There is no single English pronunciation established by the available Nintendo-related sources. In ordinary English, you will hear both “OCK-arina” and “OH-karina”. The first vowel often changes with a speaker’s accent, so neither version should be treated as Nintendo’s official ruling.
If you need one practical rendering, say OCK-uh-REE-nuh. If you naturally say OH-kuh-REE-nuh, that is also a recognizable English pronunciation. The game title refers to an ocarina, the small wind instrument Link uses for learned melodies.
The short answer: both “OCK” and “OH” are heard
The disputed word is ocarina, not Zelda or Time. A recent Nintendo Life feature contrasts the English forms OCK-arina and OH-karina. In a reader-friendly syllable guide, those can be rendered as OCK-uh-REE-nuh and OH-kuh-REE-nuh. These respellings are speaking aids, not a formal phonetic transcription.

The opening vowel is the part that varies most noticeably. Some speakers begin with a clear “ock” sound; others use an “oh” sound. The remaining syllables are close enough that listeners usually understand either version immediately when the subject is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Accent is the important qualification. English speakers do not all map the letter o to the same vowel, and the same person may alter it slightly in fast speech. A different vowel quality is not evidence that someone has failed to learn the title.
How to say each version
OCK-arina
- Start with “ock,” as in the beginning of “octopus.”
- Continue with a relaxed middle syllable, approximately “uh.”
- Say “REE” as the clearest part of the word.
- Finish with a light “nuh.”
Together, that gives an approximate OCK-uh-REE-nuh. Keep the word connected rather than making four sharply separated beats. This is the form many English speakers use when they read the spelling with a short initial vowel.
OH-karina
- Begin with “oh,” using the vowel in an ordinary spoken “oh.”
- Move through the same relaxed middle syllable.
- Say the “REE” portion clearly.
- End with the same light “nuh.”
The resulting approximation is OH-kuh-REE-nuh. The difference from the first version is concentrated at the beginning; it is not a different game title or a different instrument.

Capital letters in these examples only show where to place your attention. They do not establish an official stress rule, and the respellings should not be mistaken for a dictionary entry.

Why accents produce different first vowels
Written English gives readers a spelling but not one guaranteed spoken vowel. The letter o can be realized differently by speakers whose accents use different vowel systems. Even when two people aim for the same word, one may hear an “ock” onset while another produces an “oh” onset.
This is a normal accent difference, not a contest with a single winner. Gavin Lane, who wrote the Nintendo Life feature, puts the broader point this way: “if someone says a word differently from you, it doesn’t mean they’re necessarily wrong!” The sentence is an editorial observation about variation, not a Nintendo policy statement.
When discussing the game internationally, listeners may also adapt the vowel to their own accent. Trying to force a pronunciation that feels unnatural can make the word less intelligible, especially in a sentence. A clear, consistent version is more useful than an exaggerated attempt to imitate another accent.
Has Nintendo published an official English pronunciation?
The available material does not establish a definitive Nintendo-published English pronunciation guide for the title. Nintendo’s official announcements and product information identify the game and its ocarina melodies, but they do not provide a spoken English recording or a written ruling choosing “OCK” over “OH.”

That distinction matters. A fan poll, a magazine’s respelling, or a commentator’s preferred reading can document usage without becoming an official standard. Unless Nintendo supplies an explicit audio or pronunciation guide, descriptions such as “OCK-arina is the correct Nintendo pronunciation” go beyond the evidence.
For practical writing, describe the forms as alternatives: “The title is commonly pronounced either OCK-arina or OH-karina, depending on accent.” That wording tells readers what they will hear without claiming a corporate decision that has not been documented.
What the word means in the game
An ocarina is a wind instrument with a vessel-like body and finger holes. In the game, Link learns melodies and plays them to trigger actions, solve puzzles, travel, or interact with characters. The instrument is therefore part of the title’s story and mechanics, not an arbitrary fantasy term.
Nintendo’s announcement for the Switch 2 version says players can play or hum one of Link’s learned ocarina melodies. That feature confirms the instrument’s continuing role in the game’s context, but it still does not specify how Nintendo wants English speakers to say the word aloud.
Nintendo’s official Switch 2 listing gives a release date of November 5, 2026. The date was still upcoming at the October 13, 2026 research timestamp, so references to the Switch 2 version should not imply that it was already available at that point. The release information is relevant background for the instrument, not evidence for either pronunciation.
Which pronunciation should you use?
When speaking casually
Use the version that is natural in your accent. If your friends already use “OCK-arina,” matching that form avoids an unnecessary correction. If your group says “OH-karina,” the same principle applies. Both are recognizable in conversations about the game.
When introducing the game to someone new
Give both forms once: “It’s Ocarina of Time—I say OCK-arina, but you’ll also hear OH-karina.” This prevents confusion when the listener encounters the alternate vowel in a video, stream, podcast, or conversation.
When writing a pronunciation guide
Use a plain-English approximation and label it as such. For example: Ocarina (OCK-uh-REE-nuh; also heard as OH-kuh-REE-nuh). Avoid presenting either respelling inside quotation marks that imply an official Nintendo notation.

What the Nintendo Life poll can and cannot tell you
Nintendo Life’s 2026 feature asked readers how to say “ocarina” and reported 5,818 responses for that poll. The same feature reported 5,729 responses for “Navi” and 5,617 responses for “Saria.” The exposed material does not include the percentage split or identify a winning option.
Those totals show that pronunciation is a lively community question, not that one answer has been scientifically established. An online publication poll is self-selected: people who choose to visit the page and vote may not represent all players, all English accents, or speakers in other languages. The counts should therefore be read as participation figures, not as a language survey.
There is also no independent, representative linguistic survey in the available material that measures how English speakers pronounce the word. Claims such as “most players say X” require percentages and a defined sample; neither is established here.

Related names in the same pronunciation debate
The Nintendo Life feature also invites readers to discuss Navi, Saria, and Kaepora Gaebora. Those names generate their own disagreements because spelling can suggest more than one syllable pattern or vowel choice.
The available passage does not provide poll percentages or a complete phonetic transcription for those names. Treat any magazine respelling as an editorial approximation, just as with ocarina. If a group uses different versions, ask which form each speaker prefers rather than presenting an unverified “official” answer.
Common mistakes to avoid

- If your audience is international or mixed-accent, add the alternate: “OCK-arina, also commonly OH-karina.”
- Keep the rest of the title unchanged: “of Time” follows the instrument name.
- Do not spend more time policing the vowel than discussing the game, unless pronunciation itself is the topic.
This approach makes your speech understandable while acknowledging the evidence. It also prevents viewers or students from assuming that a familiar alternative is a mistake.
