The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is Nintendo’s official adventure that established the series’ 3D format. That official status matters when comparing it with a ROM hack. Ocarina of Time has Nintendo-authored characters, locations, mechanics and narrative continuity. Its original release and the later Nintendo 3DS edition are defined products with known platform targets. Nintendo’s official pages identify Ocarina of Time 3D as a release for the Nintendo 3DS family; that does not mean the fan project is included with the 3DS game.
The original game’s role in the comparison
Ocarina of Time is both the reference point and the technical foundation for Sands of Time. Because the premise is reported rather than documented on a verified primary author page, treat details beyond that outline cautiously. The sources establish the broad alternate-timeline setup; they do not establish that Nintendo recognizes it, that it fits an official chronology, or that every plot detail reported by one outlet appears in every build.

A new soundtrack is among the reported additions. That points to an audio identity distinct from simply replaying Ocarina of Time’s original score. Common misconceptions to avoid
“Sands of Time is the next official Zelda game.”
No. The available descriptions identify it as a fan-made ROM hack. It should not be listed alongside Nintendo’s official sequels or treated as a numbered entry in the series.
“It is the same as Ocarina of Time with a new title.”
