Spoilers: This is a full ending guide for The Mortuary Assistant. The original release is commonly described as having six principal endings. A developer update on June 28, 2023 added another ending and more lore, so current players may encounter seven meaningful routes, with exact counts and achievement behavior varying by version and platform.

Every route grows out of the same task: Rebecca Owens must embalm bodies at River Fields Mortuary, identify which corpse is possessed, build the demon’s mark from matching sigils, bind the demon to that body, and burn it in the retort. Optional exploration and personal-history items determine whether that successful shift produces a standard progression scene, the Basement route, Closure, or the later House of Delver ending.

How many endings does The Mortuary Assistant have?

There are six endings in the original ending structure, plus a later secret route added by the developers in the June 28, 2023 update. Older guides and the in-game achievement discussion therefore refer to six, while newer guides may count the House of Delver route as a seventh.

The six classic outcomes are:

  1. First successful shift, often called I Survived or the Correct Body ending.
  2. Second successful shift, usually labeled Standard or Good.
  3. Incorrect Body or Unsuccessful Shift.
  4. Game Over or Possession.
  5. Basement, also called Six Feet Under.
  6. Closure, also called Sobriety.

The post-2023 route is commonly called the Secret Ending or House of Delver ending. Those names are guide labels rather than confirmed official in-game titles. The Mortician achievement is associated with the six original endings in guides published around the original release; a later update or a different platform may track the added route differently.

The July 2024 Definitive Edition announcement also matters when comparing lists. It added more haunt events, additional lore and bodies, an embalming-only mode, and console releases for PlayStation and Xbox alongside the existing PC and Switch versions. Because content and achievement systems can differ, use the route requirements below rather than relying only on an ending number.

The ritual every successful ending shares

Raymond Delver tells Rebecca that the haunting will continue unless she keeps working at the mortuary. Each night shift therefore combines ordinary embalming with a demon-identification test. A successful ending requires the same basic ritual even when an optional event changes the final scene.

  1. Inspect the bodies. Use the letting strips and examine each cadaver for abnormalities. The possessed body is identified by matching the signs you observe to the Night Shift database.
  2. Record the demon’s sigils. Find the symbols associated with the possession during the shift. You need four matching sigils to construct the mark.
  3. Assemble the mark. Use the mark-construction interface to combine the four correct sigils. A wrong combination gives you an incorrect or unusable mark.
  4. Bind the demon. Place the completed mark on the possessed body.
  5. Embalm completely. Follow the normal embalming workflow and include Baleful Reagent. Omitting it can turn an otherwise correct identification into a failure.
  6. Burn the marked body. Put the body carrying the correct mark into the retort and complete the burn. Burning the wrong body or burning before the ritual is ready leads to a failure route.

The first two successful endings differ because the game treats the first completed banishment as a separate progression milestone from a later successful shift. Optional routes still require you to finish the final shift correctly unless their instructions specifically describe a failure.

Secret / House of Delver Correct body burned with Vallery’s mark, followed by basement rescue Basement route, Vallery’s mark, hammer, bolt cutters Expands the Delver and Vallery lore Added June 28, 2023

1. First successful shift: Correct Body or “I Survived”

This is the normal first progression outcome. Complete the identification and banishment sequence without selecting an optional ending trigger.

  1. Work through the shift’s bodies with letting strips and the Night Shift database.
  2. Confirm the possessed corpse and assemble its four matching sigils into the correct mark.
  3. Apply the mark to that corpse.
  4. Finish embalming, including Baleful Reagent.
  5. Burn the marked, possessed body in the retort.

Walkthroughs commonly associate this first successful shift with the “I Survived” progression. It is not the same outcome as the second standard success: the game uses the first completed shift to establish Rebecca’s situation before allowing the ongoing loop to advance.

2. Second successful shift: Standard or Good ending

After completing the first shift successfully, accept another shift and repeat the core ritual. Identify the demon correctly, construct the matching mark, complete embalming with Baleful Reagent, and burn the correct body.

