The best first changes on a new Windows laptop are to install every update, verify that Windows Security is protecting the device, review app permissions, reduce unwanted startup and background activity, and configure backup. Do those in that order: updates can change available controls, security should be established before privacy tuning, and backup protects your files before you begin customizing the system.
This checklist targets supported Windows 11 laptops. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so a machine still running Windows 10 should be checked for an upgrade path or replaced with a supported release before you rely on it for sensitive work.
A practical first-run order
- Install Windows and driver updates, then confirm the Windows version.
- Check antivirus, firewall and web-protection providers in Windows Security.
- Review location, camera, microphone and other app permissions.
- Choose whether advertising and personalization features fit your privacy preference.
- Disable unneeded startup programs.
- Limit background activity for apps that do not need constant syncing.
- Turn on Windows Backup for folders and settings you would want during recovery or migration.
- Finish encryption, diagnostics, default-app and Find my device choices.
Keep the software you recognize and need. A setting that improves battery life can also stop notifications, delay synchronization or remove a convenient recovery option.

Install updates and confirm the Windows release
Update before changing behavior
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates, install all available quality, security and driver updates, and restart when Windows asks.
- Return to Windows Update and check again until no important updates remain.
Windows Update is the control center for keeping the operating system current. Updating first can add security fixes and change the location or wording of later privacy controls, so postponing it can make the rest of this checklist inaccurate.

Verify the edition and version
Open Settings > System > About and review the Windows edition and version. A new laptop should be on a supported Windows 11 release. If it is running Windows 10, remember that free security fixes ended on October 14, 2025; investigate an eligible Windows 11 upgrade or use a supported replacement rather than treating the old installation as permanently safe.
Also install firmware and manufacturer driver updates offered through Windows Update or the laptop maker’s trusted support utility. Create a restore point or recovery drive only after updates finish, so your recovery media reflects the current installation.
Confirm Windows Security protection
Check every provider category
Open the Windows Security app from Start. Review its provider areas for:
- Virus & threat protection: confirm that an antivirus provider is active and that real-time protection is not disabled.
- Firewall & network protection: check that the firewall is enabled for the network profiles you use.
- App & browser control: review reputation and web-protection features that warn about unsafe apps, files or sites.
If you intentionally installed another security product, verify which provider is active instead of running two real-time antivirus engines. Do not disable protection merely because a preinstalled trial displays a notification; uninstall software you do not want and confirm that Windows Security returns to an active state.
What to do when a provider is missing
A yellow or red warning in Windows Security is a task to resolve, not a cosmetic message. Install pending updates, restart, and open the affected protection page for its repair or enable option. If a third-party antivirus was removed incompletely, use its official removal process and restart before relying on Microsoft Defender protection.
Review privacy permissions app by app
Use the global controls first
Go to Settings > Privacy & security. Open each capability that matters to you—Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Calendar, notifications and account information—and review both the device-wide switch and the individual app switches.

A sensible approach is to leave a capability off globally until an app actually needs it, then enable only the apps you recognize. A video-calling app may need microphone and camera access; a calculator normally does not. Revisit permissions after installing a new app, because installation can add a new entry.

Microsoft’s permission pages do not always list traditional desktop applications. A desktop program may use the camera, microphone, contacts or files through its own settings, or it may not expose a per-app Windows switch at all. Review privacy controls inside those programs and uninstall software you do not trust; the Windows list is not a complete audit of every executable.
Location and diagnostics trade-offs
Turning off location can improve privacy but affects maps, time-zone detection and location-aware services. Diagnostic-data controls can reduce optional sharing, but some required data remains necessary for Windows operation and servicing. Choose the least data-sharing level that still supports features you use rather than assuming every diagnostic switch can be set to zero.
Reduce advertising and personalization
Find the current controls
On current Windows 11 builds, open Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers. Older builds may label the page General. Review and disable any options you do not want, including:
- Use of an advertising ID to personalize ads.
- App-launch tracking used to improve Start and search suggestions.
- Suggested content shown in Settings or other Windows surfaces.
These switches generally change personalization rather than blocking all advertising or telemetry. Turning off the advertising ID can make ads less targeted, but it does not guarantee that ads disappear. If a recommendation remains, inspect the app or service displaying it; a Windows privacy switch may not control a third-party account.

Use Settings for a quick review
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Sort or scan the list and note each app’s startup impact.
- Set unneeded entries to Off, especially items marked with high impact.
Use Task Manager for more detail
- Right-click the Start button and open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Review the Startup impact column, select an app you recognize, and choose Disable.
Disable only software you can identify. Leave hardware controls, security tools, password managers and synchronization tools enabled when you depend on them. Disabling a launcher does not uninstall its program; you can reverse the change from the same page. If a program continues to start, check its own in-app setting or a scheduled task rather than repeatedly disabling an unknown entry.

