For most beginners, The Forest is easier in multiplayer co-op. A group can divide gathering, construction, combat, exploration and rescue, so one mistake does not always end an encounter. Singleplayer is usually harder to manage and more frightening because one person carries every responsibility. Multiplayer still has its own balancing and enemy pressure, so it is not simply an easier difficulty setting.

Quick answer: multiplayer is easier to manage, solo is more intense

The practical difference is workload. In a solo game, you must collect resources, build shelter, watch for threats, learn the map, fight, recover from mistakes and keep your survival needs under control. In co-op, those jobs can be shared. One player can gather while another builds, a third watches the perimeter and a fourth explores.

That advantage does not mean every fight is easier. The game applies multiplayer-specific balancing, and the host’s settings can affect enemy pressure and other survival systems. A coordinated group can handle more problems at once, but an inexperienced or disorganized group can create new problems of its own.

Question Singleplayer Multiplayer co-op
Who handles the work? One player gathers, builds, fights, explores and manages survival. Players can divide jobs and cover one another.
What happens after a mistake? A bad engagement can end quickly because no teammate is present. Teammates can distract enemies, revive or assist one another, and attack from several angles.
Enemy pressure Uses the solo baseline. Multiplayer balancing can change enemy frequency or pressure; host settings matter.
Horror and pacing Quiet, isolated and self-paced, which generally increases tension. Conversation and shared activity reduce isolation, although caves and attacks can remain frightening.
Story and exploration Uninterrupted personal pace. Discoveries and progress can be discussed and shared immediately.
Reliability No scheduling or connection dependency. Depends on friends being available and cooperating.

What “easier” means in The Forest

Players use “easy” to describe several different experiences. Separating them makes the choice clearer:

  • Less fear: company and conversation make isolation less oppressive.
  • Lower mechanical difficulty: enemies may behave differently in a multiplayer session, so co-op is not guaranteed to reduce pressure.
  • More reliable access: solo play does not depend on anyone else’s schedule or connection.

Multiplayer is strongest on the first three points. Singleplayer can be preferable on the last point, and it is deliberately stronger if your idea of “better” means solitude and sustained horror rather than convenience.

Why co-op usually feels easier

Jobs can be divided instead of repeated by one person

The largest advantage is parallel work. A solo player must stop one activity to perform another: gathering delays construction, construction delays exploration, and fighting interrupts both. In a group, these activities can happen at the same time. This does not remove the need to collect resources or make decisions; it reduces the amount any one player must monitor at once.

A simple division of responsibility is enough to make an early session more manageable:

  • One player prioritizes gathering the materials the group needs.
  • One player lays out and expands the shelter or base.
  • One player scouts nearby areas and reports threats or useful discoveries.
  • One player stays ready to support the group during attacks or rescue attempts.

These are flexible roles, not permanent classes. Rotating them prevents one person from becoming the only builder, fighter or navigator.

Several players can change the shape of a fight

In solo play, every enemy is your problem at the same time. In co-op, teammates can distract enemies, approach from different angles and help a player who is under pressure. The practical benefit is not that enemies disappear; it is that the group has more options when an encounter goes wrong.

Combat recovery is especially important for beginners. A solo mistake can end an encounter quickly because no teammate is present. In multiplayer, another player may assist or revive you, giving the group an opportunity to recover instead of restarting the situation. That safety net lets new players learn enemy behavior without treating every failure as a total loss.

Learning is less punishing when knowledge is shared

The developers have said that players enjoy sharing gameplay experiences and watching other people’s playthroughs. Co-op naturally supports that kind of learning: one person can explain a system while others try it, compare discoveries and decide where to go next. A newcomer does not have to uncover every process alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Shared learning is most useful when the group agrees on a pace. An experienced player who rushes ahead can make the game confusing rather than easier. Let the least experienced member ask questions, handle some construction and lead portions of the exploration.

Building and base defense benefit from more hands

Construction is easier to organize when one player can place or plan structures while others collect what is needed. During an attack, the same base can be watched from more than one position. This reduces the chance that a single player must abandon construction, storage or another task every time danger appears.

