Start with your monitor’s native resolution and borderless mode, then test a repeatable 60-FPS scene before changing individual options. That is a sensible baseline for The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition, but it is not an official benchmark or a guaranteed “best” preset. Aspyr advertises 60-FPS gameplay, while actual frame rate and stutter can vary with hardware, operating system, drivers, compatibility layers, display mode and the scene being rendered.

This guide separates published requirements and patch notes from user anecdotes, explains what the numbers do and do not prove, and gives a method you can repeat when diagnosing uneven performance on Windows or Linux/SteamOS.

A practical starting point for PC settings

The most defensible first configuration comes from a third-party settings guide rather than a controlled benchmark. On a desktop PC, begin at your display’s native resolution. On Steam Deck, begin at 1280×800. Use borderless windowed mode, launch a repeatable section of the game, and see whether the system can hold a 60-FPS target before touching other options. The guide discusses observed Maximum/On choices, but its available page does not establish a complete, independently verified setting-by-setting matrix, so those choices should not be treated as universal instructions.

Make one change at a time. If you alter resolution, display mode, a graphics option and a compatibility setting simultaneously, you cannot identify which change helped or hurt. Record the result in the same scene and under the same conditions.

Desktop baseline

  1. Set the game to your monitor’s native output resolution.
  2. Select borderless mode.
  3. Leave the remaining graphics options at their current defaults or the game’s higher-quality choices.
  4. Use a repeatable combat or traversal section and check whether frame delivery remains near 60 FPS.
  5. If performance is unstable, change only one setting, repeat the same route, and write down the result.

Steam Deck baseline

  1. Set the game to 1280×800, the Deck’s native panel resolution.
  2. Use borderless mode.
  3. Test the same type of scene more than once rather than judging performance from a menu or a quiet corridor.
  4. Keep notes about SteamOS version, Proton version and any frame-rate limiter you use.

These starting points are recommendations from the August 31, 2026 settings guide, not measurements performed across a defined set of PCs. A configuration that works on one graphics card, driver or display may not behave identically on another.

Can War in the North Legacy Edition run at 60 FPS or higher?

Yes, 60 FPS is an advertised capability, not a universal performance guarantee. The available coverage reports that Aspyr advertises 60-FPS gameplay, but no controlled, named benchmark with measured averages, lows, test scenes and system specifications was identified. Consequently, neither a 60-FPS average nor a particular minimum frame rate can be promised for every PC.

A short reading above 100 FPS should not be treated as a stable target. The same guidance presents 120 FPS as something to test on an individual system, not as an expected result for the recommended hardware tier. A high counter in an empty area also says little about frame pacing during combat, loading or effects-heavy scenes.

For useful comparisons, capture the display mode, output resolution, processor, graphics card, memory, operating system, graphics driver and, on Linux or SteamOS, the Proton or other compatibility-layer version. Include the scene tested and whether a cap or variable-refresh display was active. Without those details, “runs at 60” reports are difficult to reproduce.

What the official PC requirements actually say

Steam lists the following eligibility tiers, reproduced in the Hone settings guide. Both tiers specify Windows 11 64-bit, DirectX 12 and 25 GB of storage.

Tier Operating system Processor Memory Graphics DirectX Storage
Minimum Windows 11, 64-bit Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 8 GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290X Version 12 25 GB
Recommended Windows 11, 64-bit Intel Core i5-12400F or AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 16 GB RAM NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 6600 Version 12 25 GB

These are hardware and software eligibility references. Steam does not attach a resolution, graphics preset, average FPS, one-percent-low FPS, VRAM target or frame-pacing target to either tier. Calling the recommended list “1080p/60” or “4K/60” would add information that the requirements do not provide.

How to use the tiers when checking your PC

  • Compare your processor, memory and graphics card with the listed tier rather than using the tier as a performance guarantee.
  • If your graphics card is below the recommended model, expect to test resolution and quality settings more carefully; the list alone cannot predict the exact result.
  • A graphics upgrade may not cure a hitch caused by shader compilation, a driver, a compatibility layer, storage activity or a game-side issue.
  • Confirm practical compatibility for any upgrade, including power-supply capacity, case clearance and required connectors.

Resolution, refresh rate and frame pacing

Resolution is usually the first high-impact setting to test because it changes the number of pixels the graphics card must render. Native resolution gives the clearest image, while a lower output can provide more headroom. Change it only after recording a native-resolution result, and compare the same scene so the trade-off is measurable.

A 144 Hz or 165 Hz monitor does not make the game render at that rate. The display can refresh faster, but the game and system still have to produce consistent frames. Likewise, a counter that briefly reaches 120 FPS does not establish that 120 FPS is sustainable through combat, transitions or busy environments.

