The original Meta Quest 4 story was built around a 2026 launch for two headsets: a standard Quest 4 and a cheaper Quest 4S. That plan is now outdated. As of August 9, 2026, there is no verified evidence that either headset will launch this year.

More recent reporting points to a substantially different strategy: Meta is reportedly developing a lightweight headset with a separate, tethered compute puck for early 2027, followed by a more conventional gaming-focused Quest successor in late 2027 or possibly 2028. Meta has confirmed that several next-generation headsets are in development, but it has not confirmed the Quest 4 name, specifications, price, or release date.

What the original 2026 Quest 4 report claimed

In July 2024, The Information reported that Meta was planning two Quest 4 models for 2026. The expected lineup consisted of:

  • Quest 4: the main, higher-end successor to Quest 3.
  • Quest 4S: a cheaper model aimed at bringing newer hardware to more buyers.

The interesting part was the proposed simultaneous launch. Meta appeared to be considering a premium-and-budget strategy rather than launching a flagship headset first and adding an affordable version later. A successor to the Quest Pro was reportedly planned for 2027 as a separate product.

That report was repeated by outlets including Android Central and UploadVR. However, it described an internal plan, not a launch announcement from Meta.

Why the 2026 release claim no longer holds

According to UploadVR’s December 2025 reporting, Meta canceled the earlier products reportedly known internally as Pismo Low and Pismo High. Those devices were believed to be the candidates for the planned 2026 Quest 4 and Quest 4S launch.

Meta is instead said to have started work on a new gaming-focused mainline headset. The revised internal roadmap reportedly puts a lightweight headset first, in the first half of 2027, with the conventional Quest successor arriving in the second half of 2027 or sometime in 2028.

Those dates are estimates from reporting about an internal roadmap. They are not confirmed release dates, and product plans can change before a headset reaches the market.

The new twist: two different headset directions

The important change is not simply that Quest 4 may be delayed. Meta now appears to be pursuing two notably different types of hardware.

Product direction Reported focus Earliest reported timing Confidence
Lightweight headset Seated use, virtual screens and a separate tethered compute puck First half of 2027 Unconfirmed roadmap estimate
Traditional Quest successor Gaming and a major upgrade over Quest 3 Second half of 2027 or 2028 Unconfirmed roadmap estimate

The lightweight product would be a different proposition from a normal standalone Quest. A tethered compute puck could reduce the weight and size of the device worn on the user’s face, but it would also introduce an external component and a connection between the headset and puck. That design sounds better suited to seated productivity, large virtual displays and media use than to unrestricted room-scale gaming.

The traditional Quest successor is reportedly being developed as the gaming product. It is expected to be a more meaningful upgrade from Quest 3, although Meta has not revealed what that means in terms of processor, displays, tracking, battery life or controllers.

What Meta has officially confirmed

Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth has said the company is working on “multiple next-generation headsets.” He also indicated that the company could share more information around Meta Connect 2026.

Meta Quest 3S 128GB | Virtual Reality — VR Headset (Renewed Premium)
  • NO WIRES, MORE FUN — Break free from cords. Game, play, exercise and explore immersive worlds — untethered and without limits.
  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the SnapdragonTM XR2 Gen 2 processor.
  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Take gaming to a new level and blend virtual objects with your physical space to experience two worlds at once.
  • 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up.
  • 33% MORE MEMORY — Elevate your play with 8GB of RAM. Upgraded memory delivers a next-level experience fueled by sharper graphics and more responsive performance.

That statement confirms ongoing headset development, but it does not confirm any of the details often attached to Quest 4 rumors. Meta has not officially announced:

  • the Quest 4 name;
  • a Quest 4 or Quest 4S release date;
  • a launch price;
  • the processor or graphics hardware;
  • display resolution, refresh rate or field of view;
  • eye tracking or face tracking;
  • controller changes; or
  • whether the lightweight headset will be sold as a Quest product.

In other words, Bosworth’s comments are evidence that Meta has not abandoned headset development. They are not evidence that a consumer Quest 4 will ship in 2026.

Could the Quest 4 cost more?