Guides call this the Standard or Good ending because it advances Rebecca’s relationship with Raymond and the continuing cycle at River Fields. You do not need the basement items or the sobriety items for this route. Avoid optional events if you want the straightforward second-success progression rather than one of the specialized endings.

3. Incorrect Body or Unsuccessful Shift

This ending occurs when the ritual reaches the retort with the wrong answer. The most common causes are:

  • Burning a body that is not possessed.
  • Using the wrong mark or failing to construct the required mark.
  • Leaving out Baleful Reagent during embalming.
  • Otherwise completing the shift in a way that does not bind the demon to the correct corpse.

The resulting scene is a bad outcome rather than a successful banishment. If you are repeatedly seeing this route, slow down before the retort: compare every observed sign with the Night Shift database, verify all four sigils, check the mark on the body, and confirm that the embalming process included Baleful Reagent.

4. Game Over or Possession

The possession route is the game’s death-style outcome. Rebecca can be fully possessed, the shift can run out of time, or the ritual can collapse through a premature or otherwise invalid burn.

How to trigger it

  • Allow the demon to complete its possession of Rebecca.
  • Run out of time during the shift.
  • Burn a body prematurely.
  • Make choices that let the shift fail before a valid banishment.

What happens afterward

Guides treat this as a game over rather than a normal progression ending. Restart from the menu and begin another shift. Unlike the Incorrect Body route, which centers on an invalid corpse or ritual result, Possession is the point at which Rebecca herself is overtaken or the shift becomes unrecoverable.

5. Basement or Six Feet Under ending

The Basement route requires optional exploration during a shift and a correct final banishment. The key sequence begins with the cold-storage basement event.

Step 1: Enter the basement event

During a shift, investigate the basement event in cold storage. The event can present numbered stone figures that conceal the first key item.

Step 2: Open the numbered stone figures

Open the numbered stone figures to obtain a key. Continue the basement sequence rather than returning immediately to the ordinary embalming loop.

Step 4: Find the large old key

Search the opened area for the large old key. It is required to reach the outside basement doors.

Step 5: Unlock Vallery’s room

Go outside to the basement doors, use the key to unlock Vallery’s room, and speak with Vallery.

Step 6: Finish the shift correctly

Return upstairs, identify the possessed body, construct its correct mark, complete embalming with Baleful Reagent, and burn the marked body. The Basement or Six Feet Under scene follows the successful ritual.

The optional exploration is what distinguishes this route from the first and second standard successes. If the basement event does not appear, continue playing additional shifts; haunt events are not guaranteed on a particular night.

6. Closure or Sobriety ending

Closure is tied to Rebecca’s personal history rather than the basement. You must collect two sobriety coins and a necklace, respond to the relevant hallucination, and still complete the shift correctly.

Collect the two sobriety coins

Search Rebecca’s apartment and the mortuary for the two sobriety coins. Keep them available during a shift; finding one item alone is not enough.

Collect the necklace

Find the necklace associated with Rebecca’s personal-history sequence. It can be collected from the apartment and mortuary exploration sequence along with the coins.

Respond to the correct apparition

The trigger is random, so it may take several shifts. When the relevant hanging or father hallucination appears, use the matching item:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Place the sobriety coins in the apparition’s open hands.
  • Place the necklace on the father figure when that version of the hallucination appears.

Do not assume the event failed simply because it did not appear on the next shift. Its random trigger is the reason several attempts may be necessary.

Complete the banishment

After the item interaction, finish the ordinary shift: identify the demon, build the four-sigil mark, apply it to the possessed body, embalm with Baleful Reagent, and burn that body. Closure is the outcome of the personal-history interaction followed by a correct ritual, not a replacement for the ritual.

7. Secret or House of Delver ending

This later route builds on the basement sequence and was added in the developer’s June 28, 2023 update. The update’s official patch note states: “A new ending has been added to the game.”

Step 1: Complete the basement route far enough to reach Vallery

Use the basement procedure: trigger the cold-storage event, open the numbered stone figures, enter keypad code 197044, obtain the hatch key, find the large old key, open the outside basement doors, and speak with Vallery in her room.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Take Vallery’s mark from her coffin

Continue the basement exploration until you can take Vallery’s mark from her coffin. This is different from the ordinary four-sigil mark used for the night’s possessed body.