Limit background activity without breaking notifications
Choose a per-app battery policy
For a compatible Microsoft Store app, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s three-dot menu, choose Advanced options, and find Background apps permissions. Set an app to:
- Power optimized when Windows should balance updates and battery use.
- Never when the app does not need to sync or notify you while closed.
Use Never for apps such as games or occasional utilities that do not need continuous activity. Do not use it for messaging, calendar or security software if you expect immediate alerts or automatic checks.
Desktop programs need their own controls
Traditional desktop applications may not offer the Background apps permissions menu. Look in the program’s preferences for options such as “launch at startup,” “run in background” or “check for updates automatically.” You can also remove its startup entry through Task Manager, but understand that doing so may delay updates until you open the program.

Measure the result
After changing several apps, use Settings > System > Power & battery to review battery usage. If notifications stop or synchronization becomes unreliable, restore the app to Power optimized or re-enable its startup option. Change one or two entries at a time so you can identify the cause.
Turn on Windows Backup for recovery and migration
What Windows Backup can include
Open the Windows Backup app from Start, or search Settings for backup options. Depending on the account and edition, Windows Backup can preserve:
- Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos and Music folders.
- Installed-app information that helps restore apps during setup.
- Accessibility preferences, accounts, Wi-Fi information and personalization settings.
Folder backup uses OneDrive, and settings are associated with your Microsoft account. That makes moving to another Windows PC easier, but it consumes cloud storage and requires you to sign in with the same account during recovery. Confirm which folders are selected and check the available storage before enabling everything.

Configure and verify it
- Sign in to the Microsoft account you intend to keep using.
- Open Windows Backup and select the folders and settings you want synchronized.
- Allow the initial upload to finish on a reliable connection.
- Check OneDrive’s status and open a backed-up folder from another device or the web to verify that files are present.
Windows Backup is not a complete image backup and does not replace an independent copy of irreplaceable data. If you also want a separate local copy, consider an external backup drive and use a scheduled backup tool; keep that copy disconnected when it is not being updated to reduce exposure to ransomware.
When backup does not behave as expected
If a folder is missing, verify that it is one of the supported folders and that OneDrive is signed in and has enough storage. If settings do not restore on a new PC, confirm that you used the same Microsoft account and that the feature was enabled before the old device was reset. Files stored outside the selected folders require their own backup plan.

Device encryption
Open Settings > Privacy & security and look for Device encryption (the exact availability depends on hardware and edition). Encryption protects data if the laptop is lost, but recovery depends on retaining the recovery key. Save or print that key through the offered Microsoft-account option before changing firmware or resetting the device. Business editions may expose BitLocker management instead.
Find my device
Under Settings > Privacy & security > Find my device, enable the feature if you want to locate a lost laptop. It requires location services and a Microsoft account, and the device must be online for a current location. It is a recovery aid, not a substitute for a strong sign-in password or encryption.
Default apps
Go to Settings > Apps > Default apps. Set your preferred browser, mail client, PDF reader and media players, then test common file types and web links. Windows may ask separately for each file extension or link type; review those prompts rather than assuming one selection changed every association.

Choose settings by your priority
| Priority | Recommended choices | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Strongest protection | Install updates immediately; keep antivirus, firewall, web protection, encryption and Find my device enabled; back up important folders. | More sign-in, storage and recovery-key responsibilities. |
| Maximum privacy | Restrict location, camera, microphone and other permissions; disable advertising ID, app-launch tracking and suggestions you do not want; limit optional diagnostics. | Some recommendations, location features and app convenience may disappear. |
| Longest battery life | Disable high-impact startup entries and set nonessential background apps to Never; use Power optimized for apps that still need occasional updates. | Delayed notifications, sync and automatic updates. |
| Fast migration to another PC | Enable Windows Backup, select required folders and settings, and keep the Microsoft-account credentials and recovery key available. | OneDrive storage use and dependence on account access. |
Common mistakes and fixes
- Disabling an unfamiliar startup item: search its publisher and file location before changing it; re-enable it in Startup apps if hardware buttons, security or syncing stop working.
- Blocking every background app: restore messaging, calendar and security apps to Power optimized when alerts or updates are missed.
- Assuming Windows permissions cover desktop software: inspect the desktop app’s own privacy and startup settings.
- Enabling folder backup without checking storage: review OneDrive capacity and select only folders you can keep synchronized.
- Encrypting without preserving the recovery key: save the key before making firmware changes or resetting Windows.
- Leaving Windows 10 untouched: verify the release immediately because free security support ended October 14, 2025.
A short maintenance schedule
Once the initial setup is complete, revisit Windows Update and Windows Security regularly, review newly installed apps’ permissions, and check startup entries after major software installations. Confirm that Windows Backup is still syncing and occasionally test that a backed-up file can be restored. These small checks prevent a one-time setup from becoming stale as apps and Windows features change.
