After you speak to a voice assistant, the device identifies an activation, captures the requested interaction, and usually sends that recording or related data to the provider’s servers for processing. What happens next—whether audio is saved, a transcript is created, people can review samples, and deletion removes every copy—depends on the manufacturer, service and account settings. A device waiting for a wake word is not automatically streaming every sound in the room, but it can activate when ordinary speech resembles its trigger.

The voice-data journey, from wake word to deletion

1. The device waits for an activation

Smart speakers and phones generally run a local wake-word detector or accept another activation, such as pressing a button. The microphone must sample nearby sound to recognize that trigger. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that a device can mishear a similar-sounding phrase and activate accidentally. Look for the product’s indicator light or sound and use its physical microphone-off control when you do not want the device to respond. The FTC’s consumer guidance explains these indicators and controls.

2. The requested interaction is captured and transmitted

Once activated, the assistant records the interaction needed to answer. The FTC says voice assistants usually send those recordings to the manufacturer’s servers. The provider may convert speech to text, interpret the request, return an answer, and associate the interaction with your account, device, location or linked services. That path is not identical across products: some functions can be processed locally, while others require cloud processing.

3. Audio, transcripts and account data may be stored

Retention can involve more than a sound file. A service may keep an audio recording, a transcript, command history, timestamps, device identifiers or information from linked email, shopping, calendar and smart-home accounts. Human reviewers may be permitted to examine limited samples under a provider’s policies or quality programs. Whether review can be disabled, whether data is used to improve models, and how long each data type remains are setting- and vendor-specific questions.

4. Deletion is a provider process, not a guarantee that every copy disappears immediately

Most major platforms provide an activity page or voice-history control for reviewing and deleting interactions. The visible item may be removed while transcripts, backups, logs or derivative data follow a different schedule. The available sources do not establish a common industry period for those copies, so check the provider’s deletion explanation rather than assuming that deleting a recording erases all related data at once.

Stage What can happen Question to check
Activation Wake-word detection, button press or another trigger; a similar sound can cause a false activation. How does the device show that it is active, and is there a physical microphone switch?
Transmission The interaction is sent to the provider for speech recognition and response generation. Which functions work locally, and which require the cloud?
Storage Audio, transcripts, account activity and linked-service data may have separate retention rules. What is saved by default, for how long, and can human review be limited?
Deletion Activity tools can remove visible records, but other copies may have separate schedules. Does deletion cover audio, transcripts, backups and derived data?

Why one company’s settings cannot stand in for every assistant

Google’s published documentation is a useful example, not an industry-wide rule. Google says Assistant interaction data is stored on Google servers, while audio recordings are not retained on those servers by default unless a user opts to save audio. Its documentation also describes reviewing or deleting activity in My Activity and says that some Nest services process some data locally. Settings and product behavior can change, so read the documentation for the exact device and account you use. Google’s device and Assistant privacy explanation sets out those statements.

The practical privacy and cybersecurity risks

Accidental activation

A false wake can capture private conversations, television audio or a child’s voice and send it for processing. Check the activation indicator after unusual sounds, and place the device away from rooms where confidential discussions occur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retention and secondary use

Keeping recordings longer than necessary increases the impact of an account compromise, an insider disclosure or a future policy change. A retained sample can also reveal household routines, names, locations and health or financial concerns even when the original request seemed harmless.

Human access and linked permissions

Account administrators, contractors operating under a provider’s program or anyone who obtains your credentials may gain access allowed by the service. A voice assistant linked to shopping, email, door locks or calendars can turn a spoken command into a real-world action. Review every linked permission and use a PIN or disable voice purchasing when visitors or children could issue commands.

Network and device attacks

A compromised account, outdated device, exposed router or malicious application can let an attacker hear interactions, alter commands or use connected services. The FTC’s data-security guidance provides broader security principles; its voice-assistant advice specifically recommends securing the home router and account.

What the 2023 Amazon case does—and does not—show

In a May 31, 2023 announcement, the FTC and U.S. Department of Justice alleged that Amazon retained children’s Alexa voice recordings and geolocation data for years, failed to delete transcripts from all databases after parents requested deletion, and used retained recordings to improve speech recognition. The announcement proposed a $25 million civil penalty along with deletion, notification and data-use restrictions. It described a proposed order, not a universal finding about every voice assistant; a stipulated order has force of law only when approved and signed by the court. Check the current docket before treating those terms as the present legal status. Read the FTC/DOJ announcement.

FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Samuel Levine summarized the agency’s position: “COPPA does not allow companies to keep children’s data forever for any reason, and certainly not to train their algorithms.” That statement concerns the alleged conduct in that enforcement matter, not a measurement of breach frequency.

Children’s voices have special legal significance

Under the FTC’s COPPA guidance, an audio file containing a child’s voice is personal information. A narrow enforcement policy can allow collection solely to replace typed words when the audio is held only briefly for that purpose, the notice clearly explains collection, use and deletion, and the audio is not used for another purpose before destruction. That policy does not remove other COPPA obligations and does not cover a voice request for additional personal information, such as a child’s name. See the FTC’s COPPA frequently asked questions.

Why telehealth is a higher-stakes deployment

Ordinary household use and a smart speaker integrated with medical care should not be treated as the same threat model. In its December 2025 guidance on smart speakers for home health care, updated December 18, 2025, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes a patient voice recording being sent to the assistant platform for processing. NIST identifies risks such as interception of unencrypted communications, manipulation of data or commands, denial of service, operating-system or application disruption, and unauthorized access through the home network or weak physical controls.

NIST cybersecurity specialist Ron Pulivarti explained the goal: “Telehealth patients and their providers exchange confidential information over the network, and we want to show what can go wrong and what we can do to protect them.” For these integrations, NIST recommends encryption, access limited to authorized people and devices, and network segmentation that separates medical or biometric devices from other household networks. Read NIST’s smart-speaker guidance.

How to reduce exposure at home

  1. Use the microphone control. Confirm whether the device has a physical mute switch or button, and learn the light or sound that confirms it is off or actively listening.
  2. Read the provider’s privacy controls. Check whether human review can be limited, whether model-improvement use is optional, and which services process requests locally.
  3. Review and delete history. Open the provider’s activity dashboard, inspect old recordings and transcripts, delete items you no longer need, and enable automatic deletion if offered.
  4. Harden the account. Use a long, unique password and turn on multi-factor authentication whenever the provider supports it.
  5. Reduce permissions. Remove unused email, shopping, calendar and smart-home links. Set a purchase PIN or disable voice ordering if other people can reach the device.
  6. Secure the router and Wi-Fi. Install firmware updates, replace default administrator credentials, use modern Wi-Fi security and disable remote administration unless you need it. Router security protects the connection; it cannot control what a provider retains after receiving a recording.
  7. Limit sensitive placement. Keep assistants away from bedrooms, clinical conversations and work areas handling confidential information, and mute or unplug them during those discussions.

Questions to ask before choosing or enabling an assistant

Vendor comparisons are meaningful only when based on current documentation for the exact model and region. Check these items rather than assuming that two assistants handle speech alike:

  • What wake-word indicators and physical mute controls are provided?
  • Is audio saved by default, and are audio and transcripts retained for different periods?
  • Can human review or model-improvement use be limited?
  • Does one deletion action cover recordings, transcripts, backups and other retained copies?
  • Which commands run locally and which are sent to cloud servers?
  • Does the account support multi-factor authentication, purchase PINs and granular linked-service permissions?

The available documentation does not provide a current, comparable audit of every major assistant, nor does it establish a reliable rate of voice-data breaches. Treat each provider’s policy and settings as the controlling evidence for your device.
