There is no published, authoritative RAM or CPU requirement for a dedicated The Forest server. Steam’s figures—4 GB of RAM, an Intel Dual-Core 2.4 GHz processor at minimum, and a quad-core processor recommended—describe the game client, not the server process. Treating them as server specifications can lead to an undersized or unnecessarily expensive machine.
A dedicated-server tool does exist for Windows. A community setup guide updated January 23, 2019 (labelled game version v1.07) documents installation, configuration, an eight-player default, and TCP/UDP ports 8766, 27015 and 27016. Use those instructions as a starting point, then validate performance and connectivity on the exact version you intend to run.
What the published system requirements actually mean
The Steam store page lists requirements for launching and playing The Forest as a client. It does not present a sizing table for the dedicated-server executable. The distinction matters because a client renders a 3D world and accepts local input, while a server maintains world state, simulation, networking and save data for connected players.

Therefore, do not buy a RAM kit, processor or complete PC solely because it meets the Steam client row. No reviewed source supplies a server RAM baseline, CPU model, benchmark, supported player-to-resource ratio or official sizing calculator.

Can you run a dedicated server?
Yes. The dedicated-server application is distributed as a separate tool rather than as the ordinary game client. SteamDB, a third-party database, records a Windows tool with the executable TheForestDedicatedServer.exe. SteamDB does not publish resource requirements, so its listing confirms the software’s identity and platform—not the hardware you need.
The community guide by Survivalist and collaborators says, “This guide explains how to host the newly added Dedicated Servers!” Its page was updated January 23, 2019 and labels the instructions “Game version: v1.07.” That age is important: menu names, launch behavior or networking details may differ in a later build. Use the guide for the documented workflow, but check every step against the version currently installed on your machine.

RAM
No authoritative source in the available material states how much memory the server process consumes at idle, during world saving or with eight connected players. The 4 GB Steam figure cannot be converted into a server recommendation. A server may have different memory behavior because it does not render the client scene, yet it must retain simulation and networking state for every player.
The defensible way to size memory is empirical:
- Install the dedicated tool on a machine you already control instead of purchasing hardware from the client requirement alone.
- Run the world with the player count and mods (if any) you actually intend to use.
- Record the server process and total-system memory in Windows Task Manager during startup, normal play, travel between areas and save operations.
- Repeat the observation with your busiest expected session and leave headroom for Windows, security software, logs and other services.
- If memory usage keeps increasing, investigate a leak, excessive logging or an incompatible build before adding hardware.
This produces a measurement for your version and workload. It is more reliable than copying a number from the client page.

CPU
The client listing’s dual-core 2.4 GHz minimum and quad-core recommendation are likewise not server limits. They do not reveal how many server threads are used, whether clock speed or core count matters more, or how CPU demand changes with player activity. No published benchmark in the supplied sources establishes a minimum processor.
Monitor per-process CPU use while players join, build, fight, move through the world and trigger saves. Look for sustained saturation and rising tick or response delays rather than a brief spike at launch. If the server is CPU-bound, close unrelated workloads, move the process to a less busy machine or test a faster processor; do not infer a specific model from the game-client recommendation.
Storage and operating system
The 5 GB Steam value is the client’s available-space requirement. A server also needs room for the operating system, the tool, saves, logs and backups, but the reviewed material does not quantify those items. SteamDB identifies the dedicated tool as Windows software. Keep working space available and back up saves separately; the exact footprint depends on your installed build and how many worlds and logs you retain.
Network ports and player limits
The community guide documents these defaults. It describes them as TCP/UDP access, so create rules for both protocols unless your current version’s documentation says otherwise.

The same guide gives a default maximum of eight players. That is a configuration value, not a performance benchmark or a promise that every machine can serve eight people smoothly.
Router and firewall checklist
- Assign the host PC a stable address on your local network, preferably with a DHCP reservation, so forwarding rules do not point to a changing address.
- In the router’s port-forwarding page, create entries for 8766, 27015 and 27016 to that host, selecting both TCP and UDP as documented.
- Allow
TheForestDedicatedServer.exethrough Windows Firewall on the network profiles you use. If Windows asks when the program first starts, verify the path before approving. - Check whether your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT. If inbound forwarding cannot reach your router, a local rule alone will not make the server public.
- Test from outside your home network. A successful local connection does not prove that Internet players can reach the forwarded ports.
Opening ports exposes a service to the Internet. Limit rules to the required ports, keep Windows and the server tool updated, and remove the forwarding entries when you stop hosting.