The benefit depends on communication. If every player builds in a different direction or spends materials without telling the group, co-op can consume resources faster and create a less coherent base than a careful solo player would make.

Why multiplayer is not automatically easy

Enemy pressure is balanced for multiplayer

The official game-mode reference documents multiplayer balance adjustments and notes that game options can affect enemy behavior and pressure. A multiplayer session therefore should not be treated as the solo game with extra helpers and no trade-offs. Enemy frequency or pressure can differ, and the host controls settings that may affect the experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no authoritative published statistic showing that co-op players die less often, finish faster or complete the game at a higher rate. The conclusion that multiplayer is easier is a practical comparison based on the abilities co-op provides, not a measured win-rate claim.

Coordination becomes another survival task

Groups need to communicate where they are going, what they are building and when they are retreating. Splitting up can make exploration faster, but it also makes rescue and navigation harder. A group that ignores messages or leaves one player behind may lose the very advantage co-op provides.

Agree on a few basic signals before starting:

  • Call out when you are leaving the base and where you are heading.
  • Tell the group when you are low on health or supplies.
  • Choose a meeting point for anyone who becomes separated.
  • Decide who will return for a downed teammate and who will continue securing the area.

Availability and connection matter

Singleplayer is always ready when you are. Multiplayer requires a host, available friends and a willingness to cooperate. If your group plays irregularly, a solo save may provide a more consistent way to learn the systems. A co-op save is most useful when the same players return often enough to remember the base, supplies and current goals.

More players can make the experience noisier and less focused

Conversation, jokes and competing decisions reduce the isolation that gives The Forest its horror. That can be a benefit if you want a less frightening introduction, but it can also make story moments and environmental details easier to miss. A group should decide whether it wants a social survival session or a focused exploration of the game’s atmosphere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why singleplayer can be the harder—and scarier—choice

Solo play concentrates every obligation on one character. You cannot delegate gathering while you explore, ask someone else to guard a structure or rely on a teammate to interrupt an enemy. Each decision has a larger opportunity cost because time spent on one task is time not spent on another.

That concentration also creates the strongest horror tension. Quiet travel, dark and cramped environments, environmental hazards and encounters with enemies are experienced without conversation or backup. You choose the pace, but you also absorb every pause and every uncertainty. The game’s atmosphere has more room to work when no one is talking over it.

Singleplayer has meaningful advantages beyond fear:

How the difficulty modes change the decision

The Forest offers Peaceful, Normal, Hard, Hard Survival and Creative modes. The official game-mode reference says these choices can change difficulty, resource density, survival effects, animal respawn rates and enemy behavior. Some multiplayer options must be enabled by the host.

Mode Best fit How to use it for this decision
Peaceful Learning construction and crafting without enemy pressure. Useful for a first look at systems, but it does not represent the normal horror-survival experience.
Normal Most new players and mixed-experience groups. The recommended standard mode; a sensible starting point for co-op or solo.
Hard Players who already understand the core systems and want more pressure. Choose after the group is comfortable sharing tasks and recovering from mistakes.
Hard Survival Players seeking a demanding survival challenge. Not the best first test of whether multiplayer is easier, because the mode itself raises the stakes.
Creative Players focused on building and experimentation. Useful for construction practice rather than judging combat or horror difficulty.

For an inexperienced group, start on Normal. Use Peaceful when the immediate goal is learning construction and crafting without enemy pressure, not when you want to evaluate the full survival experience.

Should you play solo first?

Start in multiplayer when learning efficiency matters most

Choose co-op first if your priority is understanding the systems with help, building efficiently, sharing danger or reducing the amount of gathering and base defense you must handle alone. This is particularly suitable for a group in which at least one player is comfortable explaining the basics without taking every decision away from everyone else.

An eight-player co-op session is supported, but a large session is not automatically the easiest. More players create more possible roles, while also requiring more coordination. A smaller group that communicates clearly may be easier for a beginner to follow than a full session in which everyone moves independently.

