The fastest-moving part of the public attack surface is AI software: Censys observed 164,088 internet-exposed AI-related IP addresses in October 2025 and 267,915 in July 2026, a 63% increase. Older business software and industrial-control systems (ICS) changed far more slowly, leaving defenders with two different jobs: rapidly discover new AI deployments, while steadily identifying owners and removing long-lived legacy and industrial exposures.
These findings come from Censys data reported by Help Net Security on October 15, 2026: “The internet’s attack surface moves at very different speeds.”
Why exposure speed changes the security response
An internet-facing service can become risky through rapid expansion, slow patching, unclear ownership, or a combination of all three. AI tools are appearing on reachable addresses quickly, so an inventory that was accurate weeks ago may already be incomplete. By contrast, old file-transfer, collaboration and reporting servers can remain online for years after their owners stop maintaining them. ICS adds a separate problem: the address may belong to a mobile carrier rather than the company operating the equipment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsExposure counts are observations of hosts or IP addresses visible to Censys scans, not a count of confirmed compromises. They are still useful because they show where discovery, ownership and remediation work will accumulate.

AI exposure grew 63% in nine months
Growth covered 44 products
Censys recorded 164,088 publicly exposed AI-related IP addresses in October 2025 and 267,915 in July 2026. That is a 63% increase across a set of 44 products. The total combines many kinds of software, so the figure should be read as a measure of internet-visible AI-related deployments, not as a count of identical applications.
n8n combines scale with high-severity exposure
Workflow-automation platform n8n accounted for 113,926 exposed hosts. Among n8n servers that reported a version, 76.1% were running a release in the affected range of at least one vulnerability scored 9.0 or higher. These systems can hold credentials for the services their workflows connect to, which means an exposed workflow server may provide access beyond the host itself.
For an organization using n8n, inventory should therefore capture the server’s public address, exact version, connected credentials, administrative users and downstream services. Removing internet access without rotating those credentials can leave a separate compromise path in place.

OpenClaw shows how quickly a new product can appear
OpenClaw’s first release with a control panel shipped on January 5, 2026. Censys saw two exposed panels six days later and 85,478 by April 7. The sequence illustrates why normal quarterly asset reviews are not enough for newly adopted software: a product can move from launch to widespread public exposure in a single quarter.
Legacy versions remain online for years
Oldest-version cohorts barely moved
Censys tracked the oldest-version groups for Telerik Report Server, Jenkins, Cleo MFT and Microsoft SharePoint Server from January 2024 through May 2026. In each case, the group’s share changed by about one percentage point or less.
| Product group | Observed pattern | Likely operational implication |
|---|---|---|
| Telerik Report Server | Oldest-version share changed by about one percentage point or less | Some exposed instances may be abandoned or outside routine upgrade processes |
| Jenkins | Oldest-version share changed by about one percentage point or less | Persistent build infrastructure needs ownership and lifecycle tracking |
| Cleo MFT | Oldest-version share changed by about one percentage point or less overall | Critical exploitation can change upgrade behavior abruptly |
| Microsoft SharePoint Server | Oldest-version share changed by about one percentage point or less | Long-lived collaboration servers require continuous inventory |
A stable oldest-version share does not prove that every server is abandoned, but it is consistent with instances that no team is actively upgrading. Those systems should be assigned an owner, brought behind access controls or retired rather than left in an unknown state.

Routine upgrades are different from exploitation-driven changes
Exposed Jenkins hosts upgraded at roughly 5% to 9% per month, with little visible change around vulnerability disclosures. Cleo MFT hosts moved to newer versions at a median rate of 1.9% per month until two critical flaws were added to CISA’s catalog of actively exploited vulnerabilities and the Cl0p ransomware group claimed attacks. By January 2025, 63% of returning Cleo hosts had moved to a newer version.

