The 2024 HarperCollins Deluxe Illustrated Boxed Set (ISBN 978-0-00-866943-0) contains the three volumes of The Lord of the Rings, not The Hobbit. Because “Lord of the Rings box set” is also used for several four-book and single-volume editions, check the ISBN and the exact list of books before buying.
What is in the 2024 Deluxe Illustrated Boxed Set?
The edition most often meant by the current “deluxe illustrated boxed set” wording is HarperCollins’ 2024 three-volume hardback set, ISBN 978-0-00-866943-0. HarperReach lists a release date of 10 October 2024 and 1,472 pages for the set. The books contain the complete Lord of the Rings text divided into the familiar three volumes: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
Alan Lee supplies more than fifty full-page colour paintings for this edition, according to the publisher’s product description. The books are housed in an illustrated slipcase. The listed presentation extras are:

Five editions that sellers may call a “Lord of the Rings box set”
The phrase is not a unique edition name. The following products have materially different contents, formats and illustration programs.

The table’s four-book editions are not interchangeable. In one, the extra book is The Hobbit; in another, it is a Reader’s Companion. The film tie-in set also includes The Hobbit, but its covers use film imagery rather than the illustrated presentation associated with the Alan Lee sets.

The Hobbit & The Lord of the Rings Illustrated Boxed Set — ISBN 978-0-00-837610-9
This is the straightforward choice for readers who want the complete core reading sequence in one purchase: The Hobbit followed by the three Lord of the Rings volumes. It is a four-book boxed gift set, and Alan Lee’s watercolour illustrations run throughout the books. Its four-book count is the quickest way to distinguish it from the 2024 deluxe three-volume set.
The title itself names both works, but marketplace listings can shorten titles or use “Lord of the Rings illustrated box set” as search language. The ISBN is therefore more reliable than a shortened title or a product photograph.
60th Anniversary Boxed Set — ISBN 978-0-00-758114-6
The 60th Anniversary edition also has four hardback volumes, but its fourth volume is not The Hobbit. It is The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion. That companion material makes this set the relevant option for readers who want commentary and reference material alongside the novel rather than an additional Tolkien story.
The edition’s visual identity draws on Tolkien’s unused 1950s jacket designs, which were reworked for the anniversary publication. Single-volume illustrated edition — ISBN 978-0-00-847128-6
This edition compresses the complete Lord of the Rings into one hardback. Its illustrations are by Tolkien himself: the product listing specifies 30 colour illustrations, maps and sketches. That makes it fundamentally different from the Alan Lee editions, even though both may be described as “illustrated.”
A one-volume format can suit readers who prefer one object on the shelf or want Tolkien’s own visual work. It does not provide the three-book handling of the deluxe set, and it is not a four-book set with The Hobbit or a Reader’s Companion.

Does the Lord of the Rings box set include The Hobbit?
Sometimes, but not always. The answer depends on the edition:

Therefore, “four books” alone does not answer the question. Identify what the fourth book is.
How to identify the correct edition in a listing
- Find the ISBN. Look in the bibliographic details, not only in the seller’s headline or cover photo. Match all 13 digits to the table above.
- Count the volumes. Three volumes usually indicates the 2024 deluxe Lord of the Rings-only set. Four volumes require a second check.
- Read the contents line. Confirm whether the listing names The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion, or only the complete trilogy in one volume.
- Check the illustrator. Alan Lee, Tolkien, and film-image covers identify different products and should not be treated as interchangeable descriptions.
- Check the extras. Sprayed edges, three removable art cards, two foldout maps and an illustrated slipcase belong to the publisher-described 2024 deluxe package.
- Resolve conflicting details with the ISBN. Seller photographs, shortened titles and reused promotional wording can make editions look alike. The ISBN is the strongest identifier among the supplied edition records.

Select the 60th Anniversary set if the additional volume you want is The Lord of the Rings: A Reader’s Companion. Its four-volume count should not be mistaken for a Hobbit-plus-trilogy set.

Select ISBN 978-0-00-847128-6 when the priority is a single hardback with Tolkien’s 30 colour illustrations, maps and sketches.
