Echoes of Sekigahara, the downloadable expansion for Ghost of Yotei, is worth playing if you want more of Atsu’s backstory and the game’s excellent combat. It is less convincing as a major expansion: the campaign is compact, revisits the past instead of pushing the main plot forward, and offers a smaller world than Iki Island. Its real value is retrospective. By returning to Atsu’s earlier life and the Battle of Sekigahara, the DLC shows how strong the core game’s combat, presentation and atmosphere remain—and how much its main story benefits from this added context.

What Echoes of Sekigahara actually adds

Echoes of Sekigahara is built around Atsu’s past, particularly the Battle of Sekigahara, rather than a large new chapter set after the events of the main campaign. That decision explains both the expansion’s strengths and its limitations. You learn more about the person Atsu was before becoming the Ghost, but the story does not deliver the sense of forward momentum associated with a full sequel-sized continuation.

The expansion introduces a smaller region with its own activities and combat encounters. Its additions include bounties, merchants, new enemy types, traps, massive weapons and a three-arrow auto-targeting ability. These systems give experienced players new ways to approach fights without replacing the swordplay and stealth loop that defines the main game.

GamesRadar+ reviewer Rollin Bishop described the result as “decidedly obsessed with the past” for a new expansion. That criticism is fair if you expected a broad new act or a major change to Atsu’s present-day goals. The same review also suggested that simply being reminded “of how cool it is to be Atsu” gives the content value.

Ghost of Yōtei PS5
  • Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
  • Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
  • An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
  • Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.

How long is Echoes of Sekigahara?

VGC estimates approximately five hours for the main expansion story. Side missions, bounties and other optional activities add several more hours, depending on how thoroughly you explore the new region.

Content Estimated time or scope What that means
Main Echoes of Sekigahara story About five hours A focused campaign centered on Atsu’s past and Sekigahara
Side missions and bounties Several additional hours Optional exploration and combat content beyond the critical path
Most Wanted mode Not stated A separate roguelike activity with repeatable waves and progression

That runtime makes the expansion substantially smaller in narrative scale than a full story region. It can still be a worthwhile return for players who want to spend more time with the combat and characters, but it is not structured as a long replacement for the main game.

What does Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition include?

The Complete Edition includes Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted, a separate roguelike mode. Most Wanted is organized around waves of enemies, progression currency and multiple playable characters, including Jin Sakai.

Does the DLC improve Atsu’s story?

Yes, if “improve” means adding essential context rather than changing the direction of the main plot. Echoes of Sekigahara shows more of Atsu’s pre-Ghost life and gives emotional weight to decisions and relationships that can otherwise feel underexplained. The flashbacks are not just optional historical decoration; they clarify why Atsu behaves as she does in the main campaign.

VGC reviewer Jordan Middler gave the expansion a 4/5 review and wrote: “The highest praise I can give Echoes of Sekigahara is that the main story of Ghost of Yotei is weaker without these sections.” That is a stronger endorsement of the writing’s importance than of the expansion’s size. The DLC may feel slight on its own while still making the base narrative more complete.

  • Battle against over 50 players simultaneously in a massive multiplayer playground.
  • Compete in an all-out mass start race—collide, grind, and fight your way to the finish
  • Customize your character to show off your style to your friends or show up the competition.
  • Bike, ski, snowboard, or wingsuit through a seamless open world in Career mode or multiplayer events.
  • Go wild on the heights of iconic US national parks like Yosemite, Zion, and Bryce Canyon.

The trade-off is that a story centered on the past can reduce urgency in the present. If you primarily want Atsu’s next major objective, new political stakes or a dramatically larger map, the expansion may seem like a detour.

Echoes of Sekigahara versus Iki Island

Iki Island is the closer comparison for players deciding whether this is a substantial expansion. Both add story, exploration and combat to a samurai adventure, but they serve different narrative purposes.

Category Echoes of Sekigahara Iki Island
Story scale Compact, focused campaign of about five hours, plus optional activities Larger expansion-scale adventure
Map Smaller new region Broader island setting with a more extensive exploration footprint
Narrative function Revisits Atsu’s past and the Battle of Sekigahara; adds context to her pre-Ghost life Expands the protagonist’s current journey with a new island conflict
Combat additions Massive weapons, traps, new enemies and three-arrow auto-targeting Different expansion-specific encounters and activities tied to its island setting
Best for Players who want character context and a concentrated return to the core combat Players seeking a broader new territory and a more substantial side adventure

On scale alone, Echoes of Sekigahara is the smaller release. Its advantage is specificity: it fills in Atsu’s history in a way that a geographically larger expansion might not.

Why the DLC still makes the main game feel better

Echoes of Sekigahara repeatedly sends you back to the fundamentals that made Ghost of Yotei effective: readable enemy patterns, satisfying weapon impact, deliberate stealth choices and cinematic environments. The new traps, heavy weapons and auto-targeting ability add variety, but the expansion does not need to reinvent the combat to demonstrate its quality.

The contrast also exposes the base game’s strongest achievement. A short, backward-looking expansion can feel underpowered as a standalone product because the original game established such a compelling world and protagonist. After several hours with the DLC, returning to the main campaign can feel less like abandoning new content and more like recognizing why the original structure works: exploration, combat and atmosphere reinforce Atsu’s identity instead of merely surrounding it.

Lower your expectations if you want:

  • A sequel-sized continuation of Atsu’s present-day story
  • A map and campaign comparable in scale to a major island expansion
  • A dramatic reinvention of the combat system

VGC called Ghost of Yotei Complete Edition “a perfect excuse to return to Atsu’s story,” while GamesRadar+ focused on the expansion’s lack of substantial narrative progression. Those views are not mutually exclusive: the package can be worthwhile for context and atmosphere even when it falls short as a large-scale continuation.

What the reviews establish

VGC published its review on October 1, 2026, awarded the Complete Edition 4/5 and reported the approximate five-hour main-story length. GamesRadar+ published its opinion article on October 15, 2026, emphasizing the expansion’s backward-looking structure and modest scale.
