To reach The End in Minecraft Survival, craft Eyes of Ender from Ender pearls and blaze powder, throw them to locate an underground stronghold, find its portal room, and place an Eye in all 12 End Portal frames. Entering that portal summons the Ender Dragon. To win, destroy the End Crystals healing the dragon, then switch between ranged attacks while it flies and melee attacks when it perches.
This guide follows the complete route, explains what to carry, and gives a crystal-first battle plan that works even when arrows are limited.

What The End is and why the stronghold matters
The End is Minecraft’s final major dimension and the location of the Ender Dragon. Mojang’s Stronghold guidance describes defeating the dragon as necessary to complete Minecraft and reach the credits screen. In Survival, you cannot simply walk to an End portal: the portal room is hidden inside an underground stronghold that you must locate first.
The route has two separate jobs for Eyes of Ender. You throw them in the Overworld to get the direction of a stronghold, and you place them into the portal frames to activate the gateway. Eyes used for navigation can disappear, so the number you need to locate a stronghold is not fixed. The portal itself always has 12 frames, and every frame must contain an Eye before it activates.
#1 Best Overall
Route overview
- Collect Ender pearls and blaze powder.
- Craft Eyes of Ender.
- Use the eyes in the Overworld to track down a stronghold.
- Search the stronghold for its End portal room.
- Place an Eye of Ender in each of the 12 frames.
- Prepare your inventory, then enter The End.
- Destroy the End Crystals and attack the Ender Dragon during the appropriate phase of the fight.
Gather the materials and craft Eyes of Ender
Ender pearls
Ender pearls are one ingredient for an Eye of Ender. Keep every pearl you obtain while preparing for the stronghold; navigation may require multiple throws, and an Eye can be lost before you reach your destination.
Blaze powder
Blaze powder is the second ingredient. It comes from blaze rods, so you need access to the Nether and a way to obtain blaze rods before you can make Eyes. The official stronghold explanation describes an Eye of Ender as an Ender pearl imbued with the Nether’s blaze powder.
Craft the eyes
Combine one Ender pearl with one unit of blaze powder in the crafting grid to make an Eye of Ender. Craft more than the minimum needed for the portal: up to 12 eyes are required to fill the frames, and additional eyes may be consumed or break while you are locating the stronghold.
- Put spare eyes in a secure chest before the search so one accidental loss does not end the expedition.
- Carry enough ordinary building blocks to mark corridors and block off dead ends.
- Keep food, a weapon, light sources and a pickaxe available while exploring the stronghold.
Locate the stronghold with Eyes of Ender
1. Start in the Overworld
Use an Eye of Ender in the Overworld, not in The Nether. Throwing it produces a direction to follow. Walk in that direction, retrieve the eye if it remains, and throw another after covering a meaningful distance. Repeated throws let you correct your course instead of wandering through every underground structure you encounter.
2. Expect losses
An eye is not guaranteed to return after every throw. Some eyes are consumed or otherwise lost during stronghold locating, which is why carrying spares is essential. Do not plan to arrive with exactly 12 eyes and assume all of them will survive the search.
Rank #2
3. Recognize that you are over the stronghold
When successive throws stop pointing farther across the surface and instead lead back toward the same area, begin searching below ground. Dig down safely with a staircase or offset shaft rather than mining straight beneath your feet. The stronghold is underground, and the exact tunnel you enter can open into a library, hallway or dead end rather than the portal room.

4. Map the structure as you explore
Strongholds are networks of rooms and corridors. Place blocks or other markers at junctions, light the route you have already checked, and close off branches that lead nowhere. If a corridor terminates at solid stone where you expected another room, mine around the obstruction carefully; the portal room can be separated from the route you first entered.
Find the End portal room
The portal room is a distinct stronghold room containing a frame arrangement around a central opening. You are looking for 12 End Portal frames, not a decorative portal that is already active. A silverfish spawner is commonly associated with this room; remove the threat before standing on the frame edge or placing eyes.
Search methodically
- Return to your markers whenever you reach an unexplored junction.
- Check staircases and corridors that descend as well as level hallways.
- Listen for hostile mobs or silverfish, but do not break through walls recklessly near lava.
- If you become disoriented, retrace your markers rather than digging a large random tunnel that can miss connected rooms.
Secure the room before activation
Light the area, remove nearby enemies and make sure you have a clear retreat route. The portal will take you to The End immediately once it activates, so finish inventory management and place emergency blocks before inserting the final eye.
Activate the portal
- Stand at the edge of the frame ring so you can place eyes without stepping into the center.
- Place one Eye of Ender into each empty frame.
- Check every side of the ring. The portal room contains 12 frames, and all 12 must be filled.
- When the final required eye is inserted, the frame opening changes into the active End portal.
- Enter only after checking your armor, food, weapons, building blocks and spare supplies.
An incomplete ring does nothing; one missing eye is enough to prevent activation. If the portal does not activate, walk around the entire ring and identify the empty frame rather than breaking the structure immediately.

