The Crew Motorfest is listed at 58.5 GB for Nintendo Switch 2 on Nintendo’s US eShop listing checked October 13, 2026. You do not automatically need a memory card: download it to the console’s internal storage if enough free space remains. If internal space is insufficient, use a microSD Express card—an ordinary microSD card cannot store or load Switch 2 game software.
The game also requires an internet connection to play. Check the live eShop listing or your physical package before downloading, because updates, regional requirements and packaging details can change.
The key numbers and requirements
| Item | What applies to the Switch 2 version | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Listed game size | 58.5 GB on Nintendo’s US Nintendo eShop listing, checked October 13, 2026 | Nintendo eShop product page |
| Console storage | 256 GB total, with some capacity reserved for system use | Nintendo Switch 2 Data Management FAQ |
| External storage | microSD Express is required for Switch 2 game software; supported capacity is up to 2 TB | Nintendo compatibility guidance |
| Standard microSD cards | Not supported for saving or loading Switch 2 games; they can load previously captured screenshots and videos | Nintendo compatibility guidance |
| Online play | Ubisoft says an online connection is required to play | Ubisoft announcement |
| Switch 2 launch | October 8, 2026, in physical retail and Nintendo eShop editions | Ubisoft announcement |
The 58.5 GB figure is the current listed game size, not a guarantee that the final occupied space will never change. Future updates or downloadable content can alter the amount of storage you need. Nintendo specifically advises checking the game’s eShop details or the physical packaging for the current, game-specific requirement.

Do not confuse the listed download size with the amount of free space shown by the console. The eShop may need room to download, install and update the software, while other games, screenshots, videos and system data may already occupy the internal drive. The console’s own available-space figure is therefore more useful than the 256 GB headline specification.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Do you actually need an SD card?
No—not if your Switch 2 has enough free internal memory. Nintendo says there are currently no individual Switch 2 games that require additional storage merely to play. The console has 256 GB of built-in storage, but that headline capacity includes space reserved for the operating system and may already be reduced by other games, captures and updates.
Open the game’s current eShop page and then check the console’s available space. If the free-space figure is sufficient for the listed 58.5 GB download, you can install the digital edition internally without buying a card. If it is not, Nintendo’s options are to free existing space or expand storage with a microSD Express card. An Express card can hold downloaded software, updates and downloadable content.
There is no The Crew Motorfest-specific card size that Nintendo mandates. A card becomes useful because of your whole library, not because this title has a special requirement. Someone installing only a few games may prefer internal memory, while someone buying many digital releases may find an Express card more convenient. The price of a card varies by capacity, retailer and market, so compare current listings rather than treating any particular price as a fixed requirement.
Do not treat 58.5 GB as the amount of free space every owner must have forever. It is the figure Nintendo displayed for the US listing on the date checked. The eShop may show a different value later, and installed updates can change the total. Use the live listing and the free-space number on your own console as the deciding information.
Internal storage versus microSD Express
| Choice | When it makes sense | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 internal memory | You have enough free space and want to download without purchasing an accessory | 256 GB is the total capacity, not the amount available after system reservation and existing content |
| microSD Express | Internal space is short, or you want room for several downloaded games, updates and DLC | The card must be microSD Express and must be initialized with the required system update the first time it is used |
| Standard microSD | Useful only for loading screenshots and videos captured previously on a standard card | It cannot save or load Switch 2 game software |
Nintendo’s compatibility guidance supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. No particular card capacity is required by The Crew Motorfest’s listing. Choose based on your broader library and available budget rather than assuming this one game mandates a specific size.
Internal storage is the simplest option: there is no accessory to buy, no card to initialize and no risk of purchasing the wrong format. Its trade-off is finite space. If you routinely archive and redownload games, that may be acceptable. If you want several large downloads available at once, external expansion avoids repeatedly deleting software.
An Express card is not a second save-data drive or a way to bypass the console’s system storage. It is an expansion location for software. Nintendo supports cards up to 2 TB, but larger capacity does not alter the game’s online requirement or move saves away from system memory.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How to check space and install the digital edition
- Confirm the current requirement. On the Switch 2 HOME menu, open Nintendo eShop, find The Crew Motorfest for Switch 2 and read the storage information on the product page. Nintendo’s support guidance says to use the eShop listing for digital purchases and the package for physical purchases.
- Inspect free internal memory. From HOME, open System Settings, choose Data Management and review the available space. Remember that the console’s 256 GB specification includes reserved system storage.
- Account for existing content. Include installed games, updates, downloadable content, screenshots, videos and any pending system data in your decision. Deleting a capture can free a small amount; deleting or archiving a large game can free much more. Archive or remove only content you can reinstall or recover through Nintendo’s supported options.
- Decide whether to expand. If the available space covers the current listed download and you do not need to remove other content, install internally. If it does not, delete or archive content you can reinstall later, or obtain a microSD Express card.
- Verify the card type before inserting it. Look for the words microSD Express on the card and its packaging. A conventional microSD card—even one that worked in an original Nintendo Switch—cannot be used for Switch 2 game storage.
- Check capacity and condition. Nintendo supports Express cards up to 2 TB. Confirm that the card is genuine, has enough capacity for your broader library and is not being advertised merely as a fast standard microSD card.
- Insert and update the card. The first time an Express card is used with Switch 2, Nintendo requires an internet system update. Connect the console to the internet and complete that update when prompted. The card cannot be treated as ready for game downloads until the console finishes the required process.
- Choose the installation location. After the card is recognized, begin the eShop download and follow the console’s storage prompts. The card can store the game, its updates and DLC; save data is handled separately.
- Keep the console powered and connected. A 58.5 GB download can take time depending on your connection. Avoid removing the card or interrupting the first-use update. If the download pauses, resume it from the HOME menu after checking the connection and available space.
- Allow the download to finish and launch online. Ubisoft states that an internet connection is required to play. A completed download does not turn the game into an offline title, so plan to connect the console when starting or playing as required by the service.
If you are using a physical copy, insert the game card and read the package’s storage statement before assuming that internal memory or an Express card is unnecessary. Ubisoft confirmed physical retail and eShop editions, but its announcement does not establish that every physical package contains all game data or avoids a download.

