Start with Picture Mode. It changes several parts of the image at once and usually has a bigger effect than adjusting one slider. Try Filmmaker Mode if your TV offers it; otherwise, test Movie, Cinema, or an accurate Expert or Professional preset. The right choice depends on your TV, room, and what you watch.
Why Picture Mode is the best place to start
Picture Mode is a preset that can change color temperature, white balance, and sometimes motion processing together. That makes it a more consequential first adjustment than changing a single control in isolation. RTINGS recommends starting with picture mode when adjusting a TV: How to calibrate your TV.
Mode names vary by manufacturer and may differ across inputs, apps, signal types, or firmware. Look for Filmmaker Mode, Movie, Cinema, Theater, Expert, or Professional rather than expecting one universal label or numeric recipe.

For films and television
Try Filmmaker Mode first. It is designed to reduce extra picture and motion processing for a presentation closer to the creator’s intent. The UHD Alliance describes the goal as experiencing movies and television shows at home as intended by the filmmaker; see its Filmmaker Mode information. The mode may look dimmer than a vivid preset or restrict adjustments you want to make. If so, compare Movie, Cinema, or an accurate Expert or Professional mode.

For HDR video
Check the mode while HDR content is actually playing. Many TVs switch to separate picture settings when an HDR signal begins, so the mode and adjustments you use for ordinary SDR video may not carry over. Exact recommendations depend on the model: RTINGS uses Filmmaker Mode for both SDR and HDR on its tested LG Gallery 2026 and TCL X11L units, but recommends Movie for SDR and Filmmaker Mode for HDR on its tested Samsung QN70F family. For gaming
Use Game Mode or your TV’s equivalent when reducing input lag and improving responsiveness matters. It is a practical exception to choosing a film-oriented preset. Motion interpolation is a separate preference: decide whether you like its effect for the content you play or watch.

For a bright room
Keep an accurate-looking preset if you prefer its image, then adjust the backlight or panel-brightness control to make the screen comfortable in your room. A brighter room generally calls for more light output, but the best level is personal. Do not confuse this control with black level: black level affects shadow and black reproduction, and an incorrect value can hide dark detail or make blacks look gray.
How to find a comfortable, accurate starting point
- Open picture settings while playing familiar content. Use a film, show, or game you normally watch rather than judging the image from a highly processed demo clip.
- Select Filmmaker Mode, if available. Watch a few familiar scenes. If the image feels too dim or the mode is too restrictive, compare Movie, Cinema, or an accurate Expert or Professional preset.
- Adjust backlight or panel brightness for the room. Make small changes while watching. Leave black level alone unless you have a specific reason to adjust it.
- Check SDR and HDR separately. Start HDR playback and inspect the picture mode again; your TV may have changed to a distinct HDR preset or settings.
- Switch to Game Mode for responsive play. Use it when input response matters more than a film-oriented presentation.
- Leave advanced white-balance controls alone unless you can measure the display. Settings from another individual TV—even one with the same model and screen size—may not transfer accurately.
Do you need equipment to improve the picture?
No special equipment is needed to try a different picture mode or make basic adjustments. A colorimeter is relevant only if you want measurement-based calibration. Advanced white-balance work requires specialized tools, and the resulting values are specific to the individual TV rather than a universal recipe.
