Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted The Forest servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
On the Steam PC version of The Forest, enable cheats in the gameplay or server settings, return to the fully loaded main title screen, and type developermodeon as one uninterrupted word. There is no text box and usually no success message. Afterward, load or start the game and press F1 to toggle the developer console; F2 shows console status and log information.
The command must be entered before you enter a save. If this sequence does not work, the usual causes are using the wrong screen, forgetting the separate cheats permission, pressing the wrong function-key combination, trying an unsupported platform, or testing a command that has changed or produces no visible effect.
Quick fix: the exact activation sequence
- Start the Steam PC edition and wait until the main title screen has finished loading completely.
- Open the relevant gameplay settings and turn cheats on. In multiplayer, the host or server administrator must make this change; a joining client cannot override a disabled host setting.
- Return to the fully loaded title screen. Do not enter a save, pause menu, chat box, or console first.
- Type
developermodeonblindly, with no spaces. The game normally gives no confirmation and does not display a field while you type. - Load an existing save or start a new game.
- Press F1. A working developer console should open or close. Press F2 to display console status and log information.
If F1 works but a particular command does not, developer mode may already be active. Treat that as a command-specific problem rather than repeating the activation process.
Where the command must be typed
Use the title screen, not an active save
The activation input is accepted on the main title screen before the game session loads. It is intentionally “blind” input: there is no visible prompt, search field, or confirmation banner. Type the word exactly, then begin or load the game and test F1.
Do not add spaces or punctuation
Enter the command as a single lowercase word. A space between words, a trailing punctuation mark, or typing it into an in-game console will not perform the title-screen activation. If you are unsure whether the keyboard registered a key, wait until the title screen is fully settled and enter the word once again rather than experimenting inside a save.

Why entering it after loading fails
Once a save is active, the game is listening for gameplay controls and console commands, not the title-screen developer-mode switch. Pressing keys in the world, in a pause screen, or in a chat interface therefore cannot substitute for the pre-load step.
Cheats and developer mode are separate permissions
A common mistake is assuming that enabling the console automatically authorizes cheats. The two checks are independent:
- Developer-mode activation: the blind title-screen command enables the console feature on supported PC installations.
- Cheat permission: the gameplay, multiplayer, or server setting allows cheat behavior in that session.
You need both. If the console opens but cheat-related commands are rejected, revisit the gameplay or server settings instead of retyping the title-screen command.
Single-player sessions
Enable cheats in the game’s gameplay settings before returning to the title screen. Then perform the activation sequence and load the save. If you changed the setting while a save was already open, leave that session and repeat the title-screen step so the new permission is applied from a clean start.
Peer-to-peer multiplayer
The host controls whether cheats are allowed. Every player can have the console available locally, but a client cannot turn on cheats for a host who has disabled them. Have the host enable the setting before launching or reopening the session, then use the title-screen activation on the host’s PC and on any client that needs console access.
Dedicated servers
Server configurations can expose an allowcheats on|off setting. Set it to on in the server configuration and restart the server if the change is not recognized immediately. A local client-side activation does not bypass a server set to off; the server’s permission layer remains authoritative.

What F1 and F2 tell you
F1: console toggle
After the save has loaded, F1 toggles the developer console. If a console panel appears, the title-screen activation and keyboard input have worked even if a later command has no obvious result. Press F1 again to hide it.
F2: status and log information
F2 displays console status or log information. Use it as a second check when F1 appears to do nothing. A status or log display confirms that the game is receiving the function-key input and that the console subsystem is present.
Function-row and laptop keyboards
Many compact and laptop keyboards assign media controls to the function row. In that case, use the keyboard’s Fn key together with F1 or F2, or connect a standard USB keyboard for PC gaming. If an external keyboard makes F1 respond immediately, the original problem was the keyboard’s function-row mode rather than the game command.
Check that the keyboard is connected before launching the game, and test the function key in another application if you suspect a hardware issue. Avoid remapping F1 or F2 until you have confirmed the default keys are being sent; an operating-system or keyboard utility can intercept them before the game sees them.
Platform support and limits
| Platform | Input path | Permission layer | What you can expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam PC | Title-screen command, then in-game F1/F2 | Local gameplay setting; host or server setting in multiplayer | Full developer-console workflow is documented and supported on this edition. |
| PS4 | Keyboard-entered game-mode codes | Console/game-mode limitations of the PS4 edition | Some game-mode codes work with a connected keyboard, but the full PC developer console is not available. |
| VR | No equivalent full console workflow | Not applicable | The full developer console is not available in the VR version. |
Instructions copied from a PC guide will therefore fail on VR and will overstate what is possible on PS4. Confirm the platform before changing settings or troubleshooting your keyboard.
Diagnose the failure by its symptom
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing seems to happen after typing the command | Wrong screen, incomplete title-screen load, spaces in the command, or cheats not enabled | Return to the fully loaded title screen, type the one-word command blindly, and confirm the separate cheats setting. |
| F1 does nothing after loading | Function-row media mode, key interception, unsupported platform, or activation was attempted inside the save | Try Fn+F1 or an external keyboard, then use F2 and verify that you are on Steam PC. |
| F2 also does nothing | Keyboard input is not reaching the game, or the edition does not provide the console | Test another keyboard, disable key-remapping utilities temporarily, and check the platform. |
| F1 opens a console but one command fails | The individual command is version-sensitive, removed, mistyped, or visually silent | Check the command’s current documentation and look for a log or state change instead of assuming dev mode failed. |
| Commands work locally but not in multiplayer | The host or dedicated server has cheats disabled | Have the host enable cheats; for a dedicated server, set allowcheats on and restart when required. |
If the title-screen activation appears to do nothing
1. Confirm the title screen is fully loaded
Do not type while the game is still transitioning from startup, displaying a loading overlay, or opening a save. Wait for the ordinary main menu, then enter the command once. The absence of a visual acknowledgment is normal, so the meaningful test comes after loading a game and pressing F1.