  • Contains two balanced armies – one Good, one Evil - led by powerful heroes

Frame pacing matters as much as the headline number. A fluctuating counter near 60 can feel less smooth than a lower but steady rate. If you use a frame limiter or variable-refresh display, record that setting in your notes; otherwise two apparently similar tests may be measuring different presentation behavior.

A repeatable troubleshooting method

Mixed reports make a controlled personal test more useful than copying an unverified preset. A Steam discussion opened on August 11, 2026 includes conflicting anecdotes: one Linux user described drops to roughly 3–4 FPS on a Ryzen 7 3700X with a Radeon RX 6800 after trying several display modes and Proton versions; another user reported Windows stutter; a later Windows commenter said the game ran without stutter at 144 FPS and suggested it might have been patched. These statements are individual experiences, not comparative testing, and the thread does not establish a common cause or universal fix (Steam discussion).

  1. Freeze the test conditions. Choose one save or repeatable route, close unnecessary background software, and keep the same resolution, display mode and frame cap.
  2. Record the environment. Note the CPU, GPU, RAM, operating system, driver, game build and display refresh rate. On Linux or SteamOS, include the Proton or other compatibility-layer version.
  3. Observe the symptom. Distinguish a consistently low frame rate from a hitch during loading, a pause when effects appear, a resolution-change problem or a network/multiplayer issue.
  4. Change one variable. Test borderless versus another available mode, or one resolution step, but not both at once.
  5. Repeat the route. Run the same section again and compare average behavior, visible hitching and frame-time consistency.
  6. Keep or revert the change. If the result is worse, restore the previous value before testing the next variable.

This process is diagnostic discipline, not a documented game-specific fix. It helps you produce evidence that another player can understand and reproduce.

What Patch 1 changed—and what it does not prove

The official Steam community page lists Patch 1 as live on September 15. Its notes report stability fixes, multiplayer-progression fixes, cinematics and asset-loading fixes, loading and inventory optimizations, and a borderless-window correction: when a pending resolution change expires, the game reverts to the previous resolution. The announcement also states, “Now Steam Deck Verified.” Read the full announcement on the official Steam community page.

  • A selection of both Good and Evil army lists and unit profiles to unleash your collection into battle
  • Includes over 150 unit profiles and 46 army lists

Those are patch-note claims, not a promise that every stutter, crash or compatibility problem has disappeared. If your system still hitches after updating, document the exact build and environment and apply the one-variable test above. Steam Deck Verified status indicates the developer’s stated verification result; it does not specify a universal frame rate, graphics preset or frame-time guarantee for every Deck session.

Legacy Edition context for performance expectations

The Legacy Edition is the same War in the North action RPG story rather than a new campaign or a ground-up remake, according to the vendor coverage summarized by PC Gamer. Its return to Steam included hot-swappable characters, refined enemy-target locking, interface improvements, autosave changes and bug fixes. The release context is described in PC Gamer’s August 11, 2026 report.

Those gameplay and quality-of-life changes explain why older reports about the original release may not map perfectly to the Legacy Edition. Use reports that identify the Legacy Edition build, platform and settings, and treat older frame-rate claims as historical context rather than a current benchmark.

When a graphics upgrade is the right next step

If your card is below Steam’s recommended RTX 2060 or RX 6600 class, a newer or faster GPU can be a rational option, but the requirements do not demonstrate that it will deliver a chosen resolution or FPS. Compare the GPU’s performance tier with your target output, then check the rest of the system.

  • Target: Decide whether you want native 1280×800 on a Deck, a desktop monitor’s native resolution, a locked 60 FPS or a higher experimental cap.
  • Compatibility: Verify power-supply wattage and connectors, case length and slot clearance, motherboard support and adequate airflow.
  • Balance: Check that the processor and memory are not substantially weaker than the graphics card for the games you play.
  • Evidence: Prefer tests that identify resolution, preset, driver, operating system and frame-time behavior. A requirements table alone cannot supply those measurements.

Do not buy a card solely to cure unexplained stutter before isolating display mode, drivers, compatibility-layer behavior and loading-related hitches. A faster GPU addresses rendering headroom; it cannot automatically fix every source of uneven frame delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Does Steam Deck Verified mean I should expect 60 FPS?

No. The official announcement says the game is now Steam Deck Verified, but the reviewed notes do not define a universal frame-rate or frame-pacing target. Start at 1280×800 and test your own repeatable scene.

Is 120 FPS a supported target?

It is reasonable to test on suitable hardware and a high-refresh display, but the available evidence does not establish 120 FPS as a universal result. Treat brief readings above 100 FPS as transient until a repeatable scene remains stable.