The End island is a dangerous place to discover that an essential item was left in a chest. Use a deliberate checklist before entering.
- Weapons: Bring a bow or other ranged weapon for the dragon in flight and a melee weapon for its perching phase.
- Ammunition: Carry arrows if you plan to shoot, but reserve them for the dragon. Snowballs can destroy many End Crystals and conserve arrows when ammunition is limited.
- Protection and recovery: Wear your best available armor, carry food, and bring blocks for cover and for safe movement near the island edge.
- Mining and utility: A pickaxe helps with emergency cover and with iron bars around protected crystals.
- Storage: Put irreplaceable loot in an Ender chest before the fight. Its contents remain accessible across dimensions, so a death in The End does not expose those valuables on the island.
- Inventory discipline: Keep your hotbar arranged so blocks, food, ranged weapon and melee weapon are reachable without opening the inventory while the dragon is attacking.
How the Ender Dragon fight works
The dragon appears after you arrive in The End. Its healing source is the group of End Crystals mounted on the tall obsidian pillars. As long as crystals remain, damage you deal to the dragon can be undone, so crystal destruction is the first objective rather than an optional side task.
Destroy the exposed crystals
Use ranged attacks against crystals you can safely target from the ground. Keep moving between shots and use the island’s terrain or your own blocks as cover. Avoid standing at the rim: a knockback hit can send you into the void even when your health bar is full.
Handle crystals behind iron bars
Some crystals are protected by iron-bar cages. A normal shot may not reach the crystal through the obstruction. Build or climb only when the dragon is away, break an opening in the bars, and retreat before the dragon’s next pass. Once the cage is opened, destroy the crystal and return to cover.

Snowballs are a practical ammunition-saving option for many crystals. They let you remove crystal healing without spending the arrows you need for the dragon itself. This is especially useful for a player who arrived with a limited supply of arrows.

Switch attacks by phase
While the dragon is airborne, use ranged attacks and keep a clear view of the pillars and the sky. When it perches near the central portal, close in for melee damage if the approach is safe. Do not chase it over the void or stand directly where its movement can launch you off the island.
A crystal-first battle plan
- Choose a safe starting position. Identify solid ground away from the edge and build a short wall or other cover if the terrain gives you no protection.
- Scan all pillars. Destroy every crystal you can reach from range before attempting risky climbs.
- Mark caged pillars. Save them for a deliberate approach with blocks and a pickaxe; do not improvise a climb while the dragon is circling directly overhead.
- Confirm healing has stopped. Once the crystals are gone, the dragon can no longer restore health from those pillars.
- Damage the airborne dragon. Fire measured shots while it flies. Keep enough ammunition for repeated passes rather than emptying your quiver at one difficult angle.
- Punish the perch. Move in for melee strikes when the dragon settles near the central portal, then retreat before it takes off or knocks you toward the void.
- Repeat patiently. Surviving the island is more important than forcing one extra hit. Re-establish cover and food before the next attack window.
Choose a combat approach
| Approach | How it works | Main advantage | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ranged-heavy | Use a bow or similar weapon while the dragon is airborne and during safe openings. | Keeps you away from the dragon’s body and the central melee zone. | Consumes arrows; save ammunition by using snowballs for crystals where practical. |
| Melee-heavy | Concentrate on strikes when the dragon perches near the exit portal. | Does not depend on a large arrow supply. | Requires safe timing and positioning close to knockback and the island edge. |
| Crystal-first, cautious | Spend the opening phase removing every End Crystal, including caged ones, then alternate ranged and melee attacks. | Stops healing before you commit to sustained dragon damage. | Takes patience; climbing toward a caged crystal creates a temporary exposure. |
| Speed-focused | Prioritize rapid damage windows and accept more movement risk. | Can shorten the time spent in the arena. | Skipping crystals leaves the dragon able to recover health, and hurried movement increases the chance of a fall. |
There is no single required weapon mix. The reliable principle is to remove the healing crystals first, conserve limited ammunition, and attack from the position that keeps you away from the void.
Survival, Creative and command-assisted routes
| Route | What you do | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Survival | Gather pearls and blaze powder, craft eyes, locate a stronghold, activate its 12-frame portal and fight the dragon with gathered equipment. | Resources, navigation losses and combat preparation matter. |
| Creative | Use unrestricted inventory access to obtain portal components and equipment, then enter an activated portal or build the setup in a controlled area. | Material gathering and ordinary death penalties are reduced, but frame orientation and complete activation still matter for a functioning portal. |
| Commands | Use the commands available in your edition to change game mode, locate a stronghold or obtain eyes and equipment. | Command names and syntax vary between Java and Bedrock versions; use the in-game autocomplete for your current version instead of copying a command from an older release. |
If your goal is Minecraft’s Survival progression, the stronghold route is the meaningful path. Creative and commands are useful for testing arena layouts, practicing crystal shots or recovering from a technical problem, but they bypass the resource and exploration challenge.
Troubleshooting common problems
An Eye of Ender keeps disappearing
That is a normal risk of locating a stronghold. Replace it from your spare supply and continue from the direction indicated by the next throw. Do not assume every eye will return.
You reached the area but cannot find the portal room
Mark every junction, revisit unexplored branches and check lower staircases. The first stronghold room you enter may be far from the portal. If a corridor appears to end abruptly, search around the obstruction rather than abandoning the structure.
Best Value
The portal will not activate
Walk around the frame ring and count the empty sockets. All 12 frames require an Eye of Ender. Also verify that you are placing eyes into End Portal frames, not looking at a decorative or damaged structure that is missing part of its ring.

A crystal is behind iron bars
Do not waste arrows against a protected target. Wait for a safe opening, approach with blocks for a controlled climb, break the bars with a pickaxe, destroy the crystal and retreat to cover.
The dragon keeps recovering health
Search every obsidian pillar for an intact End Crystal, including caged pillars. Sustained attacks before the crystals are gone waste time because the dragon can be healed again.
You are running out of arrows
Stop spending arrows on crystals that snowballs can destroy, then reserve the remaining arrows for the airborne dragon. Use melee attacks during perches when the approach is safe.
You are being knocked toward the void
Move away from the rim, place cover on solid ground and stop chasing the dragon across exposed terrain. A short defensive wall and disciplined retreat are more valuable than one additional hit.
