The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition requires Windows 11 in both its minimum and recommended PC configurations. Aspyr lists DirectX 12 and 25 GB of storage for either tier. Controller play is supported: Epic identifies a gamepad input device, while SteamDB records full controller support and gamepad-preferred input for the Steam build. SteamDB also marks the game Verified on Steam Deck, with a qualification for external controllers.
The game launched on Steam on August 11, 2026. The hardware figures below are Aspyr’s published requirements, not independent frame-rate benchmarks.
Official PC system requirements
Aspyr publishes the same specifications on the game’s Steam listing and Epic Games Store listing. A 64-bit processor and 64-bit operating system are required in both tiers.

These are vendor requirement figures for the Windows release. Neither storefront supplies a guaranteed frame rate, resolution target, quality preset, or independent benchmark for the listed parts. Meeting the minimum is therefore a compatibility threshold, not a promise of a particular visual setting or performance level.

What changes between the tiers
- The recommended configuration has twice the listed system memory of the minimum configuration.
- Its processor class is newer and more capable, which gives the game more headroom for busy scenes and background applications.
- The recommended graphics options move from older GTX/R9-era hardware to RTX 2060 or RX 6600-class hardware.
- DirectX version and required free space do not change between tiers, so extra storage is not presented as a recommended-tier upgrade.
If your computer falls between the two rows, compare every component rather than judging the PC by its graphics card alone. A newer GPU paired with an older processor, or adequate memory on an unsupported operating system, can still leave you outside the stated configuration.
How to interpret each requirement
Windows 11 and 64-bit support
Windows 11 is the only operating system named in the current listings, for both minimum and recommended play. The requirement also specifies a 64-bit operating system and processor. A 32-bit Windows installation does not satisfy that wording, even if the installed memory and graphics card appear adequate.
To check the edition and architecture, open Settings and choose System > About. Read Windows specifications for the edition and version, then check System type under Device specifications. Windows 11 should be shown, with a 64-bit operating system and an x64-based processor.

The minimum row names an Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600. The recommended row names an Intel Core i5-12400F or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X. These are example models, not a requirement to use one of those exact chips; however, the listings do not define an alternative benchmark score or a precise equivalent list. When comparing another CPU, consider its generation, core and thread count, and sustained performance rather than assuming that an i5 or Ryzen 5 label alone makes it equivalent.
Windows shows the installed processor in Settings > System > About, or in Task Manager under Performance > CPU. Laptop names can include power-limited versions, so the model string is more useful than the marketing family name.

Memory
The minimum listing calls for 8 GB of RAM; the recommended listing calls for 16 GB. Available memory can be lower than installed memory because Windows and other applications consume part of it. Close browsers, launchers, recording tools, and overlays before testing a borderline system. If the game reports memory-related errors while other programs are open, reducing background use is a sensible first check, but it does not change the official requirement.
Graphics processor
A GeForce GTX 970 or Radeon R9 290X is the minimum graphics class. The recommended class is a GeForce RTX 2060 or Radeon RX 6600. The store pages do not state a target resolution, ray-tracing mode, texture setting, or expected frame rate, so the labels should be used to judge hardware eligibility rather than to predict a specific preset.

On a desktop with more than one GPU, make sure the game is assigned to the intended discrete adapter instead of an integrated graphics device.
DirectX and storage
Both tiers specify DirectX 12. Press Windows key + R, enter dxdiag, and press Enter to open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. The System tab shows the installed DirectX version; the Display tabs show driver and feature information for each adapter.
Allow at least 25 GB of free space on the drive where the game will be installed. The listings state the same capacity for minimum and recommended configurations. Leave additional working room for Windows updates, shader caches, save backups, and future patches; the published figure should not be treated as the amount of free space your whole drive needs.

Checking a PC before buying or installing
Use this sequence to avoid confusing a single suitable part with a compliant system:
- Confirm that the PC runs Windows 11 and that System type reports a 64-bit operating system.
- Record the exact CPU model from Settings > System > About or Task Manager.
- Check installed memory in Settings > System > About, then check Task Manager to see how much is available while your normal programs are running.
- Identify the active discrete GPU and compare its exact model with the graphics classes in the table. Do not rely on a product family name such as “GTX,” “RTX,” or “Radeon” without the model number.
- Run
dxdiagto verify DirectX information and check the Display tabs for driver problems. - In File Explorer, right-click the destination drive, choose Properties, and verify that more than the required free space remains after accounting for other software and updates.
If one component is below the minimum, the storefront requirements do not establish that the game will run acceptably. If every component meets the minimum but the PC is well below the recommended row, expect the result to depend on in-game settings and the workload of other applications; no official performance measurement is published.
Controller support on PC
Epic’s product page explicitly carries a controller-support indication and lists Gamepad as an additional input device. SteamDB’s configuration record lists Full Controller Support and Gamepad Preferred for the Steam version. You can review that secondary metadata at SteamDB’s configuration record.
Those labels establish that controller input is supported, but they are not a guarantee for every controller model, wireless adapter, firmware version, or operating-system setup. The official storefront pages do not name a required controller model. SteamDB separately records DualSense Controllers (USB Only); treat that as platform configuration metadata rather than a universal statement that every DualSense connection or every other controller works identically.
Wired and wireless choices
A USB connection is the least complicated way to troubleshoot because it removes Bluetooth pairing, battery, and adapter variables. A wireless pad can work when the operating system and storefront recognize it, but the available connection method can affect whether the launcher exposes it to the game. Pair the controller in Windows before starting the game, then confirm that the launcher shows it as an input device.