What happens to save data?
Nintendo’s Switch 2 data-management guidance says save data remains in the console’s system memory. It cannot be saved or copied to the microSD Express card. The card expands the location for the downloaded game, updates and DLC; it is not a portable save-data backup.
This distinction matters when moving between internal storage and an Express card. Reinstalling or moving software does not mean your saves have been transferred to the card. Keep the console’s system storage available for save data and use Nintendo’s supported system-transfer or backup options if you need to protect progress.
Do not remove an Express card while software is running or while the console is writing data. If you later use a different Switch 2, follow Nintendo’s current transfer instructions rather than assuming that moving the card also moves your progress. The card contains the install location; the console remains the save-data location.
Why an ordinary microSD card will not work for the game
Switch 2 uses a different storage standard for game software. Nintendo’s official compatibility statement is unambiguous: “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” A standard card may still be useful for loading screenshots and videos that were previously captured on it, but it cannot be selected as the destination for The Crew Motorfest or its updates.
Do not infer compatibility from the card’s capacity, speed rating or the fact that it worked in another console. The relevant label is Express. If the card is not identified as microSD Express, it is not a valid replacement for internal storage for this game.
A common mistake is buying a high-capacity UHS-I card because its packaging says “fast” or “gaming.” Those labels do not make it Express. Check the exact product description and card marking before opening the package. If the console reports that the card is unsupported, stop troubleshooting download settings and verify the storage standard first.
Online, account and regional conditions
Ubisoft’s Switch 2 launch announcement says an online connection is required to play The Crew Motorfest. This is separate from the storage question: enough space lets you install the software, but it does not remove the online requirement.

Nintendo’s UK product listing additionally specifies a Ubisoft account and a persistent internet connection, and says that online multiplayer and features require an applicable platform subscription. Those are UK listing terms, not a universal statement for every country. Check the product page for your region for account and subscription conditions before purchase. The Ubisoft announcement establishes the general connection requirement, while regional Nintendo listings may add market-specific terms.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
Plan for the connection during initial setup, updates and play. A download completed while offline does not change Ubisoft’s requirement. If you are buying for a child or another account, verify which Nintendo account and Ubisoft account must be linked in your market, and read the local product page for any subscription language.
Physical copy versus eShop download
The game launched on Switch 2 on October 8, 2026, in both physical retail and Nintendo eShop editions. A physical game card can reduce the amount you download compared with buying the complete digital package, but the available evidence does not confirm that a particular physical edition contains every file needed to play. Some packages can require additional data or updates.
Read the storage note on the exact box and regional product page. Nintendo says packaging and eShop listings carry the game-specific requirement. Do not assume that “physical” means zero internal storage, and do not apply a requirement from another platform to the Switch 2 edition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPhysical ownership also does not remove the need for online access when the game itself requires a connection. Keep enough system or Express-card space for patches and downloadable content even if the initial game data is supplied on a cartridge.
Avoid the PC-size confusion
Ubisoft’s US store page includes a 40 GB storage requirement in its PC system requirements. That number is not the Switch 2 requirement. For Nintendo’s console, use the 58.5 GB figure from the Switch 2 eShop listing and recheck the listing for later changes.
Platform-specific requirements are not interchangeable: a PC figure can describe a different build, file structure and update process. The Switch 2 listing is the appropriate source for the Switch 2 download decision. Do not use a PC requirement to size an Express card or decide whether the console has enough free space.
Troubleshooting storage and setup problems
The eShop says there is not enough space
First compare the eShop’s current requirement with the free-space figure in System Settings > Data Management. Remove or archive software you can reinstall, delete unneeded captures, or install a microSD Express card. Nintendo’s storage guidance covers freeing space and expanding storage; it does not say that every owner must buy a card.
The console rejects my card
Check the label and packaging for “microSD Express.” A standard microSD card is not a substitute. If the card is Express, connect to the internet and complete the system update required on its first use. Do not interrupt that process or remove the card while the console is updating it.

