Before beginning a long chapter in The Midnight Walk on Nintendo Switch 2, open the game’s Options menu and check brightness, subtitles, audio, controls, and any visual-comfort switches that are actually present in your build. Start with small brightness changes in a shadow-heavy scene, enlarge and increase the contrast of subtitles if those controls are offered, and disable motion effects or camera shake if they reduce clarity or make you uncomfortable.
The game’s public Switch 2 listing does not document a complete graphics or accessibility menu, so exact toggle names and defaults must be confirmed on the console. Treat the recommendations below as a practical setup process, not as a claim that every listed option exists.
What the Switch 2 edition is—and what is confirmed
The Midnight Walk is a digital Nintendo Switch 2 release from Fast Travel Games dated March 26, 2026. Nintendo lists a 14.7 GB download, one-player support on one system, TV, tabletop, and handheld play, the listed regional languages, and surround-sound support. Those product facts establish the platforms and storage requirement; they do not constitute a full list of in-game graphics or accessibility controls.

The presentation is unusual enough that display tuning matters. Nintendo describes a world made from real clay, 3D-scanned and presented as stop-motion imagery. You travel with Potboy, a lantern companion whose flame can distract fire-eating monsters while you hide and evade threats. Dark scenes, strong pools of light, and the flame’s role in stealth make shadow detail and readable text practical concerns rather than cosmetic preferences.

A Nintendo Life review published April 4, 2026, describes the Switch 2 version as a stop-motion horror adventure and was captured in handheld, undocked play. It is useful context for the game’s atmospheric intent, but it does not publish a complete menu map or mode-specific preset.
What Nintendo’s public listing does not establish
- It does not publish a Switch 2 brightness percentage, gamma value, or recommended preset.
- It does not confirm that the Switch 2 build has film grain, motion blur, camera shake, flash reduction, subtitle sizing, speaker labels, subtitle backgrounds, or contrast controls.
- It does not publish a Switch 2 control map, remapping list, stick-sensitivity range, inversion setting, or vibration controls.
- It confirms surround sound, but not a particular headphone, television, or subtitle-focused mix.
Whenever this guide says “if available,” look for the control in the live Options menu. Do not assume a control reported for another edition carries over to Switch 2.
Five-minute setup before the first long chapter
- Open Options before starting. From the title screen, choose the game’s Options entry. If you are already in a chapter, pause with the button prompt shown on-screen and enter Options from that menu.
- Check the display page. Find brightness or display calibration if it exists. Make one small change at a time and test it in a dark, lighting-dependent area.
- Make dialogue readable. In Subtitles or Accessibility, increase text size and contrast if those controls are offered. Enable a background or speaker labels when they help you follow conversations from your normal viewing distance.
- Review visual-intensity controls. If the build exposes film grain, motion blur, camera shake, flashing-effect reduction, or a similar switch, turn off the effect that obscures movement or causes discomfort. If no such control appears, use the console and room adjustments described below.
- Set controls and sound. Confirm stick sensitivity, inversion, vibration, subtitle language, and the relationship between dialogue, effects, and music. Save the menu before entering the chapter.
Recheck the setup whenever you move between handheld, tabletop, and TV play. Nintendo confirms all three modes, but it does not publish mode-specific presets.
Brightness: reveal shadows without washing out the clay lighting
There is no cited Switch 2 source that gives a correct brightness percentage for The Midnight Walk. A number that works on one television, in one room, can make a handheld look grey or leave another television’s shadows unreadable. Use an image check instead of copying a percentage.