Do not infer that a controller working in another PC game will automatically use the same layout here. Check the game’s own input screen after launch, and keep a keyboard and mouse available for the launcher, sign-in prompts, or recovery if the pad is not detected.
Steam setup and detection steps
- Connect the controller by USB, or pair it in Windows Bluetooth settings before opening Steam.
- In Steam, open Settings > Controller and verify that the device appears in the controller list.
- Open the game’s Steam properties and review the controller section if Steam offers an input-layout or per-game override.
- Launch the game and test movement, camera control, menu navigation, and both analog sticks before joining a session.
- If input is duplicated or missing, disconnect other pads and virtual-controller software, restart Steam, and test the direct USB connection.
SteamDB’s “full” category describes the recorded configuration, not a measured test of every controller and connection combination. Keep that distinction in mind when diagnosing a device-specific problem.
Epic Games Store setup
- Connect or pair the controller in Windows before launching the Epic Games client.
- Confirm in Windows that button presses are recognized, then start the game from the Epic library.
- Use the game’s input options to select or test the gamepad layout.
- If the game ignores the pad, close other remapping utilities, reconnect the device, and restart the client and game.
Epic’s listing confirms the gamepad input category, but it does not publish a model-by-model compatibility matrix. A controller that is not detected should therefore be investigated as a connection, driver, or mapping issue rather than assumed to be unsupported hardware.

SteamDB records the game as Verified on Steam Deck and says all functionality is accessible with the default controller configuration. Its compatibility test is timestamped August 20, 2026. Because this is a dated third-party record, a later game, SteamOS, or Proton update could change the result.

The same record warns that an external Bluetooth or USB controller may not become active automatically. If the built-in Deck controls work but an external pad does not, open the Steam Deck Quick Access Menu, go to the controller order or controller settings, and switch the active controller to the external device. Reconnect the pad and repeat the selection after waking the Deck if necessary.

Verified status concerns the Steam Deck configuration, not every desktop Linux installation or every accessory. It also does not override the Windows requirements published for the PC storefront builds.
Online and split-screen co-op
Both storefront descriptions advertise playing with up to two friends online or in split-screen co-op. Aspyr’s product wording is: “Play with up to 2 friends online or in split-screen co-op.” The statement describes the advertised player count and modes; it does not specify a particular controller model, display arrangement, network speed, or performance target.
For local co-op, connect and test each controller before entering the session. For online play, make sure every participant has access to the same platform’s multiplayer service and that each input device is assigned to the intended player. If a second player cannot join, verify controller order and menu focus before changing graphics settings.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The game will not install
- Recheck that the destination drive has more free space than the listed capacity, not merely an amount equal to it.
- Confirm that the correct Windows drive and library location are selected.
- Restart the launcher and check for pending client or operating-system updates.
The game starts but reports a graphics or DirectX problem
- Run
dxdiagand inspect every Display tab for the active adapter and driver status. - Install the current driver supplied for the exact GPU model, then restart Windows.
- On a laptop, assign the game to the high-performance GPU in Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Compare the complete system against the minimum row rather than changing only one setting.
The controller is not recognized
- Test a direct USB connection and confirm Windows sees button input.
- Disconnect additional controllers, remappers, and virtual-input tools while diagnosing.
- Restart the relevant launcher after connecting the device.
- On Steam Deck, select the external controller manually from the Quick Access Menu as described above.
The controller works in menus but not for the intended player
- Check controller order in the launcher or Steam Deck quick-access controls.
- Reconnect devices in the desired player order.
- Enter the game’s input menu and test each pad before starting online or split-screen co-op.
Bottom line
For Windows, plan around Windows 11 64-bit, DirectX 12, and 25 GB of free space, then compare your CPU, RAM, and GPU with the two Aspyr rows rather than relying on a single component. Controller play is part of the advertised PC feature set, with SteamDB recording full, gamepad-preferred support and Epic naming gamepad input. The most dependable troubleshooting path is a direct USB connection and a clean launcher setup; on Steam Deck, external controllers may additionally require manual selection. No published source here promises a particular frame rate or universal compatibility for every controller model.
