The “Street Fighter movie curse” is a fair shorthand for two consecutive Hollywood live-action disappointments. The 1994 Street Fighter earned a lasting critical backlash, while 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li failed with critics and audiences. A third film, now being made by Capcom and Legendary, has a chance to change that record—but it cannot be called a success until it opens.

Why people call the live-action adaptations cursed

The 1994 film created the reputation

Street Fighter (1994) was the first Hollywood live-action adaptation of Capcom’s fighting-game series. Its reputation deteriorated well beyond ordinary mixed reviews. Film historian Leonard Maltin later described it as “one of the worst movies ever inspired by a video game.” That assessment became part of the film’s legacy, even though it established the property as a theatrical experiment for a major game franchise.

The 2009 Chun-Li film made the pattern worse

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li was the second Hollywood live-action film and was received even more harshly. Rotten Tomatoes recorded only 3% positive reviews from 59 critics, while Metacritic listed a score of 17 out of 100. The film also grossed $12.8 million worldwide against a reported $50 million budget, making its commercial performance as damaging as its reviews.

Rotten Tomatoes’ contemporary consensus summarized the problem this way: “The combination of a shallow plot and miscast performers renders Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li a perfectly forgettable video game adaptation.” Two films in a row therefore left audiences with a simple conclusion: the games’ popularity had not translated into a reliable live-action formula.

How the three Hollywood films compare

Film Game and character framework Critical reception Commercial result Production or franchise context
Street Fighter (1994) Live-action adaptation; the available record does not establish how closely its story follows the tournament structure. Harsh long-term reputation; Leonard Maltin called it one of the worst movies inspired by a video game. Not stated in the available record. First Hollywood live-action attempt.
Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009) Centered on Chun-Li, but its adaptation approach was judged shallow by the Rotten Tomatoes consensus. 3% positive from 59 Rotten Tomatoes reviews; 17/100 on Metacritic. $12.8 million worldwide against a $50 million budget. Second Hollywood live-action attempt; described as a critical and commercial failure.
Untitled Capcom/Legendary film (scheduled for 2026) Official premise places Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li in the World Warrior Tournament. Not yet available; the film has not opened. Not yet available. Capcom announced in 2025 that filming had commenced; Capcom and Legendary are jointly financing it.

What the new Street Fighter movie is about

A tournament story with the core trio

The official synopsis sets the film in 1993. Estranged fighters Ryu and Ken Masters are drawn back into combat when Chun-Li recruits them for the World Warrior Tournament. A conspiracy then forces the two former allies to confront each other and their pasts.

That setup uses one of the game series’ clearest narrative frameworks: a global tournament that brings rival fighters together. Keeping Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li at the center also gives the film three instantly recognizable anchors instead of treating the game’s roster as a collection of disconnected cameos.

Announced cast

Capcom named Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken and Callina Liang as Chun-Li. The announced ensemble also includes Joe Anoai, David Dastmalchian, Cody Rhodes, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Jason Momoa, among others. Character assignments for every member of the supporting cast have not been established in the supplied announcement.

Release and production status

Capcom announced in 2025 that filming had begun and listed October 16, 2026, as the theatrical release date. Legendary Entertainment and Capcom are jointly financing the project. Those facts show a substantial new production effort, but they do not provide evidence about the finished film’s quality, reviews or box office before release.

Why this attempt could reset the pattern

  • It starts with the tournament premise. The World Warrior Tournament directly reflects the competitive structure that defines the games.
  • It puts the best-known characters together. Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li form a clearer dramatic center than a story built around a single peripheral viewpoint.
  • Capcom is directly involved. Joint financing with Legendary gives the rights holder a formal production role, although involvement alone cannot guarantee a good adaptation.
  • The franchise has a large existing audience. Capcom reported more than 49 million cumulative Street Fighter units shipped worldwide as of December 31, 2022.

None of these factors breaks the curse in advance. They identify reasons for cautious optimism, not a review verdict. The film still has to turn recognizable characters and tournament imagery into a coherent story that works for players and newcomers.

Why Capcom continues to invest in the property

Capcom has said that film and television adaptations are intended to broaden awareness beyond the gaming audience and increase the value of its intellectual property. The reported 49-million-plus unit shipment total explains why another theatrical attempt remains commercially rational after two disappointing predecessors: the underlying series has a large, established fan base and continuing visibility.

Merchandise planned around the 2026 release

On February 2, 2026, Hasbro announced a licensing partnership with Legendary for Street Fighter action figures, toys and collectibles timed to the film’s October 16, 2026 theatrical release. The announcement confirms the product category and the intended timing, but it does not state the final retail assortment, launch schedule or any affiliate arrangement.

That merchandise strategy can help keep the characters visible beyond opening weekend, especially if the film introduces designs that audiences want to collect. It is supporting evidence of a broader franchise plan, not evidence that the movie itself will succeed.

How to judge whether the curse is finally broken

  1. Check story fidelity. Does the finished film use the tournament and rivalry framework promised in the synopsis, or merely borrow character names?
  2. Assess character treatment. Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li should have understandable motivations and relationships rather than functioning as references for longtime players.
  3. Separate reviews from fandom. The 2009 film’s 3% Rotten Tomatoes score and 17/100 Metacritic score show how severe the previous critical response was; the new film will need broad approval, not just opening-day curiosity.
  4. Look at sustained theatrical performance. A durable result requires more than a strong first weekend, particularly when a toy line and other franchise products depend on continued interest.
  5. Watch the audience beyond existing players. Capcom’s stated adaptation goal is broader awareness, so the decisive test is whether newcomers can follow and enjoy the film without prior game knowledge.

What can be said before release

The evidence supports calling the history a curse, but only as shorthand for two consecutive live-action failures—not as a permanent rule. The 2026 film has a more game-connected premise, direct Capcom participation and a release plan supported by new merchandise. Until audiences and critics see the finished movie, the most accurate conclusion is that the curse remains unbroken and the outcome is still unknown.