Step 3: Burn the correct body with Vallery’s mark

Identify the night’s actual possessed body as usual. Apply Vallery’s mark as required by the route, complete the embalming process with Baleful Reagent, and burn the correct body in the retort.

Step 4: Return to the basement after the retort

When the retort sequence ends, go back to the basement rather than ending the exploration there.

Step 5: Break the locked door and free Vallery

Use the hammer on the locked door. Collect the bolt cutters, then use them to free Vallery. This rescue sequence is the distinguishing conclusion of the House of Delver route.

“Secret Ending” and “The House of Delver” are descriptive names used by guides. The route is nevertheless distinct from the six classic outcomes because it was added after the original ending structure.

How to identify the correct body reliably

Most failed attempts come from treating one clue as conclusive. The game expects you to combine the letting-strip results, visible abnormalities and the Night Shift database before choosing a corpse.

  1. Inspect every available body rather than committing to the first unusual one.
  2. Use letting strips and note which signs occur on which corpse.
  3. Check each sign against the Night Shift database.
  4. Track the four sigils associated with the demon revealed by that evidence.
  5. Construct the mark only after all four sigils agree.
  6. Verify that the mark is placed on the same body you identified.
  7. Complete embalming and confirm Baleful Reagent was used before the retort.
  8. Burn only the marked possessed body.

This checklist also explains why a “wrong body” result can appear even when the player recognized the demon family: the body, the mark and the final ingredient all have to line up.

Why a desired ending may not appear

The basement event has not triggered

Basement content depends on an event during a shift. Continue taking shifts and inspect cold storage when the event begins. The route cannot be completed without the stone figures, the hatch sequence and the conversation with Vallery.

Closure items are collected but nothing happens

The hanging or father hallucination is random. Keep both sobriety coins and the necklace, then continue through additional shifts until the relevant apparition appears. Use coins for the open hands and the necklace for the father figure.

The ending count does not match a guide

Check the guide’s publication date and your edition. Original 2022 coverage generally lists six endings. The June 28, 2023 update added another ending, and the Definitive Edition expanded content and platforms in July 2024. A platform’s achievement list may still use the original six-ending structure even when the newer route is playable.

The game keeps giving the Incorrect Body outcome

Recheck all four parts of the ritual, not just the corpse: demon evidence, four-sigil mark, Baleful Reagent and the final retort choice. A missing ingredient or an incorrect mark can produce the same broad failure result as selecting the wrong corpse.

The shift ends in Possession

Possession is not repaired by changing the ending item. Restart from the menu, manage the shift before time expires, and avoid a premature burn or other action that lets the demon fully take Rebecca.

Recommended order for seeing every route

  1. Complete the first ordinary successful shift to unlock the basic progression.
  2. Complete a second ordinary successful shift for the Standard or Good outcome.
  3. Deliberately make a controlled ritual mistake if you want the Incorrect Body route, then restart for further progress.
  4. Allow a possession or time-out only when you are intentionally pursuing the Game Over route.
  5. Explore the basement and finish the shift correctly for Six Feet Under.
  6. Collect the coins and necklace, wait for the random hallucination, perform the matching interaction, and finish correctly for Closure.
  7. After the 2023 content is available, repeat the basement exploration, take Vallery’s mark, burn the correct body with it, return downstairs, and free Vallery for House of Delver.

This order separates failure outcomes from progression outcomes and prevents an accidental wrong-body burn from obscuring the optional routes.

Version and platform notes

When comparing achievement lists, walkthroughs or ending totals, identify the edition first. The original 2022 guides describe six principal endings. The developer’s June 28, 2023 patch explicitly added a new ending and more lore. The July 2024 Definitive Edition announcement describes additional haunt events, lore, bodies and an embalming-only mode, plus PlayStation and Xbox releases alongside PC and Switch.

Consequently, “six endings” is accurate for the classic structure, while “seven” is a useful current guide count when the post-2023 House of Delver route is included. The route instructions themselves are more reliable than a number shown in a trophy, achievement or platform menu.
