The Wind Waker takes place in the Adult Era branch that follows Ocarina of Time. It is not part of the Child Era sequence that includes Majora’s Mask. Nintendo’s timeline places the flooding of Hyrule between Ocarina of Time and The Wind Waker, and then continues the same branch with Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks.
The Wind Waker’s exact place in the Zelda timeline
The simplest way to place The Wind Waker is:
- Ocarina of Time reaches its adult-ending period.
- Hyrule is flooded.
- The Wind Waker begins in the ocean-covered world that follows.
- Phantom Hourglass starts a few months after The Wind Waker.
- Spirit Tracks comes later, in a new Hyrule.
Nintendo’s official history separates the post–Ocarina of Time story into an Adult Era and a Child Era. The Wind Waker appears on the Adult Era side. Eiji Aonuma described the game as taking place 100 years after the ending in which Link was an adult. That interval is his stated explanation rather than a calendar date independently established by Nintendo’s displayed timeline.

Why Ocarina of Time creates two branches
Ocarina of Time is not simply followed by one uninterrupted line of sequels. Its ending produces two historical periods in Nintendo’s official presentation.
The adult-ending period
In the ending associated with adult Link, Link defeats Ganon while he is an adult. The sequence that remembers that period eventually leads to the Adult Era. The Wind Waker belongs here. Aonuma summarized the placement this way: “You could say that The Wind Waker takes place 100 years after the ending in which Link was an adult.”

This wording explains why The Wind Waker can refer to the Hero of Time without using the same incarnation of Link. The earlier hero is part of the world’s history, while the playable hero in The Wind Waker is a different Link living much later.
The child-ending period
After the adult events, Link returns to his childhood. Nintendo treats that result as a separate historical branch, the Child Era. Majora’s Mask is displayed on this side of the timeline, not alongside The Wind Waker.
Therefore, The Wind Waker and Majora’s Mask are not consecutive games in one branch. They both connect back to Ocarina of Time, but they follow different ending periods. Treating every Zelda game as a single linear chain obscures the specific branch Nintendo uses for The Wind Waker.

Nintendo’s history places the flooding of Hyrule before The Wind Waker. By the time the game opens, the familiar kingdom is no longer presented as a normal continuous landmass. Most of the world is ocean, with islands and settlements separated by open water.
The flood is a timeline event, not merely a visual change in the game’s setting. It explains why the world of The Wind Waker looks unlike the Hyrule explored in Ocarina of Time while still preserving that earlier game’s history. The exact in-world calendar date of the flood is not established by the available official timeline display, so it is more accurate to describe it as the transition between the Adult Era’s Ocarina period and The Wind Waker than to assign it a precise year.

Aonuma’s 100-year statement supplies the broad interval from Ocarina of Time’s adult-ending period to The Wind Waker. It does not provide a detailed year-by-year chronology for the flood or every event between the two games.
How The Wind Waker itself signals its place
The game’s opening gives players the context needed to understand the connection. Nintendo describes a small island “where the legend of the Hero of Time is being passed down.” That line makes the earlier Link a remembered figure rather than the protagonist of the new adventure.

A new Link, an inherited legend
The playable Link begins life on a small island and receives the traditional green outfit as part of his coming-of-age birthday. He is not introduced as the same person who traveled through time in Ocarina of Time. Instead, the world has retained a legend about that earlier hero, and the new Link is drawn into a crisis that echoes it.
This distinction resolves a common source of confusion: references to the Hero of Time do not mean The Wind Waker is replaying Ocarina of Time’s events or using the same Link. They establish historical continuity across generations.
Tetra and Aryll
On Link’s birthday, a monstrous bird carries off Tetra. Link helps rescue her, but his sister Aryll is then kidnapped. The personal rescue mission expands into a journey across the ocean.

These opening events show how the new story uses familiar Zelda themes while remaining a later chapter. The setting, characters and immediate objectives belong to The Wind Waker, while the Hero of Time survives as a story remembered by the island community.
The King of Red Lions and Ganondorf’s return
The King of Red Lions guides Link and explains that Ganondorf has returned and is kidnapping girls around the world. The explanation connects the new threat to the older history without requiring the player to treat the two Links as identical.
In timeline terms, the return of Ganondorf is part of the Adult Era continuation. The game’s premise assumes that the world already knows the earlier legend, then introduces a new Link who must confront the consequences of that history.
What follows The Wind Waker?
Phantom Hourglass
Phantom Hourglass is the immediate listed continuation. Nintendo says it begins “A few months after the adventures in the Wind Waker.” Link and Tetra set out in search of a new land, so the story picks up shortly after The Wind Waker rather than jumping to an unrelated branch.
The phrase “a few months” is the useful precision here. It establishes a short interval but does not specify an exact number of months or a calendar date.

Spirit Tracks
Nintendo’s timeline places Spirit Tracks later in the same continuing sequence. Its setting is a new Hyrule where the tracks that connect the land are disappearing. That description indicates a substantial change from The Wind Waker’s ocean world, but it remains downstream of the Adult Era sequence rather than switching to the Child Era.
The relevant order is therefore The Wind Waker, then Phantom Hourglass, then Spirit Tracks. Spirit Tracks is not a direct next-day sequel; it is the later chapter in a new Hyrule established after the earlier adventures.
Adult Era versus Child Era
Only two branches matter for answering where The Wind Waker fits. The following comparison uses Nintendo’s displayed branch placement and Aonuma’s explanation of the split.

Mistake: putting The Wind Waker directly after Majora’s Mask
Majora’s Mask is on Nintendo’s Child Era branch, while The Wind Waker is on the Adult Era branch. The two games share the broader Zelda universe but are not consecutive entries in one timeline.

Mistake: assuming the hero is the same Link
The Wind Waker follows a new Link. The opening’s reference to the Hero of Time is a legend passed down on the island, which is evidence of remembered history rather than proof that the protagonist is Ocarina of Time’s Link.
Mistake: treating the flood as an optional interpretation
Nintendo’s official history places Hyrule’s flooding before The Wind Waker. The ocean-covered setting is therefore part of the timeline’s stated sequence, not merely an explanation invented from the game’s art direction.
Mistake: turning “100 years” into a precise calendar
Aonuma gave the 100-year interval in a creator interview archived by Zelda Legends. The archive page does not establish the interview’s original publication date, and Nintendo’s displayed history does not provide an exact in-world calendar date for The Wind Waker. Use the figure as an attributed interval, not as a fully dated chronology.

A quick way to explain the placement to someone else
- Start with Ocarina of Time, because its ending creates the relevant split.
- Say that The Wind Waker follows the period in which Link was an adult, not the child-period branch.
- Place Hyrule’s flooding between that history and The Wind Waker.
- Explain that The Wind Waker introduces a new Link in a world where the Hero of Time is remembered as legend.
- Continue the branch with Phantom Hourglass a few months later, followed later by Spirit Tracks in a new Hyrule.
This five-step explanation preserves the important distinctions without pretending that every Zelda title belongs to one straight line.
Release context
Nintendo lists The Wind Waker as a GameCube release dated December 13, 2002. That release information identifies the original platform and date; it does not change the game’s later placement in the official historical sequence.
For anyone playing through this branch, the narrative order is Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. The Child Era games can be explored separately because they arise from the other Ocarina of Time outcome.
The timeline in one sentence
The Wind Waker is the Adult Era sequel to Ocarina of Time’s adult-ending period: after Hyrule is flooded, a new Link inherits the world’s legend, then continues into Phantom Hourglass and, later, Spirit Tracks.
