMDb’s 1932 FAQ identifies the movie as the source later reinterpreted in 1959, 1999 and 2017. Those later productions do not form a direct chain of events with Karloff’s film; they borrow or reshape its basic mummy premise.
The 1940s Kharis cycle
Universal followed the Imhotep film with a run centered on Kharis, a different mummified figure. The cycle is commonly encountered as a six-film collection sold by Universal Pictures At Home in its Complete Legacy Collection:

- The Mummy’s Tomb
- The Mummy’s Ghost
- The Mummy’s Curse
- Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy
The collection contains six films, but the first title is the 1932 Imhotep movie and the remaining entries represent the later Kharis-era material. If you want the classic Universal experience, begin with the 1932 film and then continue through the Kharis titles in their release order. Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy shifts toward comedy, so it works as the lightest endpoint of the collection rather than as a tonal match for Karloff’s gothic original.
What is the 1959 Hammer version?
A new Kharis interpretation
Hammer’s The Mummy (1959) stars Christopher Lee as Kharis, a mummified high priest. It draws on Universal’s earlier mummy films but is not a missing chapter from the 1932 or 1940s continuity. Hammer rebuilt the material in its own production style, with its own interpretation of the character and story.

This distinction matters because “Kharis” does not automatically identify one continuous version. Universal’s Kharis cycle and Hammer’s 1959 Kharis are related through source material and genre tradition, not through a shared on-screen timeline.
Hammer follow-ups
After the 1959 film, Hammer released three later mummy-related titles identified in the film’s FAQ:
- The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb (1964)
- The Mummy’s Shroud (1967)
- Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb (1971)
For a Hammer-focused viewing, start with the 1959 film and then watch these follow-ups in release order. They belong to Hammer’s broader mummy line, not to the Brendan Fraser trilogy or the 2017 reboot.
What is the correct order for the Brendan Fraser movies?
The 1999–2008 adventure branch has three direct films. Watch them in this order:
- The Mummy (1999) — the starting point and a loose remake of the 1932 concept.
- The Mummy Returns (2001) — the direct sequel.
- The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) — the third film in the trilogy.
This is a release-order sequence and the intended narrative progression for the Fraser story. It is also the most straightforward answer when someone asks for “the Mummy movies in order” but means the modern adventure films.

How this branch differs from 1932
The 1999 movie is described as a loose remake of the 1932 film, not a scene-for-scene recreation. It keeps the broad idea of an ancient mummy returning and threatening the living, but changes the tone to action adventure and establishes different characters, set pieces and continuity. The two movies can be compared as interpretations of one premise without treating their events as connected.
What changes in the third film?
Tomb of the Dragon Emperor expands the trilogy beyond the earlier Egyptian setting to a new supernatural conflict. Its placement is still unambiguous: it follows The Mummy Returns and closes the three-film Fraser sequence listed above.
Is The Scorpion King part of The Mummy?
Yes, but as a spin-off branch rather than as a fourth Fraser Mummy film. The Scorpion King (2002) grew out of The Mummy Returns and launched its own series.
Scorpion King film order
After the 2002 spin-off, the series continued with:
- The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior (2008)
- The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption (2012)
- The Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power (2015)
- Scorpion King: Book of Souls (2018)
These movies are best understood as an adjacent franchise. You can watch the Fraser trilogy without seeing any Scorpion King film, and you can explore the spin-off line after The Mummy Returns if you want the connected mythology that inspired it.

What is the 2017 The Mummy reboot about?
Princess Ahmanet in the present day
The 2017 film is a standalone reboot starring Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, Courtney B. Vance, Marwan Kenzari and Russell Crowe. Alex Kurtzman directed it.
Universal’s official synopsis describes “an ancient princess” who is awakened in the present day after being safely entombed beneath the desert, bringing malevolence accumulated over millennia and terrors beyond ordinary human comprehension. The mummy is Princess Ahmanet, played by Sofia Boutella, and the modern protagonist is Nick Morton, played by Tom Cruise.
Nothing in the film’s premise continues Rick O’Connell’s story from the Fraser movies. The characters, mythology and setup are new relative to that trilogy, so the 2017 movie should be watched as a separate reboot, not as The Mummy 4.
Who are Imhotep, Kharis and Ahmanet?
| Character | Where the character appears | Role in the story | How to identify the version |
|---|---|---|---|
| Imhotep | The Mummy (1932); also central to the 1999 adventure branch | An ancient Egyptian priest whose mummy is revived | Boris Karloff plays the 1932 Imhotep; the 1999 film reworks the concept in a different continuity |
| Kharis | Universal’s 1940s cycle and Hammer’s 1959 film | A mummified high priest and avenging supernatural figure | Universal and Hammer use separate interpretations, despite sharing the name |
| Princess Ahmanet | The Mummy (2017) | An ancient princess awakened in the modern world | A new female mummy character in the reboot, unrelated to Imhotep and Kharis continuity |
The names therefore signal different branches rather than different stages of one biography. Imhotep is the key figure in the 1932 story and the modern loose remake; Kharis anchors the classic Universal and Hammer interpretations; Ahmanet belongs only to the 2017 reboot.

Which Mummy movie is a remake?
The 1999 film: a loose remake
The Mummy (1999) is the clearest remake relationship. It reuses the 1932 film’s basic concept of an ancient Egyptian mummy returning to threaten the living, but its action-adventure tone, characters and continuity are distinct. Calling it a “loose remake” is more accurate than calling it a direct sequel.
The 1959 film: another interpretation
Hammer’s 1959 film also draws from earlier Universal mummy material, but it is better described as a separate interpretation centered on Kharis. It does not continue the events of the 1932 film or the later Fraser movies.
The 2017 film: a reboot
The 2017 production is a reboot. It introduces Nick Morton and Princess Ahmanet, relocates the premise to a contemporary setting and establishes new rules for its characters. It does not continue Rick O’Connell’s storyline and should not be filed under the Fraser trilogy’s continuity.

If you want one complete modern story
- The Mummy (1999)
- The Mummy Returns (2001)
- The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
This is the only three-film sequence in the franchise with a simple, self-contained release order.
If you want classic Universal horror
- The Mummy (1932)
- The Mummy’s Hand
- The Mummy’s Tomb
- The Mummy’s Ghost
- The Mummy’s Curse
- Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy
Expect a transition from Karloff’s original Imhotep story into the Kharis cycle, followed by a comedy crossover at the end.
If you prefer Hammer’s gothic style
- The Mummy (1959)
- The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb (1964)
- The Mummy’s Shroud (1967)
- Blood from the Mummy’s Tomb (1971)
This order follows Hammer’s release sequence and keeps its interpretation separate from Universal’s earlier films.
If you are curious about the reboot
Watch The Mummy (2017) by itself. No earlier movie is required to understand its premise, and watching the Fraser trilogy first will not supply missing backstory for Nick Morton or Ahmanet.

- Assuming every film titled The Mummy is a sequel: The title is reused across unrelated branches.
- Putting 2017 after 2008: The 2017 production is a reboot, not the next chapter of the Fraser story.
- Treating every Kharis as the same character: Universal’s and Hammer’s versions come from separate continuities.
- Calling The Scorpion King a fourth Mummy film: It is a spin-off launched by The Mummy Returns.
- Expecting the 1999 movie to reproduce 1932 exactly: It is a loose remake with a different tone and storyline.
The practical rule is simple: identify the era or lead film before choosing an order. “1932,” “1959,” “1999,” and “2017” are not interchangeable labels; each points to a different version of the mummy myth.