The card is Express but the download still fails
Check that the card is seated correctly, the console completed its first-use update and the card has sufficient free capacity. Recheck the live eShop requirement rather than relying on the original 58.5 GB figure if the listing has changed. Keep the console connected and retry the download after resolving any system-update prompt.
I expected my existing Switch card to hold the game
Existing standard microSD cards can be used to load previously captured screenshots and videos, but Switch 2 game software must use internal memory or microSD Express. Move or redownload the game to one of those supported locations instead.
My saves are not on the Express card
That is expected behavior under Nintendo’s data-management rules. Save data stays in system memory; the card stores software, updates and DLC. Keep the console storage available and use Nintendo’s supported save-transfer or backup features for protection.

- Open the current regional eShop listing and note its Switch 2 storage figure.
- Check free system memory rather than relying on the console’s 256 GB headline capacity.
- Install internally if the free-space figure is sufficient and you prefer not to buy an accessory.
- If space is insufficient, expand with a microSD Express card, not a standard microSD card.
- Complete the required internet system update when the Express card is first used.
- Keep save data expectations clear: saves remain in system memory.
- Plan for an internet connection and verify any account or subscription terms that apply in your region.
- Recheck the listing or package if a later update, DLC release or regional change affects the storage requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How large is The Crew Motorfest on Nintendo Switch 2?
Nintendo’s US eShop listing showed 58.5 GB when checked October 13, 2026. Treat that as the current listed size, not a permanent guarantee; updates and DLC can change the occupied space.
Do I need a microSD Express card to play it?
Not necessarily. Nintendo says no individual Switch 2 game currently requires extra storage if the console has enough free internal space. Use an Express card only when internal capacity is insufficient or you want more room for other downloads.
Can I use my regular Switch microSD card?
No. Standard microSD cards cannot save or load Switch 2 game software. Switch 2 game storage requires microSD Express. A standard card can still load screenshots and videos previously captured on it.

What capacity microSD Express card should I buy?
Nintendo supports Express cards up to 2 TB, but The Crew Motorfest does not mandate a particular capacity. Choose according to your wider digital library and budget, after checking current retailer listings.
Where do the game’s saves go?
Nintendo says Switch 2 save data remains in system memory. The Express card stores downloaded software, updates and DLC, not save files.
Does the physical edition avoid downloads?
Not automatically. Ubisoft confirmed physical and eShop editions, but did not establish that every physical package contains all required data. Read the storage note on the exact box and regional listing.
Can I play after downloading without internet?
Ubisoft says an online connection is required to play. A finished download does not remove that requirement.
What online account or subscription is required?
Nintendo’s UK listing mentions a Ubisoft account, persistent internet connection and an applicable platform subscription for online multiplayer and features. Requirements can vary by region, so check your local Nintendo listing.
Why does Ubisoft mention 40 GB?
The 40 GB figure on Ubisoft’s US store page belongs to the PC system requirements. It should not be used for Switch 2. Use Nintendo’s Switch 2-specific listing instead.
What should I do if the console says there is not enough space?
Check the current eShop requirement and available space under System Settings > Data Management. Delete or archive content you can reinstall, or expand storage with a microSD Express card.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The Bottom Line
Use the current 58.5 GB Nintendo Switch 2 listing as the starting point, then compare it with your console’s actual free internal space. A microSD Express card is optional when that space is sufficient, but it is the only supported card type for Switch 2 game storage and supports capacities up to 2 TB. Standard microSD cards cannot hold the game, saves remain in system memory, and an internet connection is required to play.