2. Recheck the exact input path
Use the physical keyboard, not a controller’s text-entry overlay. Keep the command as one word and do not paste it into a visible field. If you accidentally opened a save first, quit to the title screen and repeat the process from there.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →3. Verify cheats before restarting
Open gameplay settings for a local game, or the multiplayer/server settings for a shared game, and make sure cheats are enabled. Changing only the console-related behavior does not grant permission to use cheat commands, and changing only the permission does not replace the title-screen activation.
4. Test the console rather than waiting for a message
Load the session and press F1. The console toggle is the reliable visible test because the activation command itself generally has no banner or text response. Use F2 for status and logs if the first key press seems ignored.
If F1 does not open the console
Check the function-key mode
On laptops and compact keyboards, the top row may send volume, brightness, or playback controls by default. Hold Fn while pressing F1, switch the keyboard to its standard function-key mode, or attach a conventional USB keyboard. The correct combination depends on the keyboard, so look for an Fn-lock indicator or the manufacturer’s function-row toggle.
Rule out software interception
Keyboard managers, macro tools, accessibility utilities, and remote-desktop layers can capture F1 before the game receives it. Temporarily disable those mappings, then relaunch the game and test F1 and F2. If both keys work after disabling a utility, keep the game profile from remapping them.

Check that you are testing the correct edition
The documented full console workflow applies to Steam PC. VR does not provide that full console, and PS4 supports only selected keyboard-entered game-mode codes. No keyboard adjustment can add PC developer-console functionality to an edition that does not include it.
Repeat activation only after fixing input
If your keyboard was sending media commands instead of F1, correct that issue first, return to the title screen, and perform the activation sequence again. Testing repeatedly inside the same loaded save can obscure whether the original title-screen step was ever completed.

If the console opens but commands still fail
Separate console availability from command availability
A visible console proves only that the console subsystem is active. It does not promise that every command found in an old guide remains implemented. Commands can be changed, removed, restricted to a mode, or accepted without producing an obvious on-screen effect.
Look for a state change or log entry
Some commands alter an internal value, inventory, or world behavior without displaying a confirmation. Use F2 to inspect status and logs, observe the game state after closing the console, and test one command at a time. If the console logs an unknown or invalid command, the activation itself is not the problem.

Community lists often remain online after a game update changes command behavior. Compare the command with documentation that identifies the current Steam build or with the console’s own error output. Do not infer that a nonworking command means you must reinstall the game or repeat developer-mode activation.
Check spelling and syntax independently
Console commands can be sensitive to spelling, capitalization, arguments, and required values. Copying a command from a guide with a missing argument can produce a failure even when the console is functioning normally. Validate the complete command format for your version before troubleshooting the activation again.
Multiplayer troubleshooting in detail
Host sessions
Ask the host to enable cheats before starting or reopening the session. The host should activate developer mode from the title screen, load the game, and verify F1. A client who performs the activation locally cannot grant permissions that the host has withheld.
Dedicated-server sessions
Check the server configuration for allowcheats on|off. Use on when cheats are intended, then restart the server if the configuration system requires a restart. Reconnect only after the server is running with the new setting; otherwise clients may continue receiving the old permission state.

- Meet characters that explore the world along with you

Mixed results between players
If the host can use a command but a client cannot, compare each player’s platform and keyboard input first, then verify that the server allows cheats. If everyone can open F1 but only certain commands fail, investigate command support or mode restrictions rather than server ownership.
Should you use Steam launch options?
Steam’s generic help lists launch options such as -dev and -console, but it also warns that launch options do not apply to most third-party games. The documented workflow for The Forest is the title-screen activation command, so launch options are a separate experiment, not the primary fix for a failed developer-mode activation.
If you test a launch option, remove it before comparing results with the documented workflow. Otherwise, an unsupported option can create a second variable and make it harder to tell whether the title-screen command, the keyboard, or the game build is responsible for the behavior.
A clean troubleshooting order
- Confirm that you are running the Steam PC edition rather than VR or PS4.
- Enable cheats in the appropriate gameplay, host, or server setting.
- Exit any active save and wait for the fully loaded title screen.
- Enter the one-word developer-mode command without spaces or punctuation.
- Load a session and test F1, then F2.
- If the keys fail, try the keyboard’s Fn combination or a standard USB keyboard and disable key-remapping software temporarily.
- If the console opens, test one command and inspect the status/log display before repeating activation.
- For multiplayer, have the host or server administrator verify cheat permission; use
allowcheats onfor a dedicated server and restart it when necessary. - Only after these checks consider whether the specific command is outdated, removed, mode-restricted, or visually silent.
What a successful result looks like
Success does not mean seeing a “developer mode enabled” notification. The practical success criteria are that the title-screen input was accepted, the game loads normally, F1 toggles a console, and F2 can show console status or logs. Individual commands must then be judged on their own current syntax and effect.

If those criteria are met, stop repeating the activation command and troubleshoot the particular command or multiplayer permission that remains. If they are not met, work through the platform, title-screen, cheats-setting, and keyboard checks in that order; each rules out a different failure layer.
