Social-media restrictions can address genuine safety concerns and still fail in court or remain unproven in practice. Florida’s under-16 law was blocked as likely unconstitutional, the federal TikTok divest-or-ban statute survived appellate review, and Australia’s under-16 rules took effect amid expert objections about evidence and age verification. For dogs, the strongest longevity evidence is less dramatic: maintain an ideal body condition, provide preventive veterinary care, reduce avoidable hazards and treat disease early. No supplement has been shown to add a predictable number of years.

Why social-media bans keep getting blocked or contested

A government can point to real harms without automatically having a legally valid or workable ban. Courts weigh a restriction’s wording, who it covers, how it affects speech and association, and whether the evidence supports the chosen method. Age checks can also create privacy and access problems, while a law’s stated goal may be easier to defend than its practical design.

“Failed” therefore covers several different outcomes: a court may enjoin a law before enforcement, an appellate court may uphold it, or a rule may take effect while experts dispute whether it will achieve measurable benefits.

Florida’s 2024 child-social-media law: enjoined

In June 2025, federal judge Mark Walker blocked enforcement of Florida’s 2024 law. It would ban social-media accounts for children younger than 14 and require parental permission for 14- and 15-year-olds. Walker acknowledged sincere concerns about harm to children but wrote that the measure was “likely unconstitutional.” The order means the law’s policy objective did not overcome the constitutional problems identified by the court.

The federal TikTok statute: upheld, not the same as an immediate app ban

In December 2024, the D.C. Circuit upheld the federal divest-or-ban statute. The Justice Department said the law was aimed at “breaking the ties that bind TikTok to the regime in Beijing,” framing it as a national-security measure rather than a general child-safety rule. An upheld statute is a different legal result from Florida’s injunction, but it does not by itself answer every implementation question. Divestiture, enforcement decisions and political developments determine what users actually experience.

Australia’s under-16 law: enacted amid evidence and implementation disputes

Australia’s under-16 social-media law came into force in December 2025 for major services including Facebook, Instagram, Reddit, TikTok and YouTube. More than 140 experts and organisations criticised the policy, according to BMJ. Clinicians questioned the strength of the evidence, the reliability and privacy implications of age assurance, and the possibility that removing accounts could cut off beneficial social connection. Taking effect does not settle whether a law improves mental health, safety or other outcomes; those effects require credible evaluation.

How the approaches differ

Measure Legal status Primary objective Evidence and implementation issues Key rights or policy tension
Florida 2024 law Enforcement blocked in June 2025 Child safety Judge found the law likely unconstitutional; age thresholds and parental-consent design were central practical features Free-expression and parental-authority questions
U.S. divest-or-ban statute concerning TikTok Upheld by the D.C. Circuit in December 2024 National security and control of data or ownership ties Legal validation does not guarantee a completed divestiture or stable enforcement timetable National-security powers versus continued access to a communications platform
Australia under-16 law In force since December 2025 Child safety and age-based access limits More than 140 experts and organisations disputed evidence, age assurance and possible loss of supportive connections Privacy, inclusion and access to beneficial social interaction

What is the safest age for social media?

There is no single age that the available cases establish as universally safe. A statutory threshold is a policy choice, not proof that risk begins or ends on a particular birthday. Families still have to assess a child’s maturity, the service’s design, privacy settings, contact risks, sleep disruption and ability to report abuse. Lawmakers should likewise test whether age assurance is accurate, proportionate and privacy-preserving before treating a numerical cutoff as a complete solution.

The legal record also shows why “a ban” is too broad a description. Florida’s rule was stopped by a court; the federal TikTok measure survived appellate review; Australia’s rule is operating while its effects remain disputed. Those are distinct answers to the questions of legality, implementation and effectiveness.

Social media is also a veterinary-information channel

Pet owners increasingly use social platforms for animal-health advice. A 2025 JAVMA viewpoint warns that nonexperts can gain influence despite lacking clinical expertise and recommends that veterinarians actively debunk rumours and provide transparent, science-based guidance. That creates a policy trade-off: reducing harmful content should not make it harder for owners to find trustworthy help or communicate about a sick animal.

For an owner, check whether a claim identifies a veterinary source, explains limits and risks, and recommends professional assessment when symptoms could be serious. Testimonials, viral before-and-after posts and confident claims about a “cure” are not substitutes for diagnosis.

How long do dogs live?

There is no universally accepted “average dog lifespan.” A 2024 JAVMA review of studies published from 1981 through 2023 found no veterinary consensus because mortality data, breeds, body sizes, cohorts and methods differ. The review found that median lifespan appears to have increased over time, but a single number hides large and meaningful variation.

One useful population benchmark comes from Banfield Pet Hospitals’ clinical dataset, published in 2023 and drawn from more than 1,000 U.S. hospitals. These are life-expectancy estimates at birth for populations, not a promise for an individual dog:

Dog size category Estimated life expectancy at birth
Giant 9.51 years
Large 11.51 years
Medium 12.70 years
Small 13.53 years
Toy 13.36 years
All dogs in the dataset 12.69 years

Breed, inherited disease, environment and the quality and timing of medical care can move an individual far from any population estimate. Use the figures to set expectations, not to predict a particular dog’s remaining years.

Does keeping a dog thin extend its life?

Maintaining an ideal body condition is one of the most modifiable, evidence-aligned longevity measures. In the same Banfield dataset, dogs classified as obese had an estimated life expectancy at birth of 11.71 years, compared with 13.18 years for dogs at an ideal body condition. The difference is an association in clinical records, not proof that a specific food, calorie target or weight-loss product will add a fixed number of years.

Ask a veterinarian to score body condition, set a realistic target, account for treats and measure progress. Weight goals should reflect age, breed, activity, existing disease and medications. Rapid or unsupervised restriction can create its own health problems.

What can you do to support a longer, healthier life?

Action Evidence strength Owner control Veterinary oversight Main risk of overclaiming
Keep body condition in the ideal range Meaningful population association High, with a measured plan Useful for scoring and targets Treating an association as a guaranteed added lifespan
Preventive examinations, vaccinations and parasite control Standard preventive-care rationale; exact lifespan gain is not established here Moderate to high High Promising a specific number of extra years
Early evaluation and individualized treatment of illness Biologically and clinically sensible; outcome varies by disease Low without professional help High Assuming one protocol fits every breed or age
Safe housing and hazard reduction Reduces avoidable injury and exposure risk; lifespan effect is not quantified here High As needed Calling general safety a proven anti-aging intervention
Longevity supplements Insufficient evidence for definitive household or dietary claims Variable Should be discussed first Assuming “natural” means effective or safe

A 2025 systematic review concluded that genetics, epigenetics and environment all influence lifespan, while evidence for several household and dietary exposures remains too limited for definitive claims. That is why a supplement marketed as a longevity shortcut deserves more skepticism than routine weight management and veterinary care. Bring the product name and ingredient list to a veterinarian, especially if the dog takes medication or has liver, kidney or gastrointestinal disease.

What the two issues have in common

Both debates reward precise claims. A social-media law can be legally valid yet ineffective, or well-intentioned yet unconstitutional. A pet-health product can sound plausible yet lack evidence of meaningful benefit. In each case, ask four questions: What outcome is being promised? Who measured it and how? Does the evidence apply to this person, child or animal? What are the privacy, health or opportunity costs if the claim is wrong?

For families, that means treating age limits as one safeguard rather than a complete safety plan, checking veterinary information against qualified sources, and prioritising body condition, preventive care, safe surroundings and individual treatment over unverified promises.