Handheld and tabletop
- Set the Switch 2 screen to the brightness you normally use for play, not the maximum setting used outdoors.
- Open the game’s brightness control, if present, and move it only one step at a time.
- Use a scene with deep shadow and a nearby light source. You should be able to distinguish the path, nearby objects, and Potboy’s flame without turning every dark area into a flat grey field.
- Hold the console at your normal distance and angle. A value that looks correct when the screen is close to your face may lose detail when the system is on a table.
For handheld play, prioritize legibility over perfect preservation of the darkest blacks. Stop adjusting as soon as you can identify hazards and environmental edges; excessive brightness weakens the intended contrast between the clay figures and the pools of light.
TV mode
- Set the television to the picture mode you actually use for games before changing the in-game control.
- Dim or turn off competing room lights so you can judge the game image rather than reflections.
- Check a shadow-heavy passage from your usual seating position. If blacks merge, raise the game’s brightness slightly, then reassess. If the entire image looks grey and the brightest areas lose separation, lower it.
- Repeat the check after switching back to handheld. Keep separate notes if your television and portable screen need visibly different settings.
A brighter image is not automatically better. The stop-motion style depends on lighting contrast, and over-brightening can hide the difference between a safe route, a hiding place, and a monster’s silhouette.
Subtitles and dialogue readability
Subtitle controls are especially valuable during stealth sections, when you may be watching Potboy’s flame or a threat instead of staring at the lower edge of the screen. Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing does not enumerate subtitle options, so inspect the current build rather than relying on feature lists for other versions.
If subtitle controls are present
- Size: Increase the text until it is readable from your normal handheld or TV distance without leaning forward.
- Contrast: Choose the strongest text/background combination that remains comfortable. White text over a translucent dark panel is often easier to track than unbacked text over clay scenery, but use the choices the game provides.
- Background or window: Enable a solid or semi-opaque background when bright flames, fog, or moving figures make letters disappear.
- Speaker labels: Turn them on if voices can come from off-screen or several characters speak during an evasion sequence.
- Language: Select the language you can read fastest; a subtitle language change may require returning to the title screen or reloading a chapter, depending on the build.
If the build has only an on/off subtitle switch
Keep subtitles enabled and improve readability outside the game: move closer in handheld or tabletop, choose a less reflective television picture mode, reduce room glare, and use headphones or a quieter audio mix so you do not need to infer words from partial text. Do not describe a size slider, speaker-label option, or background panel as available unless you can see it in your own Switch 2 menu.

Film grain, motion blur, camera shake, and flashes
The public Switch 2 product page does not confirm these toggles. Look in Display, Graphics, Accessibility, or a similarly named tab. Menu labels and defaults can change between builds, so record what your console actually shows.
When disabling an effect helps
- Film grain: Turning it off can make small subtitle characters and dark edges cleaner, at the cost of some of the intended cinematic texture.
- Motion blur: Disabling it can make camera movement and fleeing enemies easier to follow, especially on a handheld screen.
- Camera shake: Reducing or disabling it can help players who find impacts or rapid movement uncomfortable and can keep a narrow path in view during a scare.
- Flash or visual-intensity reduction: If offered, enable it when bright pulses or repeated patterns cause discomfort. If it is absent, pause, look away, and reduce play time when symptoms begin.
These are comfort and clarity choices, not performance claims. There is no cited Switch 2 evidence that one setting increases frame rate or resolution. If a control is missing, do not substitute a made-up value; use brightness, distance, room lighting, and breaks instead.
Use a profile for each play mode
The following profiles are starting points. They compare the trade-offs that matter for this game; they do not imply that every row is a selectable preset.
| Play situation | Brightness and contrast | Text | Motion and intensity | Audio |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Handheld in a dim room | Raise only enough to separate paths and objects from shadows; preserve the darkest contrast. | Use larger text or a stronger background if available. | Disable blur or shake if the small screen makes movement hard to parse. | Moderate effects and music; keep dialogue prominent. |
| Handheld in a bright room or outdoors | Reduce reflections first, then make a small brightness adjustment and retest a dark scene. | Use the highest comfortable contrast and size. | Reduce distracting effects when glare already lowers clarity. | Headphones or a quieter room can prevent missed dialogue. |
| TV in a dark room | Protect black levels; raise brightness only when shadow detail disappears from the sofa. | Choose a size readable at your actual seating distance. | Keep the intended atmosphere if comfortable; disable effects that trigger discomfort. | Surround sound can widen environmental cues; balance dialogue so it is not buried. |
| TV in a bright room | Control glare and competing lights before lifting the game image. | Use a background or speaker labels if the scene behind the text is busy. | Turn off blur or shake when reflections make movement ambiguous. | Use subtitles as the primary aid if room noise masks voices. |
After docking or undocking, spend a minute checking the same three things: can you identify the route through a dark area, can you read a full subtitle line, and can you distinguish dialogue from effects?