Possibly, but there is no verified price. The newer gaming-focused headset is reportedly being developed with improved unit economics rather than relying as heavily on Meta’s earlier low-price subsidy approach.

If that report is accurate, the next flagship Quest could launch at a higher price than buyers expect. That would make sense if Meta wants the hardware business to produce better returns, particularly as Reality Labs faces pressure from lower Quest headset sales. Meta’s financial reporting has also highlighted strong growth in AI glasses, which provides useful context for the company’s hardware priorities.

Meta Quest 3 512GB | Virtual Reality — VR Headset — Renewed Premium
  • NEARLY 30% LEAP IN RESOLUTION — Experience every thrill in breathtaking detail with sharp graphics and stunning 4K Infinite Display.
  • NO WIRES, MORE FUN — Break free from cords. Play, explore and exercise in immersive worlds — untethered and without limits.
  • 2X GRAPHICAL PROCESSING POWER — Enjoy lightning-fast load times and next-gen graphics for smooth gaming powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor.
  • EXPERIENCE VIRTUAL REALITY — Blend virtual objects with your physical space and experience two worlds at once.
  • 2+ HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE — Charge less, play longer and stay in the action with an improved battery that keeps up.

None of this means Meta is leaving VR. It does mean the company may be less willing to sell advanced headsets at aggressively low prices. Until Meta provides a price, any specific figure is speculation.

What shoppers should do now

If you are considering a headset in 2026, do not delay a purchase solely because a Quest 4 is “definitely” launching this year. That claim is based on the older 2024 report and does not match the stronger, newer reporting.

A practical way to assess the situation is:

  1. Need a headset now? Evaluate the current Quest lineup on its actual software, price and comfort rather than an unannounced successor.
  2. Want a major gaming upgrade? Waiting may make sense, but plan around “2027 at the earliest,” not a fixed date.
  3. Want lightweight virtual monitors? Watch the reported tethered-puck device separately. It may not be a direct replacement for a gaming Quest.
  4. See a detailed Quest 4 specification list? Treat it as a leak until Meta publishes the information. Specific claims about eye tracking, face tracking, displays and processors are currently unverified.

What remains unknown

The name “Quest 4” itself is not officially confirmed. The same applies to “Quest 4S.” The earlier two-model plan may have been canceled entirely, or Meta may reuse those names for products based on the revised roadmap.

There is also no confirmed relationship between the lightweight headset and the traditional gaming headset. They could launch under different product families, share software, or target entirely separate audiences. The reported compute puck could be a defining feature of the lightweight device, but Meta has not publicly described its design or requirements.

For now, the safest conclusion is that Meta is still investing in next-generation headsets, but the original 2026 Quest 4 story has been superseded by a less certain and more complicated roadmap.

FAQ

Is the Meta Quest 4 launching in 2026?

There is no verified evidence of a consumer Quest 4 launch in 2026. Earlier reporting pointed to 2026, but the products associated with that plan were reportedly canceled. Current reporting points to 2027 at the earliest, with a conventional gaming headset possibly arriving in late 2027 or 2028.

Will there be a Meta Quest 4S?

A Quest 4S was part of the older 2024 report about a two-headset 2026 launch. It is not a confirmed product, and newer reporting no longer supports presenting the Quest 4S as part of Meta’s current roadmap.

What is the reported lightweight Meta headset?

It is reportedly a lightweight device designed for seated use, virtual screens and other productivity or media tasks. Instead of containing all of its computing hardware, it may connect to a separate compute puck. Meta has not officially announced the product or confirmed its specifications.

Has Meta canceled the Quest line?

No. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth has said the company is building multiple next-generation headsets. That confirms continued development, although it does not guarantee that a particular product called Quest 4 will ship.

The Bottom Line

The headline claim that Meta Quest 4 is coming in 2026 is no longer reliable. The earlier Quest 4-and-Quest 4S plan appears to have been replaced by a two-track strategy: a lightweight, compute-puck-based headset reportedly targeted for early 2027, and a more traditional gaming-focused Quest successor that may arrive in late 2027 or 2028. Meta confirms that next-generation headsets are in development, but everything beyond that—including the name, price, specifications and launch date—remains unconfirmed.