Start in singleplayer when atmosphere and control matter most

Choose solo first if you want maximum isolation, a slower self-directed pace or the strongest horror tension. It is also a good choice if your schedule makes regular group sessions unreliable. You will carry more work, but you will learn the game’s rhythm without having to match another player’s route or speed.

Use a two-stage approach if you want both experiences

A practical compromise is to begin with a short Normal co-op session to learn the basic survival loop, then start a separate solo save when you understand the controls and want a more intense story and horror experience. Keeping the saves separate prevents a heavily assisted group progression from determining the pace of your solo exploration.

A beginner-friendly multiplayer plan

  1. Choose a host and a standard mode. Have the host create the session on Normal unless the group specifically wants construction practice in Peaceful. The host is responsible for settings that affect the session.
  2. Set one shared objective. Decide whether the first outing is for a shelter, supplies, scouting or learning. A single objective prevents four players from pursuing unrelated plans.
  3. Assign temporary jobs. Give gathering, building, scouting and security to different players, then rotate after the first task so everyone learns the systems.
  4. Keep the group informed. Announce departures, destinations, threats and low supplies. Make a meeting point for separated players.
  5. Use the recovery advantage deliberately. If someone is under attack or needs help, one player can distract or engage the threat while another assists. Do not scatter the entire group without saying where you are going.
  6. Review the session before raising difficulty. Move to Hard only after the group can gather, build, communicate and recover without confusion. Hard Survival should be a deliberate challenge, not the default test of a first session.

A beginner-friendly solo plan

  1. Begin on Normal. It is the recommended standard mode and gives you a reference point before you consider harder settings.
  2. Plan each outing around one priority. Decide whether you are gathering, building, scouting or exploring. Trying to complete every task on one trip increases exposure and makes mistakes harder to recover from.
  3. Leave yourself a retreat option. Because no teammate can distract an enemy or assist you, avoid turning every discovery into a fight. Return to safety when the risk is no longer worth the information or resources.
  4. Learn systems at your own pace. Pause to understand crafting and construction rather than copying a faster player’s choices. The purpose of solo practice is to build judgment, not merely to progress.
  5. Raise difficulty only after the routine feels stable. Hard and Hard Survival are more useful once you can manage your basic workload without relying on outside help.

Which mode is scarier?

Singleplayer is generally scarier because it preserves isolation, quiet and uncertainty. You have no teammate to confirm what you saw, cover a route or talk through a plan. Dark, cramped environments and environmental hazards therefore occupy more of your attention.

Multiplayer reduces isolation but does not remove danger. Caves and attacks can still be tense, especially when the group is separated or trying to rescue someone. The fear changes from “I am alone” to “we may not get everyone out,” which some players find equally compelling.

What the developers intended for co-op

Endnight has explained that the project originally focused on a single-player-only experience, then added multiplayer after fans encouraged the team to implement it. The developers have also said they discussed player-versus-player play but felt The Forest worked better as a friendly co-op game.

That history helps explain the design choice: multiplayer is built around sharing gameplay experiences rather than turning the survival game into a competitive mode. Co-op supports the same core survival and horror setting while giving players more ways to divide work and respond to danger together.

What is not known

No authoritative published comparison establishes completion rates, death counts, enemy totals or time-to-finish for solo versus multiplayer. It would be misleading to claim that one mode has a measured percentage advantage. The recommendation for co-op beginners rests on documented cooperative abilities—shared tasks, assistance and recovery—alongside the documented multiplayer balancing.

Your result will also depend on group behavior, host settings, chosen difficulty and whether you value atmosphere more than efficiency. Those variables are why two players can report opposite experiences while both describing the game accurately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision

Pick multiplayer on Normal if “easier” means less individual workload, faster learning and better recovery when something goes wrong. Pick singleplayer on Normal if you want complete control, uninterrupted exploration and the strongest sense of isolation. Use Peaceful or Creative for focused construction practice, and reserve Hard or Hard Survival for players who already understand the survival loop.

The simplest rule is to match the mode to the experience you want: co-op makes survival tasks more manageable, while solo makes the horror and responsibility more concentrated.