Controls and audio to verify
Controls
Nintendo does not publish a Switch 2 control map or remapping list for this title. In the live Controls menu, check whether you can adjust stick sensitivity, invert a camera axis, change vibration strength, or remap actions. Keep the default layout initially so tutorial prompts match the buttons, then change one control at a time and test it in a safe area. If there is no remapping, use the console’s supported controller configuration options only when they do not conflict with the game’s prompts.
Audio and subtitles together
The listing confirms surround-sound support, but it does not define a recommended speaker layout. Test the game with the setup you actually use: television speakers, headphones, or a surround system. Raise dialogue relative to music and effects when the menu permits it. In a noisy room, subtitles are more reliable than repeatedly increasing overall volume, which can make sudden effects uncomfortable.
Listen for Potboy and nearby threats at a comfortable level before relying on surround positioning. Environmental audio can add useful context, but it should not force you to play at a volume that causes fatigue.

Safety and visual comfort
Nintendo’s listing carries a warning for people with epilepsy or unusual reactions to flashing lights or patterns. Nintendo advises consulting a doctor and directs all users to the Health and Safety Information in system settings. Read that information before playing, especially if you or someone watching has a known sensitivity.

- Stop immediately if flashing, patterns, dizziness, nausea, eye strain, or unusual reactions begin.
- Take regular breaks instead of trying to acclimate to discomfort.
- Play in a well-lit room and avoid placing the screen so reflections or glare force you to squint.
- Do not treat a missing in-game flash-reduction switch as evidence that the scenes are safe for every player.
Troubleshooting by symptom
“The dark scene is a black mass.”
Check room glare and the television or handheld brightness first. Raise the game control slightly, test a shadow-heavy scene, and stop before highlights become flat grey. If no brightness control exists, adjust the display you are using and improve the viewing angle or room lighting.
“I can hear dialogue but cannot read subtitles.”
Look for size, contrast, background, and speaker-label controls. If none are present, reduce glare, move to your normal viewing distance, switch to a clearer display mode, and use headphones or a quieter room.
“Movement makes me lose track of the scene.”
Search the current build for motion blur, camera shake, film grain, or a visual-intensity setting and disable one effect at a time. If no switch exists, shorten sessions, increase viewing distance, and take a break at the first sign of discomfort.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The TV looks fine, but handheld does not.”
Undocked and docked screens have different sizes, viewing distances, and reflections. Recheck brightness and subtitle readability in handheld rather than assuming the TV setting carries over. Nintendo confirms both modes but does not provide a shared preset.
“I cannot find a setting mentioned online.”
Check every tab in Options, including Accessibility, Display, Subtitles, Audio, and Controls, and confirm that the game is updated. If the option still is not present, treat it as unavailable in your build; reports about another edition do not prove Switch 2 parity.
The order that minimizes rework
- Choose your play mode and normal room lighting.
- Calibrate brightness in a dark scene.
- Set subtitle size, contrast, background, and labels if offered.
- Disable only the motion or visual effects that reduce clarity or comfort.
- Set controls, vibration, and audio balance.
- Play a short section, then recheck the three practical tests: route visibility, subtitle readability, and comfortable sound.
This order preserves the game’s clay-sculpted stop-motion look while addressing the settings most likely to affect navigation, stealth, and comfort. Because the Switch 2 listing does not publish a complete menu specification, the current console build—not a feature list for another platform—is the final authority on which controls you can use.