The guide documents two installation routes: Steam’s Tools library and SteamCMD. Exact menus can change, but the process is:
- Install the tool. In the Steam desktop client, open Library, use the filter that shows Tools, and install The Forest Dedicated Server. If you manage servers from a command line, install the same tool with SteamCMD instead.
- Launch it once. Start the server executable. The guide says the first launch generates
Server.cfg; let that initialization complete before editing files. - Choose a configuration method. You can supply command-line parameters when launching or edit
Server.cfg. The guide states that command-line parameters override corresponding values in the configuration file, so conflicting entries will not be resolved in favor of the file. - Set the values you need. Configure the server name, player limit and other options exposed by your installed version. Keep the documented eight-player maximum as the starting default unless your build presents a different supported limit.
- Configure networking. Use the ports shown above unless your version’s documentation specifies replacements, then align router and firewall rules with those values.
- Consider a server account token. The guide describes a Steam server account token as optional and says it can help players locate the server. Treat it as a discoverability aid, not a substitute for correct forwarding or firewall rules.
- Restart after edits. Stop the process cleanly, save the configuration, and launch again. Confirm in the console or log that the intended settings loaded; a stale process can continue using old values.
Keep a copy of the working configuration and save directory before changing several settings at once. That gives you a known-good rollback if a new value prevents startup.

Self-hosting versus a paid game-server host
Renting a host can be more convenient when you want an always-on world without maintaining a Windows machine or home network. It does not remove the need to verify compatibility: providers can differ in game-version support, player slots, location, backup policy and configuration access.

Choose self-hosting when you want maximum control and are comfortable troubleshooting networking. Choose a paid host when continuous availability and reduced maintenance outweigh the recurring cost. Because no provider, price or service level was verified here, treat every hosting offer as something to check independently.

Use an existing PC first
If you already own a Windows computer, install the dedicated tool and measure it under a realistic session. This avoids turning an unverified client specification into a purchase. Record CPU, memory, disk activity and network behavior while one player connects, then repeat near your intended maximum.
Separate server load from client load
You can run the server and the game client on one PC, but that combines two workloads. A machine that plays smoothly alone may become constrained when it also simulates the world for other players. Test the combined workload if that is your plan; otherwise, use a separate host and measure the server process by itself.

Plan for failure and recovery
- Back up saves before updates or configuration changes.
- Keep installation notes, port mappings and known-good settings together.
- Have a restart procedure and a way to reach the machine remotely if it will run unattended.
- Decide who owns the save and how it will be transferred if you move from a home PC to a hosted service.
Troubleshooting common hosting problems
The server is running, but friends cannot see or join it
Confirm that the process is listening on the configured ports, that all three ports are forwarded to the correct local address, and that Windows Firewall permits both TCP and UDP. Test from an external network and check for carrier-grade NAT. A Steam account token may improve listing visibility, but it cannot repair blocked inbound traffic.

Look for a command-line parameter supplying the same setting. According to the guide, launch parameters take precedence over the file. Remove the conflicting parameter, stop the old process, save the file and restart.
The configuration file is missing
Launch the server once so it can generate Server.cfg, then stop it cleanly and edit the generated file. If it still does not appear, verify the executable’s working directory and the Windows account’s write permissions.
Performance worsens as more players join
Observe CPU and memory during the same in-game actions, not just at startup. Reduce unrelated workloads, confirm that the server and clients are on compatible versions, and compare results with fewer players. There is no published server benchmark that lets you declare a particular processor or RAM amount sufficient in advance.
An update breaks the setup
Recheck the guide’s v1.07 assumptions against the installed build, preserve your saves and configuration, and verify whether port names, executable behavior or available parameters changed. The 2019 community instructions are historical guidance rather than current official documentation.
