The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition is a welcome, if uneven, return for fans of the 2011 action RPG. Its parallel Tolkien story, three-character party and cooperative play still have appeal, and modern-platform conveniences make it easier to revisit. But this is not a thorough rebuild: repetitive combat and launch-period technical problems reported by reviewers make it a cautious recommendation rather than an essential modern RPG.
Is War in the North Legacy Edition worth playing?
It is most appealing if you are a Tolkien fan, remember the original, or want a straightforward action RPG to play cooperatively. The North offers a different angle on the War of the Ring, and its three heroes give a group distinct roles to play. The underlying game, however, remains largely the 2011 experience. Players looking for varied combat, a deeply modernized design, or a launch free of reported bugs should temper their expectations.
The reviews available here cover different Nintendo hardware and should not be treated as a direct platform comparison. Ethan Zack’s Nintendo Life review examined the North American Switch 2 version in docked mode. He found welcome additions but also reported audio problems, performance dips, visual glitches, and a miniboss bug that blocked progress; combined with the save system, that incident forced a restart. Matt Evans at TechRadar reviewed the original Nintendo Switch version, reporting 15 hours of play across handheld and TV modes. He found it diverting for fans of the original and simple action RPGs, while criticizing repetitive combat, a weak story, technical problems, and awkward character swapping and inventory management.

What is the game about?
The story runs alongside Frodo and Sam’s journey to Mount Doom. You lead another Fellowship in the North against Agandaûr, a servant of Sauron who has gathered forces there. The playable heroes are Eradan, a Dúnedain Ranger; Andriel, an Elven Loremaster; and Farin, a Dwarven Champion. Official listings describe distinct combat roles, character progression through skills and gear, and appearances by familiar Tolkien characters and locations. PlayStation Store Nintendo UK
What changed in the Legacy Edition?
The original game launched in 2011 for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. The Legacy Edition brings it back on newer platforms, but “remaster” can overstate how much has changed: Nintendo Life characterizes it as somewhere between a basic port and a full remaster, with the underlying game largely intact. Reviewers note practical additions rather than a wholesale redesign. Zack highlights hot-swapping and gyro aiming on Switch 2; Evans notes autosaves and improved framerates on the original Switch. Those observations are specific to their reviewed versions, not a controlled comparison across platforms. The game still has the original’s action-RPG loop, and both reviewers found its combat repetitive.

How does solo play and co-op work?
Solo players can switch among the three heroes, whose roles provide different approaches to combat. In co-op, the party can be shared with friends rather than controlled by one player. Official listings describe both online and split-screen co-op for up to three players. PlayStation Store Xbox Store
Online play has platform-specific subscription requirements: PlayStation lists PS Plus for online multiplayer, while Xbox says console online multiplayer requires a qualifying Game Pass subscription. The cited listings do not establish cross-platform play, so do not assume players on different systems can join the same session. Nintendo Life’s Switch 2 review praises the cooperative appeal, while TechRadar flags awkwardness around switching characters and managing inventory on the original Switch.