The lesson is operational: ordinary patch programs may produce gradual movement, while credible exploitation can trigger a rapid but uneven response. Teams should not wait for public attacks before assigning owners and preparing upgrade or shutdown plans.
ICS exposure is sizeable and difficult to attribute
Host counts rose modestly
Censys counted about 129,000 hosts running ICS services in 2024 and about 134,000 in early 2026. The increase is much slower than the AI growth rate, but the risk is harder to manage because these systems may control physical processes and often sit at remote sites.

Carrier registration can hide the operator
Roughly 70% of exposed ICS hosts were on consumer or mobile networks, often using cellular modems. Registration records on those networks commonly identify the carrier rather than the company operating the equipment. That makes notification, ownership tracing and coordinated patching substantially harder than for a directly attributable enterprise address.
Verizon’s cellular network alone contained 10% of exposed ICS hosts and 27.5% of exposed human-machine interfaces (HMIs), the screens used to control equipment. A carrier-level contact may be able to identify the subscriber, but it is not necessarily the party able to patch the controller or change the plant’s configuration.

Ordinary IT services can be the first foothold
More than 80% of exposed ICS hosts also ran a conventional IT service such as HTTP or SSH. An attacker may therefore begin with web or remote-shell probing without understanding the industrial protocol. Defenders should close unnecessary management services, restrict access through private networks or allowlists, and treat every internet-facing HMI as a high-priority asset even when the underlying control system is isolated from other plant networks.

Threat-infrastructure geography depends on the threat type
Censys measured different country patterns between October 2025 and June 2026 depending on whether the infrastructure was host-based or web-based.
| Infrastructure category | China | United States | What the comparison means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Host-based threat infrastructure, including command-and-control servers | 36.5% | 16.8% | China hosted the larger observed share |
| Web-based threats, such as phishing pages | 20.9% | 45.5% | The United States hosted the larger observed share |
Country totals are not a safe proxy for attacker nationality or victim location. Hosting, cloud distribution, compromised machines and takedown practices can all affect where infrastructure appears. The useful distinction is between the infrastructure type being measured and the geography in which it was observed.
How to prioritize an internet-exposure program
- Discover continuously. Re-scan public address space and cloud inventories frequently enough to catch newly deployed AI panels and workflow servers. Record product, version, protocol, hostname, provider and first-seen date.
- Rank by exposure plus consequence. Put internet-facing administrative panels, systems with credentials and HMIs ahead of low-impact public services. A vulnerable n8n server may expose connected credentials; an HMI may affect physical operations.
- Trace ownership. For enterprise ranges, map each address to a business owner. For consumer or mobile networks, work through the carrier and subscriber records rather than assuming the carrier operates the ICS equipment.
- Act on known exploitation. When a flaw enters CISA’s actively exploited catalog or credible attacks are reported, accelerate upgrades, isolate the service, rotate credentials and monitor for persistence instead of relying on the normal monthly patch rate.
- Remove what cannot be maintained. Retire abandoned legacy instances, block direct internet access to systems that must remain, and document exceptions with an owner and expiration date.
- Measure movement, not just totals. Track newly exposed assets, version changes, ownership resolution and time to remediation separately. A falling total can hide a new vulnerable product wave, while a stable total can conceal years of unresolved legacy systems.
What the figures say about risk
AI exposure is a velocity problem: products can reach tens of thousands of public hosts soon after release, and a large share may run vulnerable versions. Legacy software is a persistence problem: the oldest instances barely move unless a strong operational trigger forces action. ICS is an attribution problem: the systems are visible, but the records needed to reach their operators are often held by a network carrier. Effective defense requires all three responses at once—rapid discovery for new deployments, patient ownership work for old assets and specialized coordination for industrial systems.

Bottom line
The public attack surface is not changing at one speed. Treat fast-growing AI deployments as a continuous-discovery and credential-protection emergency; treat legacy servers as an ownership and retirement backlog; and treat exposed ICS on mobile networks as a notification and safety challenge. The country hosting an observed threat also depends on whether the threat is host-based or web-based, so geography must be interpreted alongside infrastructure type.
